Watch out if you're selling online...
« on: June 01, 2011, 08:39:03 AM »
We are well aware of scammers when we're trying to sell a car/camper/boat etc. online.

This is an interesting new threat vector to watch out for.

Got our Lancer for sale on Carsales (& here, blatant plug  ;D )
Carsales warn about scammers, & I'm actually looking forward to 'em  >:D  I love when they don't return my emails, but I love it more when they hang up on me

I'm sorry, but I just CAN'T understand when ppl fall for them, especially the one getting around at the moment where someone rings you & claims your computer has problems. Why would someone be ringing me out of the goodness of their heart, willing to fix it for a nominal fee? My 1st question has always been..."Why are you accessing my machine without my permission? - yes, I know they're not really - "What's your name and company so I can inform the police?" They always hang up  ???
As a rule, people are just to gulible for their own good :(
Or the one's who get burnt with "the deal of a life-time", or the "get rich quick" scheme. Greed drives them, & I've no sympathy because they've lost their money!

You cant trust Ebay

Be careful about buying anything on eBay . . .

I spent $50 on eBay for a penis enlarger.

Bastards sent me a cheap magnifying glass.

 The instructions didn't even say NOT to use it in the sun.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

There is no problem that cannot be solved by the use of high explosives.

Some of the scams are really clever and even appear to come from valid sites like your bank. Have a read of this thread:

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1702033

The end result was that even though the person logged into his banking site, there was malware on his machine that inserted another page requesting certain account details; and it all looked legitimate. Would you blame that person for giving those details?

Short answer Yes id blame them, all from their statement of

it then came with another screen i have never seen before

Without them looking into it further.  Since when has a bank asked online for extra details like that? Never.

Its VERY easy to see when other sites are pretending to be your bank sites, but some people never spend the 1/10th of a second to look.

I think there is also a trust issue.

The vast majority of users (almost all?) would never expect a phishing attempt from within a legitimate site like their bank. Some might question why they are being prompted; most will just assume that the request is from the bank. Seeing that they logged into the bank directly and not via some dodgy email, why would they think there was anything malicious going on?

My point being, that there is a broad spectrum of gullibility. That is what makes scamming successful.

the one getting around at the moment where someone rings you & claims your computer has problems.

I had this one a few weeks back.
He stated his name and said he was from Windows.
My computer was sending a lot of stuff to them and they wanted to fix it for me.
Him: If I was sitting behind my computer?
Me: No!
Him: Is it turned on?
Me: No! (he should know that)
Me: And I am not turning it on for you. See ya.

I have also replied to emails a number of times with the above or sometimes i haggle the split and demanding i get paid in Doubloon's as its the local currency. Its amazing how many times they will reply.

I also engage with nutcases trying to sell me their religion door to door. I have had 7th day Adventists bailed up for an hour discussing things like creation, and how they are derived from incest etc.

They are just like all scammers, they prey on the weak of mind. Only they suck more in than those trying to steal your money

When they are at our door, I will grab my Bible and show them what to says.
They have another Bible and only use the passages which they think applies.

The all time classic response to the telephone marketers...

The guy who answers as a police detective and proceeds to interrogate the caller as they've called a phone number that is currently involved in a murder investigation and are asked all sorts of pertinent questions relating to said murder. Phone gets hung up pretty quick from that one!  ;D

Another mate likes to use the tactic of "just hold a sec would you" and goes and leaves the phone in front of his stereo...turned up way loud! He figures its their companies money that he's wasting by keeping them on "hold"!  :cup:

Tell your mate "well done" Humbolt
I especially love the responses from the drop-kick from the company, claiming they don't try to rip anyone off, they're only ringing people on spec in case they're having trouble with their machine(s). And I'm jesus christ *lol*
