Can't open Wash up of GVM topic ... Page 2 ?
« on: January 20, 2017, 08:54:36 AM »
As title says, I can't open page 2 of the above post. That said, I was surprised there wasn't more discussion around the over weight issue rather than the training on the first page of posts.

Currently looking at getting a camper, it's something I'm constantly looking at and am amazed at the number of campers with limited 'realistic' payloads. I say this in the context of the following.
I was looking at the specs of a very well known and established brand yesterday. What I refer to as payload being the difference between Tare and ATM was 326kgs. 350kg payload doesn't seem that uncommon. Now my understanding is that the Tare is bare bones and dry. That said this said trailer had provision for 2 jerry cans , 2 gas bottles, an 80 ltr water tank and a fridge slide. So a rough calc, using an Engel 60 ltr fridge at 32 kgs I reckon wet plus an empty fridge you've used 170 of the available 326 payload. So this is a hard floor camper, that now has 156kg available.
So, let's load the front tool box, the fridge, all our camp gear under the bed, woops, run out of room, lets throw a box or two on top, plus the kids bikes.
Really.... Is anyone surprised at the result of operation.

That all said, I personally don't want to be towing a trailer around oz at its max Capacity anyway...but that's just me.

I was reading a popular magazine some time back that did a review of a camper and once you loaded the wets, the remaining capacity was ridiculously small. I don't remember exactly, but it was that bad, I wrote to the magazine and pointed out the issue and suggested maybe this was something they should have commented on. I didn't even get a response. What can you do🙄

Well ... Off my soap box ...feeling better ...off to the beach 😀

Same same ^^^  My 2c worth is
Just goes to show that maybe people are dragging wayyy too much crap when they go away ..
Not to mention most campers are usualy way way  over built with the size of the metals that are used for the work they would ever do.   A lot of 3 ton +  Trucks are built with smaller size materials .
They could be a 1/4 to half the weight lighter and still be more than strong enough to last a lifetime [ Big is better,  for sales perception comes into it again ] ..
Then throw into that, poor  chassis / body design and placement of axle locations etc for heavy ball weights [ Again looks driven /  over proper placement, for  increased marketing ] .
Thats why you battle with weights

Just like our cars run around or over GVM our trailers seem to as well......

How much under ATM do you want to be......not much point having a trailer ATM 2000kg but only loading up to 1200kg

I built my trailer, Tare 800kg and ATM 1400kg.

TARE included Drifta kitchen, 70L water tank full, 3 x AGM Batteries.

When in touring mode with five adult mountain bikes it weighed in at 1200kg - 1300kg on a weigh bridge.

Maybe you could chat to Aussie builder and design suspension around payload you need......

......to me it seems logical to tow to the design capacity of the trailer otherwise it's over-designed
