Can you reseat an axe head on a fibreglass handle?
« on: July 25, 2014, 02:40:42 PM »
My axe head has worked loose. It's a cyclone brand with yellow fibreglass handle.
Cheers in advance.

The tools now day are rubbish, I have had my axe for nearly 40 years and all I have had to do was replace the head once and the handle twice now that is what I call quality  >:D
There is no problem that cannot be solved by the use of high explosives.

The axe head is still good. I've cleaned out the old resin and separated it from the handle.
What concerns me is the old fibreglass matting that sort of loops through the top of the handle that gets set in the resin. I'm worried I'll damage the handle cleaning it out if that makes sense.

Is it worth the effort to try and salvage the handle or should I just fork out for a new one?

Can you get a new wooden handle for it instead? Probably more than a new axe.

Can you fix it with new Fibreglass and resin - but will it be safe enough?

Yeh that's what I'm worried about. I've got the resin and glass matting but just don't know if its gonna be safe.
I was hoping someone had already done it and could say either "don't bother" or "yeah go for it". Obviously they'd be free to choose their own words lol.

Too many long nights on the road delivering swag mail all over the country gets to you eventually  ;D

Accepting that I'll replace the handle anyway, I'll get the dremmel onto it tomorrow and see what happens. ;D

Where's the best place to buy axe handles? Do the mower shops sell them?

Went to replace the handle in my axe,   Mitre10s axe.  36 dollars   32 dollars for a handle  I went with the new handle as the axe head is a family hand down.

Buy Fiskar and you can't go wrong.

But if you replace the head once and handle twice, haven't you basically replaced it one and a half times? :)

Just an update.
I don't think the fibreglass handles are salvageable. The resin seems to go a fair way into the centre of the handle which is beyond the reach of the Dremel and also standard length drill bits. I got to the point of thinking about how safe it would be once fixed and with that decided to replace the handle with a hardwood one. Off to the BGS, they only have 800mm long ones so I bought a Fiskars X27. Bloody expensive I thought at $139 until I used it. :)

Paul
