The best Gorge in the southern Flinders SA
« on: April 01, 2012, 08:44:54 PM »
Hi
figure on bush camping in the bottom 1/2 of the Flinders just after Easter (avoid some of the mad rush),  we are well equipped and very much stand alone
which is the best gorge to visit (and camp at)?
which is the best gorge or campground to avoid and why (crowds? ) ?
is there any water about at the moment?
normally we "sail past" the bottom part on the way to somewhere else but it's time to spend some time "in our own backyard" as such
message me your special spot if you dont want the world to know about it.
cheers
Garry

Brachina Gorge would have to be up there and there are plenty of free camping spots around there.  Might be a bit far north to what you were thinking though.

  • If I agree with you, then we would both be wrong!

Garry,

As it will be Easter, most places will be busy but x2 for Brachina.

Chambers Gorge is pretty good and a bit off the beaten track.
There a few petroglyph's in the gorge.

Some great National Park spots in Aroona

Free camping in Warren Gorge

Heaps of free camping beside the river along Parachilna.

Cheers

The last post by Parry has some great photos - they show a number of lovely camp sites.  Thanks for this.

In reply to the OP, I would have to agree that Brachina Gorge is lovely, and Parachilna Gorge has some nice camp spots too.  If you have a SA Parks Pass, Brachina Gorge camping is free.

We have stayed at Warren Gorge a number of times and its great advantage is it is a large area with a variety of different camping sites (hillside or down near the creek - which is usually dry, alas).

Another vote for Chambers, although a bit more north, you are halfway of the Flinders.
We stayed there for 3 nights and we loved it.
Definately going back as there is so much to see. Only thing is: it is a long drive from Perth.
