Like you, enjoying retirement, worked since I was 14, looking forward to more travel once the wife has her health issues remedied, hopefully all done over the next 12 months.

Most of my stuff has been max 2 year contracts for the last 20 years, with some running to 3 years. Shortest was a 3 month contract for one bit of work, and a lot of mine were seasonal work between April 2005 and late 2007, and again in 2010 - 2013.
Does make my resume a bit long - I think as someone said the other day I need to look at doing a portfolio based on instead.

Went out as self employed which I did for 8 years before injury forced me off the tools.
Been inspecting plumbing combined with industry education and training for last 18 years.
Not sure when my last day of work arrives, I am visiting the financial planner next month, but 5-10 years is my guess.

Considering I’m generation X, I count myself as pretty blessed to have fallen into the job I have now.
When I was doing my apprenticeship Peter Reith was taking the final steps in the casualisation of the workforce.
When I finish my time employers where rejoicing in their new found freedoms and there was only contract on offer for any one new to the trades.
I did the mines thing and I hated only being employed for 2 weeks at a time. I did like the fact that as much as the bosses loved the thought of being able to tell staff ‘don’t bother coming tomorrow’, they absolutely hated the fact that we could all say ‘I can’t be bothered going in today’ and half the workshop would go fishing instead.... ;)
After 4 years of being employed week to week, I was so stocked when I finally got to sign on full time and saw that I could actually build a career with a company. I don’t have any plans on going anywhere and would love to clock up the time that some of the other posters on here have got up their sleeves.
Sadly though, pretty much all of my peers will never know anything other then contract work for most of their working lives.

Present job is shift with great annual leave so been here 15 years.
Hoping to job share in a couple of years. = 3 months a year actual working days with 3 1/2 weeks leave and long service after every 7 years.
Man has to have a plan.

Longest gig contracting was just shy of 5 years.....shortest 3 months.

I worked for a company where the receptionist had been there over 25 years, handed in her resignation for retirement and was told they would not accept it and asked her to consider her options for a week. Two days later they made pretty much everyone in the office redundant including her.

Yup, then they ignore the results of the tests.
I did a "suite" of tests for a company, they said they knew not all would be relevant to my position but they paid for them all so I may as well do them.
Turns out I passed the database admin test never having administered a database in my life!

Hahaha yep had interviews like that ... current employer .... rolled up for interview ... sat in lunch room and just had a chat , i left the room so they could chat , when i walked back in i was offered the job at a dollar amount said i needed a certain number which was aggred on then we shook hands and job was mine ..... never once was any paperwork handed over etc ..... that was approx 15 years ago

And now 3 years in current company
Just realised I've never left a company with perm employment where I could of still been there.
My dad got just under 49yrs before he got a redundancy now to work something similar out

Then re-hired (same roll) with new company owners, did another 6 years then a "sea change" into the Tow Truck business, that was ok at first then the GFC
hit. Got a wages job in Aug 2010,

Moved on post GFC looking for something different and since then have been through 2 redundancies and currently awaiting "announcements" regarding the most recent restructure my group is currently doing. As a result, longest stint has been about 3 years.
Seriously considering ramping up the part time business my wife and I run from home and going full time - I can make my own rules and conditions then!! ;D

Had 2 department changes in that time but on my 6th department manager, and the way things are going, soon it will probably be a 7th.
I believe i'm on my 4th (or maybe even 5th) CEO too...
Government jobs are definitely not what they are cracked up to be, especially when you aren't in upper management, but part of the underpinning that keeps the cogs turning.
Have had enough of the unrealistic pressures and expectations from both management and general public, taken myself back to school to do a post grad this year (although in the same sort of field) but hoping for a better lifestyle and healthier me at the end of it.

Agree wholeheartedly, many upper management now have so many Kpis tied to bonuses that it's all about ticking the boxes, one of the reasons I retired. I recall a national promotion that we ran for 3 months, everything was measured, promo plan, promo materials, coverage, client participation, sales etc, the promo was dog, failed miserably, cost a lot of money.
Discussion at end of the day was about the process not why the promotion failed. Idiots

Rest I have waked out for a better job or the business had been sold and down sized

By Feb 17 they had reduced it by over 35 so I thought I was safe and got two car leases. A week after I signed the second lease they announced a round of redundancies. Of course I was made redundant and stuck with two pretty new leases which really made life difficult.

New employment is only 11 minutes away from home saving 2.5 hours travel every day and 40000 k's on my vehicle every year down to 4000, only one of many reasons for taking up a new challenge.

Back around the late 90's when I was working for myself, I'd had a bugger of a day installing a TV antenna system with multiple outlets, distribution amp etc etc, about a week before Xmas and I was knackered. I got back to my workshop, cranked up the aircon and the music, and had a few refreshing beers by myself. By the time the mrs got home, I was getting a bit hammered, and it was only about 3pm.

Been self employed the majority of the past 27 years....was an apprentice the first 3 years (yep knocked a 4 year apprenticeship over in 3 years) and was a wage slave for a builder for about a year and a half (about 5 years ago), but other then that it's been unpaid holidays ever since.
