Hey all,

So yep, another insurance question but I wont just ask a question that has been asked a billion times "Where do you insure your camper"? I can search for that.

What I am looking for, is if you hire out your camper when your not using it and if so, who do you insure it with to cover that? I have heard you can get regular insurance and pay extra for the few days or weeks you hire/rent it out?

Appreciate any advice, info etc.

From my business experience I suspect you're asking a very hard question like casual Airbnb and Uber suppliers. In that regard check out the extra insurance charge for car rentals. The temptation in the case of casual camper rental would be a nudge, nudge, wink, wink deal with the hirer that they pay a bond amount which is forfeited in the event of a damage claim and the owner was just lending it to a 'friend' at the time. You can see the risk of fraud should the insurer discover any advertising for such friendly rental. The upshot is you're either in business seriously with all the attendant costs and liabilities or you aint.

I might add in the case of the hefty car rental insurance premiums and their excess options, the premium you pay likely also covers a public liability component ie the car hire company pays an annual overall premium plus a percentage or fixed amount on each hire transaction because it's a risky business on two fronts as our world is filled with hungry ambulance chasers nowadays.

I have read that CIL does that.
You ring them and tell them your CT is rented out and you pay extra for those days.
When the rental period is over, you ring them again and the extra payments stops.

personally I don't think I'd loan my trailer to anyone... too easy to end up in tears.

It isn't a loan, it is renting it out.
You are getting paid for it.

I've been tempted to buy a cheap camper as a rental for abit extra cash on the side. Not sure if it would be worthwhile though.

Set the camper up on a block of land then rent it out to the "less camper types."
That way less damage, less wear, can't really wreck it setting it up wrong etc.
Could be a goer?

Then buy a new one after making the $$$ then you have two

When we were running our camper trailer hire business, we had 3 campers, we used Cil insurance.

We hired the trailers for 3 years. Made 2 claims, one camper written off. You get some great hirers and some bad hirers.

We had a very detailed hiring "terms and conditions" that covered everything. We made a good side income. All campers traveled to the Cape at least 13 times a year each. Best hire was a couple that traveled from Cairns to Port Headland WA and then wanted to send the camper back by truck. It took 6 weeks to come back to us at a charge of $50 per day. Total cost to them including the hire was $6800. They tried to argue with me but referred them to the clause in the hire agreement they signed about payment continues until the camper is back at our place.

The excess for the hirer was $1000 which they left as a bond. Our excess was only $200.

They were the Trackabout soft floor campers. The Safari models.

Thanks for all the replies. Some handy info there.

The reason we are considering it is that due to work commitments (Shift work, Holidays etc, Paramedic), we cant get away as often of on the usual days of normal people. My wife also is not a good camper. So, we want to buy a decent one but don't want to have that much value just sitting, collecting dust.

If we can get it rented out a bit, the CT will help pay for it self. Especially if we wont need it peak periods.

Really appreciate the info. Especially Mark (McGirr). First hand knowledge. Greatly appreciated.

Their commission is "only" 15%.

15% is the same commission that hotels etc pay for bookings through Wotif, Booking.com, and expedia, so I'd say that's the industry norm in terms of commissions.

That's why Hire Companies have to fully service a Trailer when it is returned.
Even if it's only done a few hundred miles.
