Security Cameras.

 Hi all, anybody got any recommendations on a security camera system that will cover an average corner suburban block? Thinking maybe 4 cameras . mainly to cover front and side gate areas and back yard. Have a drug dealer moved in down the road from my partner and the increased foot traffic has resulted in the odd knobhead in her yard and generally upsetting her. Any preference for wired or wireless systems , or any particular brand or system to go with ? Would appreciate any feedback. Thanks, Luke.

Speak with a couple of local security companies.. I got a mate in melb who has done this gear all his life.. can shoot u his name etc and see if he has any contacts out that way...

Needs wifi internet and then you can monitor it anywhere by phone app but a snack to set up 

So you really need a 4 camera setup? Well you don't want every bush shrub or tree waving in the breeze to activate 4 of them as you'll never have the time to view them all. Ipso facto you really want a decent pro setup that works with both movement plus infrared detection to just catch humanoids (assuming you haven't got warm blooded pets to make things even harder). That with decent night vision detection aint cheap (the villains tend to like night time) and like Bird says it's best to speak with the pros for advice and the real McCoy here.

If you put up a camera and see someone on it, how does that change anything?
You already know that someone has been in the yard.

By the time you see it, call the cops, get them there, the perp will be long gone.
Even if the cops see it and know who it is, they'll just tell them not to do it again.
No real crime as such, is being committed.

Getting rid of the drug dealer might be a better option.

Hikvision is ok gear. If night time is your concern, adding an Infrared floodlight will dramaticly increase the night time performance. I'm running a 6 camera system into a 2 x 3tb hard drive which gives me about 5 weeks of fulltime imagery storage before it overwrites, a 3TB 4 camera system might give you around a 1 to 2 weeks of continuous storage, or about a month if set on motion activated.

Has provision for 8 wired cameras with 4 IR cameras included.

We have the camera covering the driveway set for continuous recording, with the other 3 on sensor only & it does a pretty good job - the sensors pick up the neighbourhood cats walking through our yard in the middle of the night!

As Jeeps said though, they're really only a make you feel good thing.

Definitely go NVR over DVR, they are just so much easier and tidier to install.

It's a small town,everyone knows everyone . It's more about identifying who it is. Never said anything about getting police involved.

When we looked at cameras the dude said most offenders wear hoodies and caps and you typically won't get a positive ID from them, unless the offender is really stupid.

What about some large/bright LED flood lights for the front yard? This will deter people who like to lurk in the shadows. All you need to do is make your front yard less desirable to loiter in than your neighbours...

Have always had 4 or 5 cameras ( fake ones ), and a blue done on the front verandah all visible from the street.
I want a deterant, not footage of some unidentifiable scrote after the event.
Never had a break in in 35 years in the city, unlike my neighbors.

Better off with a dog. I have cameras & had my pushy stolen from the back of the house. Had good footage, gave it all to police. They ended up catching the little Shit, but he wouldn't reveal what he did with the bike. The cops wouldn't give me any info about the Shithead or what punishment he got.

I've now got roller doors on my carports with no access to the backyard. I've also got security lights which light up the suburb(much to the dismay of my neighbours)

Our driveway boarders the neighbours fence and I have multiple LED sensor flood lights on it. One day the neighbour commented about my driveway lights being on and shining into their property. I suggested it would prevent somebody walking up our drive and jumping the fence and getting into their property. Funny how the conversation topic quickly changed

Getting back to the original question, I'm really interested in peoples opinions on security camera setups. Has anybody got wireless cameras or hard wired cameras? Yes we are putting up some motion sensor lights . Thanks , Luke.

Don't know about other brand systems, but the one I have you can set up an app on your phone, then set up alert zones on the field of view (either a line, box, or specific area) for each camera. If the camera detects movement in the area you have specified you get a ping on your phone.

Need to have a static IP for this to work though ($10 per month from Telstra). If your asleep at home and your phone goes ding in the night, just look out the window. If your away from home and your phone goes ding, log in and have a looky looky then phone a "friend" if there is something that needs attending to

Wired, with wireless you still have to get power to the camera or charge/replace the battery. These days you use PoE (power over Ethernet) cameras that only require a network cable, rather than the old school power & video cable requirements.
