After 8 years in Australia there are still times when I get stuck... can someone please give me the Australian name for Chutney Barrels:
This is a link to the sort of place in the UK that sells them; we're looking for a couple, one for the dog food in the shed, the other as a rubbish bin for the trailer.

Any one able to help?! I can get used cooking oil drums galore, likewise plastic buckets, but not chutney barrels...

Hi,
Check an outdoors shop, they get used for putting stuff in when whitewater rafting.
Cheers

That's what we know them from - I spent 10 years working on the water in various places, but over here in Aus we did more kayaking than open canoeing.... now off to the Facebook groups I'm in to ask there...

Id call it a screw top plastic barrel.
Cheers Glen

maybe something at a home brew shop?

They're quite a different shape to the Chutney barrels - the chutney barrels are about 380mm in diameter (the bumblings ones are 290mm) and the lid covers the whole diameter (or near as dammit) and are easier to use as storage drums.

They're getting closer - thank you.
These ones are plan B barrels:

Not quite as easy as the screw ones in some ways, but better in others.

Hi,
The 20L buckets are used for bulk catering supplies like margarine etc, and are often thrown away by bakers, patisseries etc, so it may pay to ask around.

We used to call them Pickle Barrels because they always smelled of vinegar. About 200 litres from memory.
Plenty on Gumtree.

Screw top plastic drum/barrel
Thousands of the 180/200L variety on Gumtree, just not the size you're after.
How about these mobs?

I'll be in Brissy again between Easter and ANZAC day, so if you order and pay over the phone, I can pick up and drop them off in Armidale on the way back south.

Thanks guys; I'll get there - it was one of those weekends where things were lining up for getting stuff moved around easily, so it was worth asking now.
@austastar We have more 25 litre buckets than we know what to do with as wife works in a bakery... The dog has 3 water buckets dotted around that are all those type of buckets, and we have a stack in the shed.
@KeithB I've managed the same, finding plenty of the big barrels; it's the 50ish litre ones that I'm struggling to find.
@Hoyks thanks for the offer - I might end up meeting you this time!
Sometimes it's a case of finding the big barrels and then looking for the smaller ones from there.
The 60 litre ones like these are plan B:

Bit big for the trailer, but great for the dog food in the shed.

Olive drums is what I would search for.

Also gherkins and Cocktail Onions are also imported from overseas in various sized containers.. cheers Ron.
-
Check out pet suppliers.
The dogfood I buy comes in that type container

I've seen something similar, empty 60l drums for sale out the front of the bulk butcher we used to go to, from memory they had stickers saying something about products they used for their small-goods manufacturing.
On a similar note. my old man, many years ago thought it would be good to have a plastic 44 gallon drum with a screw top lid for mixing and storing his birdseed. He bought a second hand drum which we cleaned a gazzilion times and left it open to air in the backyard. The sticker said it had held "pickled cow bungs", even after 5 years in the weather in the back yard airing out it still had that cow bung smell, never did use it.

Hey ED, you could try a company called Tilkey, they are located in Warwick and Coopers plains.

Sorry - Got the barrels that Hoyks posted up, and they're perfect for most of a bag of dog food!
Nice size and a good seal on them.
Will use one for wet swimmers etc when we go to the river.

No, Ed, you can't put the wet dog in the barrel then screw the lid down - people get upset about that (not to mention the dog)! ;D
