Hire Electric brake controller

Hey all,

Does anyone know where I can hire a portable electric brake controller in Melbourne (preferably North/West).

I need to do a one off trip with a car that doesn’t have one installed.

I made a portable unit with a cheap second hand brake controller of FB Marketplace and about $50 of bits from Supercheap. We keep it in the tool box on the van if we ever need to tow it with a vehicle with no brake controller, just plug in to the 12v socket and between car and trailer plugs easy peasy

Is that a double trailer plug, Clevo - one into the back of you car & the other to the van

 I believe that a brake controller has to be mounted in a spot that is accessable to the driver. Might be splitting hairs but I can't see it being accessable if its rolling around in the boot or back of the car. Even though its only used every now and then.

I don’t believe that is the case in qld, my trailer came supplied with a controller on the the A frame. Can’t see any way of accessing it while driving, just needs to be set correctly at the start of the journey.

When we fitted brakes to our CT, the control box was also fitted on the draw bar. I asked the bloke & he said that the official view is that the brakes are controlled by the driver using the brake pedal, so the control box doesn't have to be in reach.

Plugs between car and trailer, set the brake controller to approx 50%, test, and pull up and adjust if need be. It is only a use every now and then device if we or friends use a car without a controller. better than no brakes on trailer at all.

He said that generally brake controllers or operational parts should be mounted in a position that can be manually operated from the drivers seat, but check for state rules and regulations. Also check the link to an artical from a magazine, rules and regulations, 3rd paragraph. I have no idea on how things were done 15 years ago, just from what I was led to believe at the time I installed my controllers. You can get newer Bluetooth controllers which might be different in mounting them but think they still have a controller in the car.

The current tow vehicles lease expires next year so I think I’m going to hire/trial the elecbrakes module.

If it works ok, I’ll look at a putting on on the camper permanently.

I assume you mean this paragraph, it must be the authors thoughts rather than regulation, otherwise all mechanical brake systems would be illegal, as you cannot operate them separately from the vehicle braking system. However all of these systems, (mechanical, hydraulic, electrical mounted in the front seating area and electrical mounted in other locations) can be operated from the drivers seating position using the brake pedal.

Section 2, last sentence.  I didn't write it, the author of the magazine artical didn't write it. Read it and interprate it how you like. It's posted for information.

I can see that Hayman Reece say that it’s legislation, however my point is in what state.

This is from Qld legislation and it only states that other than overrun mechanical brakes, you must be able to operate the system from the front drivers seat. Nothing about the mounting of the system

If you read it carefully,

except for over-run...operate from driver's seat.

That means over-run are not operated from the driver's seat.

If you are driving with over-run and you out your foot on the brake, the trailer catches up and the over-run works.
Remember of course over-run is not operated from driver's seat, therefore putting foot on brake doesn't count as "operating"

I see little point in going into semantics, qld code says operate, foot pedal is operating it.
Nothing is said about it being overriding it or mounting in the cab

Hire trailers have the brake brain box on the drawbar, so that would tell me, the driver can operate it from the front seat via the foot brake application.
