101 Uses for: Occy Straps.
« on: November 01, 2013, 08:28:59 AM »
Another forum I'm on has a few of these 101 uses topics, thought I'd start this one up!

Number 1.  Attaching tent to offset pegs on concrete or other hard surfaces.

Had some friends visit for a few days and put them up in the CT. having had the thing set up for another group of friends a month or so ago, decided to move the set up location a metre or so to give the grass a chance to recover.  You guessed it, misjudged the distance to the pathway  >:(

Managed to get one corner peg down thru the crack between 2 blocks, but the other corner was stranded.

Thought about roping the tent to the peg, but then thought, hey, heavy duty occy strap in back of
Tug that usually holds the fridge in place!

Put it in place, 4 days later, hasn't moved an inch. Think I mite get a few more to use on a regular basis as I often find I have to re peg the corners down to compensate for floor surface  movements.

Any other uses out there?

In my biker days you would not leave home without at least a dozen of them, great for tying down the tent & associated camping gear to the gearsack rack.
Hint, they don't hold slabs of beer down well as attested to going to Mungo Brush camp site along the then dirt road. Just had to sit down by the side of the road & drink the couple that hit the road & busted. Didn't want to waste them.

I'm sure that Jeepers will have a multitude of uses for them, most of which probably shouldn't be mentioned here.

I will go against the grain here and dont like them at all, I think they are dangerous and they have cost me a side window in my old ute canopy. I am sure they have there place here and there but i dont really like them, i have a heap of nylon straps and the likes for tying things down.

Went up bush without a belt. Used an occy as a belt to hold my trousers up. Worked really well.

Yep, they can be.  Which is why mine are the ones that have plastic tubing over them to prevent recoil, and have a warning label on them  8)

For overnighters we don't set up the awning on the camel but we leave it permanently zipped on.
3 occys - 2 threaded through awning corners so that both hooks are on the corner ground peg of the tent and one hooked through the eyelet at the apex point of the awning and hooked to a tent ground peg straight beneath it and it won't flap over in the breeze

Also good for using the end window awning as a shaded breeze way: one hooked to each of the two bottom corner eyelets (where poles would normally go) other ends hooked into pegs to hold it out at a low angle.

Cheers!

Brilliant for heaps of stuff.
Rough-tying shade cloth to tarp/ropes/pegs for some protection at the side.   Super quick clothesline.  Heaps of other stuff.
Just get the ones from supercheap with the large plastic ends - much less chance of smashing something or losing an eye.  Obviously still need to take care.

a good alternative is a pair of ladies stocking, although best to make sure they're empty before tying knots in them:-)

Good for a S & M Night at the local P & C  >:D >:D >:D >:D >:D
All men dream but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes to make it possible.

I keep two in the camper for when I set up without the annex. The annex remains folded back over the roof of the tent and I use occy straps to tie down so the wind doesn't blow it around overnight.

If I'm using the roof rack, anything up there is tied down with occy straps.

And that's why stockings as tie downs are the safe option. Much easier on the eyes!

Somehow The Bride can manage to get them in a knot even when wearing them. Not sure who causes it though?
