Fraser Island ANZAC Day
« on: April 19, 2018, 12:07:16 PM »
Heads up for those that may like an ANZAC Day with a difference than what they would normaly experience ..
The Dawn Service at Waddy Point is a great way to start the day,  from what Ive been told by friends https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ro6vV_-LqMY

Then if Tide and time permits the 10 Am Service at the Maheno
A military presence of 4 New Zealanders and 4 Australians. Will be in attendance at the MAHENO Wreck site for commemorations .
There are 3 Australians from RAAF and  1 from the Army,  the New Zealand  contingent are all RNZAF....

What the Maheno  used to look like
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRYs9AVh_Fg Just think going by the ships blue prints there is aprox a 25 foot deep section  of the lower part of the ships hull intact  buried in the sand beneath the current beach level . . Anchor hole level  to the keel .

A lot of familiar faces in that vid. I'll be there again this year. The little bloke in the Jackie Howe running the two up is a mate and a workmate. We will be spreading his wife's ashes at Waddy this Sunday, then going to the dawn service on Wednesday. He's been trying to get out of that two up tent for years but keeps getting dragged back in.
A different crew runs the Maheno memorial - it started a few years back for the anniversary of Gallipoli.

Really would like to go to the dawn service.

Will be at KFB from the 24th - 30th...  But just checked tide times...

I don't mind grinding through the bush about 3.30am in the dark - to pop out at Cornwalls at approx 4:30ish...

But the TT book says high tide is 4:16am @ 1.92m  .. so  hmmm?

Eurong is running a promo, $215 per night, 2 pax including barge transfer... but its x2 nights; 3rd night free...

I don't need the free barge transfer and the 2nd  3rd night at Eurong...

Maybe just park up, and sleep in the back of the ute, like what we used to do - pre the AT-11 van ..

You get out and in to the world -- you take more @#&$. …You climb a little higher, ..you take less @#&$.  …Till one day -- you're up in the rarefied atmosphere -- and you've forgotten what @#&$ even looks like….  Welcome to the layer cake son.

.7 low Tide at 9:40 PM on Tuesday night, Easy run across the island after teatime at KFB, cruise up the eastern  beach and find a spot  up at Waddy to park up .  :cup:
We're looking to be on Fraser for ANZAC day  next year [ Been too long since the last one ] .
