anchor points for child restraints

Gday all

Our son sits in the middle of the back seat of the pajero, and the anchor bolt is right at the back of the car (which effectively cuts the boot in half). It looks like there is room to put an anchor point right behind the back seat from underneath. Is this something you can do yourself? Or are there trained people who can do this? After some google searching from vicroads and the TAC i cannot find info either way.

Look up the yellow pages for car seat fitters. I can't remember what it is called but there is a bar that can be fitted across the back of the seats with restraint points fitted to it. Same kind of thing they do with race harnesses.

It's called a "crab bar".  Try 'google' to find someone in your area.

Was just going to suggest that.  These must be installed by qualified persons.  It's your kids life on the line, so trust no-one but the quality dude.

The local ambulance station might know,they do fittings and must get some that need extra attention

Also check with the manufacturer that the seat is built to withstand the extra downward force that could be created by different angles when fitting a crab bar(this depends on the side window height). You may need to fit later model seat/s to do the job properly.
