Title: Favourite Youtubers
Post by: Jon Burrell - Tentworld on August 25, 2020, 03:10:46 PM
Hi Swaggers,

Lately, I'm feeling bored with my current Youtube subscription list.

Who are you watching on Youtube lately? I'd appreciate some suggestions.  Doesnt have to be related to camping etc - but I'd love to hear who you enjoy watching on that front too!

Cheers!

I liked Michael from Seek Adventure before he hung up his boots, was glad to see you helped him out with a video too!

Yeah Michael is great. Hopefully he might start up again, but I did talk to him about a month or so ago and he was not too interested at the time sadly :(  He's enjoying his camping a lot more with no cameras around.

That video he did with us was awesome!

I'm enjoying Trip In A Van. A young family living the dream and travelling full time.
Very likeable personalities, they visit some magic spots around Oz. Great photography and videos too!

I think he should go down the Mark Rober (another YouTuber if you haven't heard of him) route and just aim for 1 video a month (if that), that way I think he'd likely find enjoyment in it again as opposed to it becoming a chore.

Another one you might like (with a young fam) is Trip in a Van, guessing you have already seen it though. The Way Overland was also another favorite before they got thrown in jail in Iran and then were part of a prisoner swap between the Australian and Iranian governments  :o

edit, just saw brickiematt recomended Trip in a van as well.

I have grown to like a bloke from WA called 'Wild Touring' - his wife, his young daughter and he have just set out on a lap of Aus. Still raw enough to feel real and achievable, so very relatable.

A lot of my subscription list has already been mentioned but to add a few:

- Big Oz Explorers - Similar to Trip in a Van but not as 'sponsored' as some of their videos are becoming
- Dangar Marine - For anyone into boating
- John Malecki - Ex American NFL player doing awesome woodworking
- Luke Towan - Miniature modeling. I have zero interest in taking this up as a hobby but his creations are unreal
- Colin Furze - Absolutely worth a watch if you have never seen one of his builds

Another for Bad Obsession Motorsport and 'Project Binky'.

I'm also a fan of Acorn to Arabella, a couple of guys that are building a wooden ketch on a shoe string budget and making the lot themselves, from back yard casting the lead keel, dropping the trees and sawing the timber and even making the bronze rivets.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAiDWnTP0WB1xCp6uuUo0VA (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAiDWnTP0WB1xCp6uuUo0VA)

Marty T is a kiwi bloke that buys old farm equipment and gets it going again https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCp-mnssZd4X2bgIcekaNfgA (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCp-mnssZd4X2bgIcekaNfgA)

Millennial Farmer I like too, showing the daily goings on and challenges of running a grain operation in the US. He's got a sense of humor with it.https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCp0rRUsMDlJ1meYAQ6_37Dw (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCp0rRUsMDlJ1meYAQ6_37Dw)

They had a big storm go through Iowa last week (didn't make the news here), but some of the destruction is worth a look. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAkr3ion2zI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAkr3ion2zI)

And Dangar Marine. Aussie bloke with a how to fix your boat on a budget channel. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBsXuIe0nBO3Bi2JmtVk1ZQ (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBsXuIe0nBO3Bi2JmtVk1ZQ)

Probably my favorite is Beau Miles, he's a uni lecturer, but does adventures and documents them really well. He doesn't often release stuff, but its worth watching for the insights and it can change your view of the world. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCm325cMiw9B15xl22_gr6Dw (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCm325cMiw9B15xl22_gr6Dw)

Foreman and Wilms Adventures.  Older videos from their Australian adventures.  Now their adventures in America.  The videos on restoring an old landrover are a great entertainment.

A few already mentioned, Dangar marine, Beau Miles, Chris Bamman.
MySwags own Craig Tomkinson  :cup:
Simple Living Alaska, which is a young couple documenting there move to Alaska to homestead.
Gridlessness, another family with young kids who are off grid in BC Canada,
Marty T and Angry Ram, same guy runs both channels
Salty Sessions, young guys from Northern WA
Sailing SV Delos, Currently husband and wife with their baby, previously they had 3 or 4 main crew and a few visitors.
Jim Baird, Canadian adventurer, canoeing about northern America.
Back to Basics, QLD diving, camping and fishing.
Jeremy Fielding, Engineering and reusing or repurposing old whitegoods
along with a heap of other fishing channels, like Wild Reaches, My Lure Box, Rokkit Kit, Fishing the Wild, Tight Loops.
I seem to spend more time watching Youtube videos rather then Netflix, Free to Air TV or Fetch tv ect.

Slightly off-topic, do others think the shine starts to wear off a little as they become a bit more popular and then often little more advertorial like, I don't begrudge them making money, and they are providing me with essentially free entertainment so I wish them every success in the world, but often the more successful they get, the more they seem to push the "sponsors" products.

Also in tandem with this, is the setups they start rocking become unobtainable, i.e. Trip in a Van's latest car and van setup would have to be approaching $300K, again the best of luck to them it's about them and their lifestyle, not just made just for my viewing pleasure, but it's just a bit less relatable IMHO.

There are some successful YouTubers who from my perspective get the "sponsors" right, Mightycarmods would be one of those, they have businesses support their channel, and they are very upfront about it, they are also all businesses/products they also used before they supported them. Similarly, Tentworld helped out on one of the Seek adventure vids, and he had previously said he used them in one of his vids about pegs.

You watch ads? Between YouTube Premium (Indian one for 189 rupee a month for the family plan) and AdBlock, I am surprised when I occasionally see an ad when someone else is watching YouTube.

189 rupees is about $4, figure the content supporters still get some support this way.

I've been using adblockers for so long now that I never realised that youtube even had ads as I had never seen an ad.  It was only until a couple of years ago that someone was complaining about youtube ads in a forum that I realised "youtube has ads - really!"  At first I thought that they must of had spyware on their computer.  These days I use "ublock origin" after adblock sold out, on Waterfox(offshoot of Firefox)
As for youtube channels, have a look at "Roaming the Outback".  Brett visits some interesting places, many of which most if of would not have on their itineries I guess.

Then we find a 1972 Ford Fairmont sedan that still has so many usable parts.
But lastly we We find a near complete 1965 Nissan Cedric! someone please come and save it!!

Has anybody mentioned Harry's Garage?

If you are  into exotic cars its a good place to go.

The recent detailed rebuild of the engine on his Lamborghini Espada was interesting. No fancy electronics on what was a very fancy engine for its time. Just a distributor and carburettors.

JCS - Insights into Criminal Psychology

A really amazing insight into the criminal mind, as seen from the tapes of the police interviews and stings etc of the perps.

Each show also includes very skillful narration and analysis from the you tuber regarding the detectives interview techniques,  and the perps body language,  etc, etc... and how the cops break them down, to extract their confessions...

If interested - start with watching:

The Curious Case of Dalia Dippolito ...

=======================

Comedy  - potty mouthed

Bill Burr

He comedicly looks into the soul and heart of relationships and attitudes of men to women ...

Start with this question/rant from him:

"Who ever said there was never an excuse to hit a woman"?

(About the foul language  - "you have been warned", ok...)
