Interesting idea for a camper heater?
« on: June 26, 2011, 05:59:05 PM »
Came accross these, basically a car style heater you connect to a heating source.

http://www.t7design.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=65&products_id=180

Now as a quirk, if you are having a fire going, whats to stop you having a heating coil in the fire and a pump to pump water around into the camper, HAY presto, heater.

Humm got me thinking.

I had thought of putting a heating coil around an Ozpig for getting hot water around the camp - maybe add this to it.
If you get your heights right, you might get away with out a pump.

If you could find some light weight hoses that were insulated, could be a goer.
Pump size would have to overcome hose resistance but not be so noisy as to be intrusive.

I am thinking more along the lines of a Dodgy Bros diesel space heater. Just got to find a cheap flame controller.
I got a sweater for Xmas, really wanted a moaner or screamer.

Not such a good idea without pressure relief valves. Donkey hot water systems I grew up with always included a 25 foot high steam vent for when it boiled. Height was to do with standard water head but it is too long ago to remember the exact details.

You could use it full with Glycol (water would freeze when not being used) and maybe a remote gas burner across a heat exchanger of some sort, something you could finely control the heat...  No I like this idea... I think with a bit of thought it could work quite nicely... I was just thinking that water would be fine as long as you emptied each day and probably better as Glycol is horrible stuff if it gets a leak... Reason not to have a fire heating the water.. It could get too hot too quick, very hard to control the temp, very long hoses that would cause a trip hazard,  a small Renai type heat exchanger and a gas flame could be ralatively close to the CT without causing a risk to safety as long as placed far enough away....

A bit of thought...      Thanks for the hint....

Older toyota vans and small buses had a little remote heater with a blower similar to that. If you want a play that may be a cheap place to start

I didn't say it but I was thinking along the lines of the water heater we used in the scouts i.e. pipes running thru the fire, with one end going to bottom of storage tank and the other end going to the top. The storage tank is not sealed (normally has a funnel for refilling as you use the water).
This system makes its own convection current, so the unit above should just be plugged in, in series near the top pipe.

Sounds good to me anyway  ;D ;D

Cobb cooker inside the trailer section with some heat beads in there, they last hours.

I think some more people are going for a month to Mawson Station like http://myswag.org/forum/index.php?topic=13446.0

my original idea was to use this with some sought of waste heat, like a cob or something, particularly in tassie, DANG COLD.

we get dang cold too.
we had -8 at Pineapple flat one year, one of these worked too well in a 9x9 tent, would be good in a trailer add 10 seconds to packup, no coils, water flowing etc KISS.

this looks good too

Hi,
   yep that's nipply.

I've used gas radiators, gas lamps and even the gas stove to keep warm in our old van, but is was pretty draughty, with large slots cut into the door, and gas fridge ventilation catered for. Definitely not a winter highland camper.
Friends had a close call one very cold night moored on a yacht when they over estimated the ventilation available for a gas stove. Fortunately one of them recognised the incomplete combustion in the gas flame and opened the main hatch before any ill effects were caused to the crew.

cheers
