Title: Smokin Hot Rocket Stove
Post by: Jon Burrell - Tentworld on December 01, 2018, 12:19:47 PM
Hi Swaggers,

Long time no chat.  Sorry about that!  I hope you've been keeping well!

Today, our team member Luc from the Tentworld Midland store in Perth has made a very nice, comprehensive video of one of new Smokin Hot Rocket Stove.

For those of you who are not familiar with rocket stoves,  they're wood burning stoves designed to be extremely fuel efficient with a compact combustion chamber.

Rocket stoves also have a vertical chimney, which helps to ensure combustions totally complete before exiting the chimney.  By comparison to a camp fire, they can use up to 47% less wood, and result in a cleaner burn.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocket_stove (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocket_stove)

The Smokin Hot Rocket Stove is portable, collapsible rocket stove that is designed for cooking.

For unboxing, to see everything you get in the box.  Luc has also made an unboxing video.

I hope you enjoy!

If you've got any video requests, or suggestions please let us know!

Enjoy your weekend.

Cheers,

Jon

Looks like a great cooking stove.

Seeing I couldn't buy one of these I made something similar.  It runs well on the small sticks that gum trees drop, so finding wood id easy.  The biggest improvement I made was to insulate the combustion area.  I presume it would do the same for this stove.  The insulation increases combustion temperatures and burns more efficiently so there is no smoke.

Hint for starting, drop fire starter, paper or whatever you start your fire with down the "chimney".  This gets the air flowing in the the right direction faster.

I had an old noname kettle BBQ that I never used.  I cut a hole in the bottom and used the stove to heat the grill.  I'm sure the Smokin Hot Rocket Stove could be used the same way.

Hi Alan,

You're right, I have read that insulating the combustion chamber does help improve efficiency even more on all rocket stoves.

What did you use for the insulation ?

Would be great to see some pics of the one you built!

Sorry, I dont fully understand how you're using the kettle.  Any pics you might have on this I'd love to see!

Cheers,

Jon

Hi,
Vermiculite makes a good insulation, get it from a garden supply place.
Cheers

Thank you for the tip about Vermiculite! I hadnt heard of this one before, found it interesting reading!  I must admit though, I am puzzled how I could attach it to the chimney!

Hi,
Sorry, I thought it was the firebox mentioned. My son built a rocket stove using this as insulation around the fire chamber, and it worked well.
I imagine a double skinned insulated chimney would work but be too bulky for practical use.

Hi Jon.  Because I made an L shaped stove i put it in a metal box full of vermiculite to insulate it.  this wouldn't work as easily for the Smokin Hot Rocket Stove due to the ash door.  An alternative is to use ceramic fibre blanket.

I meant a Kettle BBQ (sorry) (think weber kettle BBQ).  I cut a hole in the bottom to fit the "chimney" of my stove then put a cast iron diffuser to spread the heat.

I also have a 450mm diameter dished plate that I use for frying.  The dish means that oil and fat dont spill everywhere or catch fire.

Just looked at the video again, as the firebox is bigger than the chimney you could probably use  insulating fire bricks inside the fire box as insulation.  Much neater. eg http://www.darleyfirebrick.com.au/bricks.html (http://www.darleyfirebrick.com.au/bricks.html)

Ahh yes I understand now!  Very nice!
