Would you buy an ex-rental? Opinions please.
« on: May 11, 2019, 03:53:19 PM »
I have the opportunity to buy a 5 year old Ecomate Explorer for around half or just below half the initial purchase price. I’ve had a look - it’s clearly had a flogging up and down the cape, but everything works, all the fly screens are intact, the canvas while filthy has no holes, and underneath still appears really solid. It’s being sold as is, without rego.

I’m a bit torn. We have a budget to stick to and want a used hard floor off road with as many extras as we can find. This comes with working fridge, lights, battery, 12v pump for kitchen.

I can’t seem to find many of  these campers in good condition for sale second hand to compare the price. Can anyone share any opinions on these campers after they’ve been used to hell and back, and how much they might be worth in this state? I should clarify: we’re happy to do a little work on it if the price is right. BUT would we be better off with an older camper, or a cheaper brand for the same money?

Ta.

Me - No..

its what you cant see that may cause you issues.. chassis, tigs rattling and falling apart, etc etc

but if your prepared to throw a few thousand at it if Shit goes wrong, then go for it.

YMMV

I’d play the game in front of me. Not a lot to hide in a trailer if you know what to look for. If you are looking at it as in a huge upgrade from what you are otherwise prepared to pay then you are a winner all day if it’s honest enough.

A 5 yr old rearfold camper that been well used would want to be cheaper than half price to get me interested. Having a look to compare what else is on the market though is going to be the way to compare value. Rear folds are a little out of fashion so you should be able to get quite good value second hand.

Agree with that Bruce. I may be biased ;D, but I just don't see the big advantage that people talk about with forward folds....

I'd buy an ex-rental if it was good value, and I was comfortable with its' condition.

Thanks for the input - how do I give you all “thanks” like it says on the side line there?? Anyway. I’m struggling to find any campers the same as this one for sale to compare prices... I guess I’ll just try and find other brands with simiar options.

Rear folds are a little out of fashion so you should be able to get quite good value second hand.

I went away from a rear fold only to get away from canvas......not sure why they went out of fashion, but most went out of business, partly due to imported trailers at a far cheaper price, and because every man and his dog want all the mod cons ( hot water, heater etc etc ) for next to nothing.....

I like looking after a camper the same as my cars...always shiny and new looking, so I couldn't buy an ex rental, but everyones different, and only you could answer that question !!

What was the trailer worth new?
What other similar style campers in other brands were approx the same price new at the time?
Might take a little digging but comparing their new prices and their current secondhand prices may be a good guide.

The cheaper imported campers have played havoc with second hand prices. To me it would have to be pretty cheap to consider buying it.

Is the ecomate an imported Chinese camper? Unless they have a “reputable” brand name most campers have massive depreciation anyway.

I am guessing these are the ones which would indicate a FNQ location

Yup. That was the exact one we looked at.

We had a complete change of mind after looking at a slightly older Cub Supamatic... put a deposot on the Cub. :-)
