So your putting lockers in the 4b Bert  ;D , we could be tempted to do it again, but there's a chance I'll be winch bitch for my mate Mick in his V8 cruiser ute................it's a great day out, 30km in 3 hours.  :cup:

you were the only one who had trouble with the clutch Mr McGirr.

I had a rear locker last time JK, no-one makes a front locker for a bt50 yet.

And this time my winch will work.

Looks like the track has been closed for vehicles on a permanent basis or in process

Well I have confirmation now that SWMBO is not coming along with me this year so I won't worry about the CT and just swag it.

Which also means I'm keen to give the CREB another go.  I don't think I'd ever do it again with a camper on!

Mark have you or anyone up north heard if the creb is open yet or is this track not an option anymore.

It's due to open on the queens birthday long weekend But we have had some recent rain.

I will keep you updated.

You must be keen doing it with a camper due to the slippery hills that are very steep.

Symon and J.K did it last trip with campers and they will be the best ones to give advice.

If you get a small amount of rain whilst doing the CREB then your going to spend the next 6 to 8 hours winching out, we towed our camper through last year with Symon and Yogi but it cost me an engine mount on one very steep hill  :'( .
Without the camper it would be a bit easier on the 4x4, some of the clay/red hills are about 300m long................that's a long way to winch if it goes pear shaped.  Having said that.....it's one of Australia's iconic tracks and I'd do it again in a flash   :cup:
We did about 30km in the first 3 hours so your low range level gets a good workout  ;D

It isn't too difficult, but there are some very steep sections that had me worried a few times.  With the late wet season this year I would advise against doing it with a camper on, if we had about another 5mm of rain when we did it last year I don't think we could have got through.

You can have a look at the video I did for last years trip here - myswag.org/forum/index.php?topic=14865.0 (http://myswag.org/forum/index.php?topic=14865.0) if you have a look at the very last hill you'll have an idea of how steep it is.

It might be worth mentioning that all three of us that did the CREB last year had front and rear lockers and mud tyres........not saying that their a MUST bit it sure helped in a few spots with 1.5t of camper on the back.

I think towing a camper on anything that resembles a decent 4x4 track at least requires 1 locker and good tyres...
Not about to start an arguement on whether u should have front verses rear locker or mudddies or decent all terrains...
But yeah...sounds like the shiz... :cup:

Good point jk, I used the rear locker a lot on that track.  The last hill I did with both lockers in, in 1st low, two feet on the brakes and my balls up somewhere close to my throat....

Something to think about is if you do some damage to your vehicle or camper you could be in trouble following the trip.

I would suggest trying it on the way back.

But each to their own.

With the 80 having 4 inches of lift and super flex arms we were picking up wheels here and there plus with out the lockers it would have been fun ;D Any kind of rain and you will be spending a day or two on the Creb 8)

We drove the CREB track last year about two hours after the MYSWAG crew went through. Fantastic drive, one of my favorite tracks in Aus. so far. We copped a heavy shower about a third of the way in which had me abit worried and made a few down hills "interesting" but thankfully when we reached the steepest parts the rain had cleared/hadnt  made it to these parts.
One particular climb just seems to get steeper and steeper the further you go but we done it easily with no damage to anything. We towed our Tambo Cooper trailer, we had Wrangler MTR tyres, 3" lift and a front diff lock which we didnt use(but finger hoovered over button ready).
If you have the chance to do it, DO IT. And to tell the truth, we didnt find the trailer a hinderance at all. All this would change in the wet though.

I done the CREB on a big fully loaded motorbike. I found little red the only one worth stressing about. I got airborne a few times as I had entered a rut and couldn't slow down. I sure put on a show for the 4wd guys at the bottom.
I found it pretty straight forward with 1wd and single disc brakes.
I got into a few conversations with drivers asking how I expected to get a bike through being it was a big loaded bike but I didn't find it too hard.
The bulldust after the waterfalls was a pita.

Sent from my brain using my fingers.

Hello everyone, I just got off the phone (9.20am 18/06/2012) to the Cairns Regional Council, Mossman branch and the CREB track is still closed. At present they were saying closed until early July but will depend on rain, later opening if more rain comes our way.

Cheers duggie.

we did it also with our camper but we went North to South. It had just opened the day we got there as well and like the others say it is a bit of work towing. we also have a locker up front and a decent LSD in the back. I would not have made it with out the locker I don't think on one or two hills only.

What annoys me is this sort of posting, on another forum.
http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/trips-touring-treks-23/cape-york-report-2012-pic-heavy-83267/ (http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/trips-touring-treks-23/cape-york-report-2012-pic-heavy-83267/)
I know he said the gate was open but open by whom.

The Cairns council have said on several occasions that they would like to close the track permanent basis, as to the running upkeep. The last thing we need is to give them a good reason to do so.
