Basically devalues existing shareholders.

Eg 1000 shares and they give an extra 500 shares to govt. Now have 1500 shares for the same company.

Is there any reason why, instead of subsidising these big airlines, we buy shares to bale them out. My thinking is that way we at least we get some form of monotary return when they get back on their feet. I do realise there is a massive return to the economy through jobs but, we spent billions on baling out the cars industry for them to bugger off anyway.

they are already publicly listed companies VAH @ $ 0.086 per share
                                                             QAN @ $ 3.56  per share

OK I can understand that. Excuse me for sounding stupid but wouldn't it be better to have devalued shares than none at all if the company enters bankruptcy? I was reading an article today where Jacinta Ardern was saying they could have a two week quarantine for anyone entering NZ for possibly the next two to three years. If that is the case, and we follow their lead here, or indeed other countries do,  who would want to spend five weeks for a one week holiday? Sounds to me like the death knell to most airlines. Do you think it is wise to invest in them?
I'm just trying to get my head around it.

There's lots and lots but my opinion is that the days of cheap air travel are well and truly numbered. The financiers are probably "helping" the airlines out at the moment but you can bet that when all this is done and dusted they'll want the arrears sorted out ASAP.

Guess though we forget sometimes that planes don't just carry people, they also carry freight/goods etc.

Well get your head around this-
https://news.mb.com.ph/2020/04/13/chinas-new-coronavirus-cases-near-6-week-high-russian-border-new-battleground/

‘Suifenhe and Harbin, capital of Heilongjiang, are now mandating 28 days of quarantine for all arrivals from abroad as well as nucleic acid and antibody tests.’

“I don’t need to worry,” Zhao Wei, another Suifenhe resident, told Reuters. “If there’s a local transmission, I would, but there’s not a single one. They’re all from the border, but they’ve all been sent to quarantine.”

In Australia right now we have States and Territories shutting their borders (against the Federal Constitution mind you) let alone country towns and seaside resorts who don't even want holiday homeowners coming to live in their joints so whaddya reckon with whole countries never ever wanting to go through all this crap again?

I'm with Zhao Wei and you want to step onto this land again once we've bumped off this virus you can go straight to special user pays quarantine facilities for similar (28 days?) with all the medical tests they want to run and charge you for before you're ever allowed to roam around free on this continent again. Get the picture? Yep that means Formula1 drivers and crew, international golfers, tennis players, visiting dignitaries, new migrants and returning jetsetters, yada yada. So get all that into the frame as I want to be able to get back to normal hitching up and hitting the road with as much bloody toilet paper as the supermarket shelves can carry anywhere and everywhere. And do you think all those folks facing worse OS right now will be any different with you stepping onto their soil? Now do you get it?

Why at this time, would you even worry about the constitution.  In my opinion, you do what ever is needed to be done to fix the problem at hand when it’s a National / World health problem.

Look at New York now after Mayor Cuomo said that if the President considered quarantining New York, it would be considered a federal declaration of war.

Again, you do whatever is needed to be done

Obviously you do not have children, parents, friends or relatives living abroad.  So no specialist doctors, engineers, health experts or anyone would be able to come in.  Naturally all airlines would stop as well. Forget the freight boats as they are not fully robotic.   Things will change in the future but what your proposing is complete insanity. Naturally we will have to take this one step further as some people want and completely shut down our state borders with the same limitations you want.  Sitting in a refrigerated truck for 28 days at the border wouldn't be much fun.Every country on the planet to remain a totally shut off state/nation?  Welcome to North Korea.

Article link from Anne Twomey, Professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Sydney.
https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/6691963/states-are-shutting-their-borders-to-stop-coronavirus-is-that-actually-allowed/

"If movement of people across state borders must be absolutely free, can the states hinder or even prevent such movement during the coronavirus pandemic? The short answer is "yes".
"Absolutely free" does not mean what it says. The High Court has accepted that there can be limits if they are reasonable and imposed for a legitimate end, such as protecting the public from a dangerous disease."

Yep, right now there's about 3900 world-wide, with ~200 over Oz (& 1500 in the US!).

The usual figure though, is in the order of 50000! :o

& the 200 here include a number of freighters (UPS, FedEx & DHL), quite a few RFDS, & lot's of light aircraft, with only half a dozen or so commercial jets.

It's so bad, that GC Airport, usually the 6th busiest in the country, shut it's doors on Easter Thursday, leading into what is usually the busiest weekend of the entire year :'(

We took our kids out of school a couple of weeks before the end of term, so by now they've had their holiday.

I set them up with their OneNote and school email accounts this morning and sent them back to e-school today.
They've already completed the first week's worth of English classes...  :cup:

Yep weve been home schooling since before the holidays.. Miss 12 is a challenge to keep on track, but still doing ok.
Biggest challenge we're finding is some of the teachers, Not being capable or up to speed with delivering a digital classroom lesson,  It seems most just dont have lesson plans they normaly conduct lessons from and its caught them out .
Lucky in our case both of us are here. mum works from home part time anyway  and Ive been stood down till further notice.

Basically devalues existing shareholders.

Eg 1000 shares and they give an extra 500 shares to govt. Now have 1500 shares for the same company.

Etihad Airways (20.94%)
Singapore Airlines (20.09%)
Nanshan Group (19.98%)
HNA Group (19.82%)
Virgin Group (10.42%)
I think three of them are Chinese businesses.
