Minocycline ACNE medicine warning - Minomycin
« on: April 02, 2014, 07:15:35 PM »
Hi all

Its not often I am serious Daz but thought this was important enough to raise.

A lot of teenagers with very serious acne are prescribed Minomycin (Minocycline etc) which is a broad spectrum anti biotic.  The doctors that prescribe this are normally specialists and explain all the dangers.

Our son has been on it for about 18months as he was getting scarring due to Acne.  It really worked and he is clear and no more scars.  However we have had a hard time with him over the past six months with shocking mood swings.

We had become worried about him self harming so really kept an eye on him and tried to engage as much as possible.  He came off it last week and amazingly he is back to his old self.  Almost overnight.

They say it may take a few months to work out of the system.

So I suppose what I am saying is really listen to the doctors if your child is prescribed it.

cheers

Daz

So True!

My daughter is on it, has controlled the acne, hard to differentiate mood swings from medication & natural in a teenage girl.

I (tried to) work on the basis that she can tell me almost anything and I won't blow my lid immediately.

Didn't always work, but it wasn't a bad plan.
Meant that she could talk to me when she wasn't 100%.

We don't do it often enough, but dinner at the table, cards or board games after goes a long way to teaching them what was normal when we grew up.
Not head burried in an iDevice (he says with 2 computers, iPad & Phone next to him :-[)

Daz - good to hear you're son's on the other side of it.

Now the other worry starts - teenage boy - no acne....
