Hello all,
Hoping there are a few experienced swag users on here.
We are getting to that stage in camping where my 15 year old son no longer is wanting to stay in the camper with us. So I'm wanting to get him a single swag for his birthday of good quality that will last, any feedback is greatly appreciated.

What is your budget would be a good start... prices vary by hundreds :)
What style do you want - hoops at the ends? flat fold over type?

I have this so you can move around in it - but to be honest, I like a 3x3 tent better.. you can get dressed and sit up in it when its pissing with rain with ya boots and gear inside.

I've slept in the snow in this without issue... insulation under it and between you and ground is good idea.

Both myself and my son have the Oztrail Mitchell for when we don't take the camper and to date no problems. Plus being a single you can set it up on top of a stretcher bed which gives for a fantastic nights sleep.
I've removed the centre hoop and use a spreader bar with spigots on both ends

Had oztrail Mitchell singles and didn’t like the centre hoop now have 2 crashpad king singles and a double as well. Well made and designed. Very happy with them.

I stuck with the old style flat swag for a few years longer than I should have given that I am very happy with the Darche Dusk to Dawn swag I bought in January.
Big thing for me is it opens up completely on the side (both sides actutally) with no centre hoops making getting in and out a breeze, which at my age is a bit of a factor.
I set mine up on a stretcher and with a good sleeping bag have been as snug as bug in -3C in the WA Outback.
Many makers have a similar concept at different price points. Kings, and 23Zero and crashpad are some that come immediately to mind.
Once you decide on the style then it's a matter of budget.

I have a Darche Dawn to Dusk (purchased from Tent World :cheers: ). I went the 1100mm one which, for me is a great compromise between interior size when set up and size when packed up. I’m very happy with the design and quality.
I’m a very fussy sleeper and tend to get headaches, neck pain and occasional migraines if I sleep on a bad bed/mattress so, after my first weekend with the supplied foam mat, I upgraded to a Exped Megamat. DEFINITELY not a cheap mattress but, WOW... it’s awesome - better than quite a few hotelsand caravan park cabin beds I’ve slept on!

If you want to pay a premium price for a premium product can’t go past Southern Cross Canvas. I have had mine for 15 plus years and it has been great. I have also had their centre pole tent since 1994 and again grea product.

Oztrail Mitchell for me too. I don’t use the hoops, I just tie up the head end to my awning, roof rack or a tree. I also put it on a stretcher. Had it for years and still going strong

Thanks for all your opinions guys very much appreciated.
My boy can get his P's next year, so Im wanting to get him something strong that he can take through his life. Hopefully he will continue the camping theme in the Aussie bush with his mates as well as the odd camp with his oldies :cup: who I might add are becoming Increasingly "not cool". 8)
I had been thinking on a budget of around $400 and had a leaning with Crash pad or Darche

Great to see you back here!
I can see you've had loads of help from the rest of the swaggers.
Only additional helpful info I thought I might mention to you, is that we have recently opened our store in Sydney (your profile mentions you're in Sydney).
Our Sydney showroom is large, and a lot of swags are on display for you to touch & look at. So could be worth the trip for a looksie. Of course, I do recommend giving the store a call before your trip to check whats' currently on display (sorry I dont know, it's always changing) and that theres stock available. We do also have the 'reserve in-store' functionality on the website if you want to do it out of business hours.

One more point - has he ever used a swag???
I got my first one off a bloke that bought one, used it 1/2 a night got claustrophobia and sold it to me 1/2 price.

The over thing for consideration is you mention that you want a single swag and a swag that the young bloke can take into adulthood and have for many years.
I would ditch the single idea and get a swag for single use of around the 1100-1200 mm wide and may be termed a double. That extra bit of room can make the use so much nicer.

Got to agree. Our swags are 1100s and fit on the extra wide stretchers well. Also, on my last trip to Tentworld, I bought a telescopic awning pole. On talking with Peter, who works there, I bought a spiggot as well and replaced the plastic pole foot with the spiggot, to get a ridge pole that will extend easily to the 2200 mm I need for my swag. The old ridge pole was 2100 mm max and didn't give full stretch, as can be seen on the closer swag. A lot firmer now with the longer pole.

Interesting all the recommendations for swags on stretchers, just go the Bunker route. They pack down much, much smaller than a swag and with an appropriate self inflating mattress for comfort/insulation you just can't go wrong IMO.

No problem with the entrance, fall roll relax. Getting out and up now that is another problem.

I've used my swag on both the ground and stretcher, but the stretcher is so much more comfortable.
When on the beach the underside of the swag doesn't have sand stuck to it when folding up and when on uneven ground you don't have that rock or tree root digging into you.

i suspect the original comment was more directed at why have a swag and a stretcher, instead of a bunker arrangement...
and i suspect the answer is that the bunker style has only been around for a few years, whereas stretchers and swags have been around for ever.
no point in buying a bunker, if you already have a swag that you like, when you just need to add a relatively inexpensive stretcher to complete the combo...
i bought the bunker because we don't have swags and i like the general setup of it better than a swag/stretcher combo...
each to their own... anything to get up off the ground, IMO...

I have a small length of an old tarp cut to swag size I roll out to stop that

And for the alternative perspective....
The wife and I shared her single (900 wide) Darche swag on a 4wding trip over the weekend and we agreed how comfortable it was with both of us in there. ;)
I would say we're both about average build (my beer guts are about as averagly big as other blokes beer guts :) ), but we didn't feel cramped in there at all.
I still have the old style fold over no hoops swag, but it really doesn't get used at all these days.
I was considering getting a new one at some stage and was thinking the 1100-1200mm wide ones would be better, but after our last trip I would only go with a single.
In my opinion the extra bulk in pack up size isn't really needed for comfortable sleeping. Not for me anyway.

Also negates the need of a self inflating mattress which I used to soften the ground.

My stretcher and swag are also used on their own, mainly for kids sleepovers, effectively makes 2 more beds. Also if I’m going to a mates place to have a few drinks I chuck the swag in the back just in case...

Get him a king single, room for his stuff in there as well. I bought a cheap single but its like a bloody coffin, now have 2 doubles. Double is good for myself, a 13yo and my labstaffy x hot water bottle.

One thing Ive noticed is they don't seem to use midgee proof flyscreens?
A lot use superfine mesh, not sure If that stops em though?
