About the beginning of the year, I began thinking of a Red Centre trip for my family during the June/July school holidays in 2014. Started looking at some maps and considering a few route ideas. Had a pretty good idea of what we would do when a thread popped up about a trip to Lake Gregory. Got excited and jumped on that idea. Well we all know what happened there >:( But what resulted from all that kerfuffle was the 2014 Myswag Red Centre Trip. Thanks JKohn for stepping up and planning a great itinerary :cup:
So the next question was, how do we get there and back? We only have four weeks and I wanted to see as much of the outback as possible in that short time. I really wanted to tackle the Simpson but we couldn't do it on our own. Well I suppose we could but it would not be very smart :-[ A couple of mates were keen but they fell by the wayside with family and work commitments. Then along came MrBitchi, his brother brianm and Blueroo. We had a trip. Yipppeee ;D ;D
So the Queensland raiding party's plan is as follows:
21 June - Saturday
Brisbane - Mitchell - 564 kms
22 June - Sunday
Mitchell - Longreach - 611 kms
23 June - Monday
Longreach - Winton - 168 kms
24 June - Tuesday
Winton
25 June - Wednesday
Winton - Georgina River - 478 kms
26 June - Thursday
Georgina River - Blackies (Plenty Hwy) - 398 kms
27 June - Friday
Blackies - Alice Springs - 296 kms
28 June - Saturday
Alice Springs - join myswag tour group and leave after Ross River
11 July - Friday
Ross River Resort - Santa Teresa - 173 kms
12 July - Saturday
Santa Teresa - Old Andado Station - 256 kms
13 July - Sunday
Old Andado - Dalhousie Springs - 173 kms
14 July - Monday
Dalhousie Springs - Mokari Oil Well - 113 kms
15 July - Tuesday
Mokari Oil Well - Lone Gum - 138 kms
16 July - Wednesday
Lone Gum - Poeppel Corner - 144 kms
17 July - Thursday
Poeppel Corner - Birdsville - 156 kms
18 July - Friday
Birdsville - Windorah - 376 kms
19 July - Saturday
Windorah - Charleville - 448 kms
20 July - Sunday
Charleville - Brisbane - 742 kms
Total from/to Brisbane - 7007 kms
MrBitchi and ourselves will be towing our CTs and brainm and Blueroo will be tenting/swagging. I think this is a good combination for tackling the Simpson on the way home.
First up, I started this thread to let others know what our plans are and to solicit suggestions and feedback. Please feel free to offer your thoughts.
Secondly, we would like to invite some other swaggers to join us for the four weeks. JKohn has limited the Red Centre Trip to 15 vehicles for logistical reasons and likewise we will limit our trip to only 6 or so vehicles. So if you want to join us, send me a PM with your email address and I can forward the full itinerary for your consideration.
The invitation is not limited to folks from Brisbane. You may want to join us from further afield. On the way west, you may consider hooking up with the group at Winton on 24 June for the trip across the Plenty Highway. Similarly coming back east, you may wish to make your own tracks after Birdsville.
Anyways, the invitation is out there so feel free to jump on board.
Happy camping

Thanks Linda. We are all pretty excited already. Would love for some others to join us but doesn't appear to be much interest out there at the moment. Maybe closer to the date.

Looks as though you have planned to do smaller bites of travel . Keep ib mind the ground speed will be to the conditions. What looks like 600km of road in good nick could be ripped up after the last rain on lt allow you to travel at 30 km not 100km . Things like that can really stuff your day

Hi KB, the trip sounds awesome, We'd love to go but have only just got our new Dmax and camper, just started to do the upgrades this week,
if there's a 2015 trip I'm certain we'd be looking to do that for sure.

Telling me!!!
We're starting to stress big time as our new ride is supposed to arrive June 2. Considering the usual time frame is 12 weeks from the chassis being completed, and still yet to have that done, we are cutting it beyond fine!!!

Talk about leaving it til the last minute John! So the Red Centre trip will be the maiden voyage then?
Any hints for us as to what it is.......c'mon, just one ;D
(Sorry for the hijack KB!)

We were hoping the June long weekend would be the shakedown trip - we are still 'hoping' but it is looking pretty unlikely.
A hint: It is being built in Melbourne >:D

Good one guys, do not worry we are thinking about it, see what happens.
Was just getting things sorted to travel to Alice with you guys and this morning they (school here in Barcy) asked her to work on the 25th and 26th June. She now has 15 days this term, which is good I suppose :'(.

That's a shame mate but at least it will keep you in lemon coke for a bit longer :D. Let us know if things change.

I wish I could come on this trip too, but it's not to be this year. Very jealous >:D
Just wondering for my possible future trip, can you camp in the community of Santa Teresa, and do you need a permit?
Cheers

Karen, from my research, there's no camping at Santa Teresa. Apparently there is a vibrant artist gallery that is worth a viewing. They also do ceramics. We plan to just keep heading south until we've had enough for one day and bush camp. Next camp with be at old Andado Station.
No permit required for this part of the trip.

KB...
Our plans are changing slightly and we would potentially like to join you on your return leg. I'm now going to be spending 21st to 25th in Adelaide for work and a Simpson crossing is on the bucket list!
Who you have any objections to some tag alongs to birdsville? LC200 towing the rebuilt KK.
Would would then head south down the Birdsville track.
Cheers,
Darren
