10 Essential "CAMPING" Items
« on: November 15, 2013, 07:39:43 PM »
Ok, I'm counting down the days til i pick up my trailer & starting to get a little bit excited/anxious about the first trip. ( not that i've actually planned 1st trip,  bad time of year)
What i would like is members opinion on the best/essential 10 items for camping.
Now i'm really looking specifically items that are camping related, i mean we'd all like A/c or TV (maybe not) but what are the swaggers essential items list.
And yes i know CT is top of the list. I'm probably more interested in those little things that you dont realize would be good to have until you dont have them.
Now i might qualify this a bit by saying to work on the presumption of a 4-6 week trip with some remote locations, and i'm happy if you include items for the tug eg compressor
If you feel the need to go over  (or under) 10 thats OK with me

( Mods, sorry if this thread is in the wrong place feel free to move it)
I look forward to the suggestions

Some things to make sure you have especially on long trip (there are some similar posts I think someone might link them in here I cant recall their titles.) WATER. A torch even perhaps a wind up one yes they are not as bright but give you light without batteries. Toilet paper. In our camper all the time I have a bag that has a jacket beanie spare pair of socks for both of us, that might not be as urgent in Qld but if for whatever reason it was cold and you hadn't packed one or socks get wet etc.  This bag also has our towels for us and kitchen in it and new set can get put in when we get home.  There will be others and ones that are more important that others will name.  Depends on where your trip is and how many going recovery gear and uhf/means of communication might be more important.  Water is a really big one though

Only 1 suggestion but lots of items on it.

I keep a spreadsheet and have for years called a Camping Checklist
with the following columns in it:
1. Item
2. Required
3. Quantity

It also has sections on it called:
To Buy
To Take
Shopping List
To Do

So I fill it out, check it off and then add stuff to add to the camping kit for the next trip when we are away. When I come home, I pull up the original list, update the checklist items and fill in any To Do or to Buy items.

After a few short trips, it will all come together. It was awesome when I had a tent and stored stuff all over the place as it was so easy to forget something. I would load the car and consult the list and almost everytime pick up something I had left behind before I left home! I still use it when we go in our pop top but it is much easier as the majority of stuff is already in the van ready to go.

Here is the list of items I have on the list now (modify to suit):

Camping Gear
Stove & Gas hose
Stove Stand
Gas Bottle
Light Pole
Gas Light
Cobb Cooker
Heat Beads
Porta Pottie
Toilet Chemicals
Toilet tent

For remote trips we always have a small "grab bag" which is a soft insulated lunchbox that has:
SatPhone with NextG SIM, simple mobile phone with a charged battery kept separate to the phone (no SIM but can use the same one as the SatPhone, compass, flint, lighter, marker pen, pencil, notepad, dynamo torch, band aids, pocketknife, chargers for phones (12v & 240v), 600mL water bottle, signal mirror and a disposable poncho. Always reachable in the vehicle and easily fits into a pack for walks. Add any essential medicines if you need to.

Hoping to never use it in anger but as I've done most of the really remote trips with just my middle son since he was eight, it's comforting to know it's there. I've reached for the bag a couple of times just to make sure it's there when things got a bit hairy. My son knows how to use everything and we run through the SatPhone startup at the start of each trip.

A good first aid kit is also easily accessible.

1. Independent water supplies
2. Steel bucket for heating water on/over fire
3. folding table & chairs. Use decent chairs that have a foot tube that will slide over the dirt/sand rather than dig in when you move your chair in and out from the table.
4. Decent esky, use one for food and one for drinks, make drinks one smaller. Or a fridge and dual batteries and solar
5. 3x5m silver tarp plus ropes and sand pegs
6. 2 x $15 gas stoves and lots of spare cannisters
7. BBQ plate/grille
8. decent tool kit
9. something for music
10. a book or two
I got a sweater for Xmas, really wanted a moaner or screamer.

The best way is to go for a weekend away and work out what you need.

The essentials will always be food, cooking gear and kitchen gear, beer and fridge.

Then comes the list of non essential gear that you have room in the camper for just to fill the empty spaces  ;D
