I know we're booked in for storm out our way.

From our place, we watch them head straight for the centre of Brisbane.
Just the fact we are getting a 41 degree day tomorrow and we are taking the Fleetwood out a for an evening classic car meet up, should near guarantee a kick arse storm.
The last two times I wanted to take the car out it stormed, so we may as well shoot for a hat trick.

We did well too Kev, Tree change trip to a spot  just out of Armidale, saw us with two or three storms a day, for five days out of the last seven with four lots of hail .
Good thing it wasnt overly large hail [ well maybe ] Might have been able to write that useless Dog of a Rav off and get something better .

Sitting at Sydney airport looking out the window at the bright sunshine and not a drop of water falling from the sky, wondering why the airport has been shut down due to “weather” for the last 30 minutes.

I know Sydney people are soft, but to shut down the whole airport without a single drop of rain is taking things a bit too far...

If there is lightning around they shut airports. Not sure of the distance but someone will know. Would you like to work out in the open on the tarmac with dozens of light towers around.

Just had a storm cell pass through, small hail, power lost.
Pretty intense all the same.
Had a heads up from Al, that there was hail in it, he is in Coffs.

Yep, I get that.

I’ve been a platinum frequent flyer for about 7 or 8 years now, so been in an airport or 2 and had many delays due to weather.

Just usually airports are closed when there is rain pelting down and lightning and thunder all around.
Sydney is a special case (in more ways then one ;) ) if there is a little red dot on the radar anywhere in a 50km radius they shut it down.
The airport has been closed for over an hour now and we’ve had maybe 2 or 3 minutes of rain and no noticeable lightning that I could see from my view across the tarmac.

I get the safety thing, but some people just like to ride that wave a bit too far.
And I’m sure the queue of people lined up beside me trying to find a way to get home after the last 8 flights got canceled for no real reason might agree with that.

FYI, sun is still shining but just announced they’re shutting everything down again....

Mates car at Ulong copped it. We had small hail at Safety Beach.
Really need to clean out the garage so I can get the Y62 in there.

Maybe a bit of a  over action by yourself. You may not have had rain but I can assure you that parts of Sydney has been smashed. My daughters car has been trashed with smashed front and back screens. And yes she is under a flight path. I think when pilots have their passengers life in their hands they would prefer not to fly through a storm if it can be avoided.

Finally got home after 6 hours of delays and after watching some of the footage from other parts of the city this afternoon I can see there was some severe hail around the area this evening.
But in my defense at the time I posted the airport had been shut for over an hour and there was absolutely nothing, like seriously nothing, anywhere around the terminal or tarmac. The sun had been out the whole time.

The second storm that shut the airport did dump a bit of rain and the 3rd storm that hit after we had boarded the plane was nothing major, but still had us locked in the plane for another hour and a half. I landed several times in much more serious weather then anything that hit the airport tonight.

The first shutdown was an overreaction from the airport and my rant was perhaps a little too harsh, but was just from frustration about not being able to get out of that grubby city and missing out on the family dinner my kids had prepared for me tonight. Walking in the house at midnight was not the happy early Christmas dinner that we had planned. But at least I got home. ;)

There's been a bunfight at the GC over the last couple of years as they're putting in an ILS system at GC Airport & the flight path will track over suburbia for most of the length of the Coast, so people are complaining about potential noise :-\

When this all started, I saw a letter in the paper from an airline pilot.

He said that GC already has a landing system (PAP or similar ???) but that only let's them get down to 500' without being able to see the ground ::), but ILS will get them down blind to 250' :o

250', you can't see the ground, & you're still trying to land ???

Hello, Captain - this is Fizzie in 6C. We've had a quick poll & we've decided it's a bloody stupid idea to try & land in conditions like this, so lets divert somewhere else where it's not raining!

But they would train for this, and would do it all over teh world... probably like reversing a camper to us.

few years back when we bought new office in Brissy, we flew to into town and there was a MASSIVE storm, so we circled for 45 mins.. .landed safely... drove through town and it looked like Beirut.. wasn't one caryard that wasn't totalled.. but we didn't land, as it was dangerous...

Was horrible at work this morning (Grafton area), has been all week actually, so muggy. Last night's storm was a ripper, looks like more on the way.

Just started to rain here in Lawrence.
