New world opening up ! Virgin campers !
« on: October 08, 2014, 06:45:49 PM »
Hi all We are just embarking on our true exploration of oz having been transported here from the uk 3 years ago. We have just bought a blue water darling trailer and we have an izuzu mux. We have so much to learn but the first of many questions I have is regarding electric brakes and connections . The car dealer has proposed a prodigy to be fitted to the car - is it a good make and if so what would a decent purchase and fitting cost do you reckon ?
Cheers Gary

Hi Gary,
Tekonsha Prodigy are one of the better known brands of brake controller and a popular choice among many people. I can't help with pricing sorry to say though.

It is a good and well known brand of brake controller as Rumpig has said. The unit costs around $200-220 retail but can be sourced a lot cheaper online. Depending on the vehicle I guess you would be looking at $250-300 for fitting the controller to the vehicle.

Also have a look at the redarc towpro. Remote head proportional controller.  The unit tucks away behind the dash with an adjustable button in the dash.  Do a search on here and you will find some threads. I also have a tekonsha Primus IQ and works well. But position means knocking knee on it sometimes getting in the car.

Thanks for the help on this . Have decided on the redarc tow pro. Was swing by the main box being mounted behind the dash with the controller only being visible. Also got the anderson plug wired in too. Picking up the car and camper trailer this week !
Cheers gary

Garyw2 - guessing the car may be new as you say picking both up this week??
Just a quick comment/reminder if this is the case that - we were told by the Toyota dealer that we 'shouldn't tow for the first 800-1000k's' to let the engine bed in.
The dealer also said they have seen people bringing in their car/van, trading the car and driving out with their new 200 series after dropping the van straight on...   So does happen but they weren't too impressed...

Good combination of vehicle and camper...

Good on you Garyw2. You will enjoy the trip. Just take your time and don't rush it.
