Title: Waeco Fridge Freezing everything
Post by: Dragonfly on March 11, 2020, 08:11:31 AM
Of course, now that we are planning an expedition, our rock-solid 60L Waeco Fridge has started acting up. Has not slipped a beat for 10 years. I suspect that the thermostat is blown or faulty, following a surge.

Anyone know anything about these? Any suggestions on where to go for a repair?

(Sometime I surprise even myself at how stupid I can be... this is a Waeco CF60, not an ARB  ???)

Yep sounds like the thermistor has gone

First maybe open her up and check that there is not a back up thermistor already there. For example the older Waeco CF80's had such a reputation for blowing thermistors that they built it with 2 and you simply swapped the plug over to the other one when failure occured

Failing that just google and take it to a local repairer it is a pretty simple job but can be labour intensive so get a quote first and then weigh up the price vs the value of a 10 year old fridge

Not sure if the Arb is the same as weaco, but the old weaco’s had a emergency switch that would turn on the the compressor without temp control. I was going to ditch my old cf50 because it kept freezing everything until I noticed the switch near the plug had been bumped.
Btw from my understanding if a thermistor is faulty / open circuit, the compressor will not run

see ARB has released a new fridge/freezer including dual zone.

If you need to do the Thermistor, its a piece of cake.
See here, I did my CF50

It’s an easy fix to put an aftermarket thermostat in as well. My cf30 has an Engle mechanical controller
Plenty of digital ones available on eBay as well

This. I opened mine up after hearing exactly the same thing and lo and behold there was the spare one. Connected it up and hasn't missed a beat since

Could just wire in a 12 V on /  off timer and control the run time / temp that way, till you get back ..

If you want someone to check it out I can recommend CoolFactor, 5/314 Governor Road, Braeside, VIC 3195, 03 9587 5244.

They have done work for me in the past and I was impressed. The only thing is that will charge about $95 to look at it but take it off bill if it is repaired, obviously has been caught by a lot of non-payers.

Just to close this out - it was the thermistor. Repaired by Cool Factor in Braeside - they get a big thumbs up from me. Thanks everyone.
