Title: Aluminium Checkerplate suppliers in Melbourne northern suburbs
Post by: Darcy7 on August 28, 2009, 12:30:44 PM
Hi everyone

Can anyone suggest a good place to get aluminium checkerplate in the northern suburbs of Melbourne.  I know there's a Sims Metal depot in Broadmeadows but I don't know if they sell it there?  Prefer if the place was open on a Saturday but may be pushing that.

I've also heard some Bunnings stores sell it but they are few and far between.

Any help appreciated.

thanks

Darcy

Hi Darcy,

There used to be a Capral aluminium behind the Northland home maker centre in Preston.
I can't remember the name of the road, but you can enter from Murray Rd and drive around the rear to where it is.They will even cut to size for you.

cheers  matt

Hi Darcy

The main suppliers in Melbourne are Capral and Action Aluminium, Capral bought out Smart Aluminium, I think Smart Aluminium have a branch in Airport West and Action have a branch in Thomastown. I have found that Action are cheaper and better to deal with than Capral ( Smart) but it would pay to check with both, of course there will be a lot of smaller operators around as well.

Thanks for the info gents.

I found a caravan dealer in Broadmeadows who sell 8x4ft sheets for $95 which is about as good as I've found so far.  Also Bunnings sell smaller sheets but they are thinner metal and pretty expensive.

Lost

Yeah that's exactly what I'm doing.  I was giving it some thought and I think I'm going to have to get them made up as I don't have anything that can bend lenghts of checkerplate and I think I'm going to need some welding as well.

This mob in Broady said they could make them up for me.  Not sure what price but I'm thinking of taking the camper down there to get them to have a look.

Can't hurt to get a price

Don't buy from Bunnings unless you are rich. I got a small sheet last week and it cost an arm and a leg, but I needed it in a hurry.

Let me know what yours looks like around the battery, that and possibly the front storage section on other side... could be interested in doing mine.

still on back burner?
I have planned a battery cover for mine... Just to find someone to make it. Only 1 end of cover will be enclosed.
