Had a 4.5 petrol manual RV.  Loved it.  Heaps of power.  Fuel not bad for size around 16 on highway 18 round town.

If I was to go again I would get the V8 auto on sequential gas.  Only vehicle I could fit 3 child seats across the back.
My alternative to cheap import trailers;

To start with, it a Cruiser, no a Landy. That would be a Landrover and we dont want to get the two of these mixed up. 8)
We have a FZJ105 manual and love it. Before this we had a HZJ105 which had been everywhere with ease.

Why is that? A auto(especially a Toyota auto is bullet proof and a pleasure to drive) off road is a mean thing to deal with.
For me I just prefer manuals but if I had come across the right vehicle with an auto, it would be in my garage right now.

An auto is definitely  a nicer thing both on and off road, the only 2 trade offs is engine braking and you can work around that anyway and you can't do a proper stall recovery (how many can do one anyway), but you are less likely to stall anyway. Mine is manual but that is how it came, my previous 4wd is auto.

My 105 auto is great when doing slow crawl stuff as you dont have to worry about clutch and gears. If you want to go slow use little amount of go pedal.

Auto is great, especially sand driving - no comparison.
