General Discussion / Re: Interesting read on electric cars
« Last post by Rowlie on Today at 07:40:14 PM »Insurers base their premiums and underwriting on statistical analysis. From the little I have observed the stats don't recognise any increased fire risk in the ev space when compared to diesel / petrol ICE. The cost of repairs and progression to economic total loss is probably the bigger issue for insurers ie a relatively small bump can compromise the batteries I understand and the astronomical cost to replace these makes them economic total losses much sooner than an ICE vehicle. The other issue effecting insurance underwriting I reckon is the basic tenet that insurance is based on the many sharing the losses of the few. At this point in time "the many" are too few to do meaningful analysis.
BTW - I am a firm believer that ultimately we will all be driving something other than ICE vehicles - as we currently know them. For the reason detailed above alone I think the road will be bumpier than the GRR. It is going to be a journey that is worthy of many tonnes of popcorn as we watch it unfold.
