Solvol Soap Bar
« on: January 09, 2022, 09:53:07 AM »
Hi gang,

Much to my disappointment, Solvol has discontinued its soap bars (https://solvol.com.au/products/).

I use liquid hand cleaners for heavy soiled hands but like to use a Solvol bar - I find it very handy of I need to ’spot clean’ grease while in the shower (ie if I don’t realise I’ve lent on something and get a splodge of grease on my are or leg).

Has anyone found a similar product to Solvol soap bars? (ie grit/pumice soap bar for grease)

Thanks in advance

This is going to sound weird, but it works, try a bit of margarine, rub it on your hands thoroughly and the grease will tend to congeal a bit, then wash with hot soapy water..

Nail brush rubbed on a bar of soap is effective. Pia about Solvol though, last remaining after 'Sandsoap' bit the dust decades ago.

Laundry powder used to be good for removing heavy grease off your hands. The best ones were the ones that stung when you used it... Probably why I get dermatitis on my hands sometimes these days..

Just Google sand or grit soap. Still available in a different guise.
Still my go to after working on mechanical stuff.

Laundry liquid is definitely good for removing locust fat off windscreens. I was heading back to Adelaide after a two week field trip driving through the SA mallee country in the middle of a plague and into the setting sun, we could see absolutely nothing. Then we remembered that we had laundry liquid in the trailer, straight liquid, a scrape with cardboard and a bucket of water and we could see again.

Thanks Glen. I tried Googling but obviously wasn’t using the correct search words… ‘grit soap’ comes up with a couple of alternatives. I haven’t used or heard of the brands - which do you use? (GritMitts is Australian made and sounds promising).

Thank you for everyone else’s replies too but I’m specifically looking for a soap bar.

My mrs used to alternate between OMO and FAB.. but for some strange reason, whenever I was home, the FAB used to be on the front windowsill?

Unfortunately, I’ve been to a few Bunnings down here (SA) and they’ve been out of stock for several months and are unable to source more.

Grit Mitts sounds promising and is stocked by Repco (but apparently not all stores carry floor stock - like my local one). As it’s only $3 a bar I ordered one to try.

Hello all! I'm from the manufacturer of GritMitts.

Can confirm that Solvol is no longer.

@geopaj thanks very much for giving GritMitts a shot! I hope you like it 😁

Yeah, probably need the brand name to be of much use.. LOL

This stuff works well too, probably wouldn't need it, but you could chuck in a couple of handfuls of sand or grit.

The best hand cleaner I've ever used:

https://reinol.com.au/

Soft on the hands (whilst you do the dishes, Madge)

Coming from a dirty manufacturing environment, full of oils, grease and machining of SG iron components (like cast iron only worse for carbon), I've never seen a product as good as it. Not sure what it does to sink drains long term, though the shop with 30+ employees never had an issue with sink drains in the 5 years we switched to this product.

Yeah it's not a soap bar, but I'm not the first to take it OT.
