Title: Yet another newbie!
Post by: brickiematt on October 25, 2011, 04:20:00 PM
G'day all. We are a couple of fourby tourers and tent campers who, after a recent trip to Fraser, have seen the light and decided to to 'upgrade' to a camper trailer. Been doing some extensive research, and we had no idea how many CT manufacturers there are out there. It's mind boggling and at times bloody confusing! Anyway, we stumbled across your excellent forum, and after a few reads decided to join up. Hoping to get some friendly and useful advice on our purchase from like minded people. Anyway, enough drivel, I'll start a new topic in the general area asking for thoughts on our picks at the moment. Cheers guys.

Welcome to the swag Matt, what sort of camper are you looking for? As you're in Melbourne, Tambo build a great soft floor :)

Hey D4D. I actually dropped into Tambo last night. I live just around the corner and had no idea they were there! Good looking trailer, quality was great, but the thing that impressed me was the tent. Probably the best quality tent I have seen so far. So they are up there on my list. Have also looked at Xtrail and a Chinese import(I know, but I need to cover all the bases!) Intend on looking at Southern Cross, Johnnos and Aussie Jays in the next few weeks. Any thoughts on these anyone?

Welcome aboard Matt,
Don't discount the secondhand market there are a few good buys out there.

Yeah been looking at second hand as well dno. They seem to hold their value pretty well. Not too many around Melbourne at the moment tho.

Hi Matt and Welcome,

I'm a Queenslander so I can't help much from up here, except to say that from what I have read those Tambo's seem to offer amazing value for money.

On your next Frazer trip be sure to visit Trackabout (I own one and am in love) and Customline here in Brisbane.

I have owned a Chinese unit, and they are good if you want to camp once or twice a year, but if you're planning on making this a new part of your lifestyle I would recommend opting for something Aussie built - particularly in relation to Canvass - Dynaproof is world standard.

Well, after hours and hours of research and talking to people, we've finally settled on a CT. An Aussie Jays Big Red. Jason and Rebecca at Aussie Jays were fantastic. Both very knowledgable and extremely helpful. Delivery expected for 14 January, so just in time for Australia Day!! Will have to stick to the tent over Xmas!! Im pretty bloody excited about it, Its a great looking bit of kit, and got the new blue coloured tent as well. Cant wait to take delivery, i'm already planning the 12v system to go in, so the electrical section in this forum will get a good going over in the next few weeks.
Did i mention we're excited!!...... :D

G'day & Welcome, and congrats on your new camper. I don't recall seeing many (any?) of those on here, so look forward to seeing your pics and reading about your experience.

Thanks for all the welcomes guys. much appreciated. Bigjules, Aussie Jays are a small (husband and wife) firm producing their own campers out of Williamstown in Melbourne. I suppose you'd class it as a budget camper (around$9000), but very well made by Jason, who is great to talk to. A wealth of information and very passionate about what he does. There are actually a few other myswagger's with these campers, and this forum is where i first came across them. So, delivery early Jan, and now the question of where to break it in over Aussie Day Weekend. And yes, piccies will be posted. Can't wait!!!!
