Help which pop top !
« on: April 14, 2011, 08:20:45 PM »
Need some help from the MY SWAG brains trust the wife and I want to up grade from our soft floor Customline camper to a good off road pop top.

I wouldn't mind a Conqueror off road camper but I think the bride would faint if I told her the price ha ha. Ive been looking and reading on the net and to be honest ill be staying away from Jayco read alot of bad reviews on the build quality (please Jayco owners I don't want to up set you guys but I've read some bad stories from owners and quite a few) so I'm hoping you guys can point me in the right direction on what is a good quality buy for our family wife myself and two billy lids some thing that will last us for years to see this big country.

Thanks for any help

Yes if i had my time again ( and a few extra dollars) i would have gone down the Goldstream path. They are certainly finished off a lot better.
You get what you pay for i suppose  ;D

If the dollars were no object a goldstream would be in the driveway. The corimal family van seems to offer reasonable value. My father is on his second corimal now and both have been well built.

I was being flippant when I said Goldstream. Whilst I am very happy with my Goldstream, when it comes time to upgrade I don’t think it will sell as quickly or hold its value as well as a Jayco. Jaycos are built to a price and do a good job for what they are. I wouldn't discount them in your search because you read a few bad reports on the net.

That's great for you but no matter what you buy there is always a lemon lurking about

Modcon Quattro which is a front fold hard floor with a fixed queen size and 2 x single beds.
Alternatively if you are handy you could get an older Jayco/Goldstream/Corimal and do an extensive refit like internal furniture upgrade and winch/hoist overhaul.
We looked at getting a Jayco Eagle outback but cant come at 25-30k when our soft floor has more room for a third of the coin.
Was tempted though ;D
I got a sweater for Xmas, really wanted a moaner or screamer.

Thankyou for your help the Sydney camping show is coming up and I have a list of brands to look at now.
we love our soft floor camper but the down side to it is the type of holidaying we do we do a lot of traveling and setting it up every night and packing it up each morning is a lot of work so we need to look at another option.

Recently we watched a family of 4 take 2 hours to pack up a Jayco.
Not sure whether this is representative though.

We take from handbrake to beer at the longest 45min and that is taking it easy this includes
Leveling
Bag flies
Awnings
Connecting power water
Making the bed
Transferring food from fridge to frridge if needed
Setting up table chairs outside
Moving cloths from car to camper if needed
Setting up outside matting

And that's 2 of us in a jayco swan

G'day macca we like most campers have been through most forms of camping, everything from tents,an old external scissor arm poptop, jayco swan and a couple of vans last one being a dual axle 18ft job.
we now have gone back to a 12ft soft floor and after trips with both jayco and soft floor i would take the soft floor over jayco for setup  any day.
Not knowing what size or style of soft floor you had as there are many different configurations, some harder to put up than others.
We went back to the camper just so as we have something to take no matter where we are going.
Like everything to do with camping it's all about compromise.
You will probably find that either way you go it will take between 15 to 30mins for an overnight setup so as long as you are using what ever you buy and travelling it doesn't really matter.
So for what it was worth that's my opinion, happy camping.
