Title: Laptop has died
Post by: gronk on July 26, 2020, 04:17:06 PM
My laptop has died......fell from a great height and is looking pretty sad.
Question is.....I've ordered an adapter cable ..sata to usb...can the hard drive I've taken out be easily accessed by my other laptop so I can transfer all my photos ? Will it see the hard drive just like an ordinary external hard drive ?

Is should as long as you didn't encrypt it. I'd go to a computer store and get a caddy/case for it and install it in that.

Ha ha...looks surprisingly normal to look at, but screen is cracked all over and the case is splitting at the seams. A photo won't show much ?

Is that so I can use it after removing the files I want ?
No, I didn't encrypt it...not even sure what it means let alone know how to do it ?  ;D

Yup, you can put it in a case and then plug it in via USB to any computer.

$20-30 investment for the convenience of plugging it in whenever you like in case you forget/remember other files you need.

Yeh, good point. If it downloads OK I might then buy a case....then I'll have 2 drives !!

Ha ha...none...I don't download that sort of stuff. Might watch it but don't download it !!  ;D

Photos is the only thing I can think of that's important !

Spent most of today personalising the other win10 laptop up to standard. Passwords etc etc....still don't like the ease of use of it....or lack of !

Fair call mate, just having a giggle.
I've used an external HD for years,  connected to my router so all devices can be backed up and stuff can be accessed as long as I have internet connection.
When it comes to the Tablet and Phone(Samsung) they are set to backup automatically to My website and cloud.
It's a bugger of a lesson to learn, I lost a ton of stuff a few years back, even back up my website every month.

Hope you get it all sorted.

but screen is cracked all over

Gave the young bloke my notebook to take to school a number of years ago ::)

He swears black & blue he didn't do anything, but within a week it came home like this :'(

We assume it was sitting in his pack & somebody either kicked it or sat on it :'( >:(

Was able to get the screen replaced OK though, so it's now a go away unit, rather than taking a full-size laptop.

This photo is also now the desktop background ;D

Got the spare laptop working...mostly....
Printer worked fine with win7, even though I was only running one cartridge ( black)....but no, not with win10....says it has no ink ? Maybe it sees the other empty cartridge space and doesn't want to play ?

Win10 has done an update this arvo and the mouse works fine but the trackpad has gone haywire ?

That should do the job.  You don't necessarily need an enclosure as D4D suggests.

My laptop also did wierd things on Windows 10. Took me a while to figure it was the driver for the trackpad.  I installed older drivers and fixed the problem.

Not the best enclosure to be carrying or storing a device like a harddisk in.

OK all you smarter people than me....I have hooked up the old hard drive out of my stuffed laptop, but it doesn't show any picture folder.
Are my 1,000's of pictures still there or have they somehow not been saved to the hard drive ?

Might be under a user profile folder...

Try just searching for *.jpg on that drive and see what comes up...

Assuming Win10 and you saved your pics to your profile pictures folder.

Can you see a 'users' folder under the root folder?
If so go into that and see if there is a folder with your username.
If so go into that and you should see a 'pictures' folder.
That folder should have your pictures.

My old smashed laptop was win7 and I have plugged the hard drive into my newer laptop win10 !
I have a users folder...just trying to access the "owner" part of it.

Thanks very much.

I will now backup the 2 yrs of pics that I didn't add to the hard drive I have all the other pics on. When I do that, can I format this "old" hard drive and use it for a 2nd backup ??

The old hidden files attribute gotcha :)

I wouldn't backup to spinning rust. As Bird says store it in the 'cloud', try OneDrive on your Win10 if you want the most user friendly option.

So, happy to trust a non-trustworthy drive, instead of a safe and secure cloud storage solution?

Good luck with that.

I’d trust OneDrive storage over any hardware drive, particularly a mechanical HDD...

Standard methods for back ups should be two separate local, onsite copies and one separate offsite copy.

Photos are not something to skimp on storage with... can never get them back.

It's actually a logical not a physical drive. There are many layers of redundancy built into the system, it's not just one copy.

Chances of 2 drives Fukien up on same day, slim, unless say your house burns down in a bushfire or something dramatic like that.
How safe or secure are clouds. Unless you are worried that your explicit photos are able to be viewed by some 3rd party? It’s more about you being able to one day access those valuable memories should the worst happen to your other copies

Slim, yes... but plenty of things can knock out two local drives at once...

Power spikes or sudden blackouts
Drives bought from the same faulty batch
Buggy automatic firmware upgrades
Computer being bumped
Insect or rodent issues
Software issues on NAS or PC where they are installed
Malware locking access to drives

For a very small outlay, why take the risk... ?

Storage is cheap nowadays.  I would be gutted if I lost all my photos because I was a tightarse or wore my tin foil hat too tightly.

Cloud storage is typically encrypted at rest with a user key that only you know to prevent 3rd party access. Data is also striped across many physical drives so impossible for somebody to 'walk out' of the datacenter with the drive of your 'personal' pics.

Not a great thing to do with drives either, to be honest... drives are designed to be used and random handling can cause its own issues...

But hey, do what you want... we’ve tried to offer advice on a cheap, reliable and relatively easy option for backups...

More the chance of the motors/integrated circuits failing due to lack of use. Also the drives can degauss over time as they are not an archival media.

That’s just for the storage...

If you ever need to recover files, it will cost you...

Might need to do a bit more research as to a suitable solution...

Things like Glacier and Backblaze usually require separate client software to allow files to be uploaded to the cloud, or specific scripting time be written.

For your scenario, I’d be looking at OneDrive or Google Drive...

Easy to setup and troubleshoot, if necessary...

OK smart fellas amongst you all.....stupid win10 has lately decided I need to enter my password on start up.

I've googled it weeks ago and entered the netplwiz in the box and unticked the sign in required box ( it was already unticked , but I ticked it and unticked it ).

Sometimes it doesn't ask for a password, but lately it does ....checked the netplwiz stuff and still unticked.

Has anybody got their win10 NOT asking for a password, and what did you do to make it perform like a "normal" computer ?

Yep, I have to . When I 1st installed win10 it never asked for a password. Then a month or so ago, it asked for a password. I unticked the box, and it stopped it. Now it's asking every time I start the computer, even though I've supposedly told it not to ?

Some people may think it's a minor inconvenience, but I think it's a pain in the ar*e !!

might be worthwhile changing your password and then trying the netplwiz option again...

could be an issue with the current security token...

Has anybody got their win10 NOT asking for a password, and what did you do to make it perform like a "normal" computer ?

Normal?.... Big ask on win10 LOL..

if my 75yo mum can use windows 10 without issues, then 'normal' is eminently achievable...  ;D

might be worthwhile changing your password and then trying the netplwiz option again...

could be an issue with the current security token...

I'm not saying it's not usable, it's just such a PITA. I use win10, win7 and Linux MInt 19.3.. Any time I want to do something with as little hassle as possible, I always go to the Mint laptop. And If I absolutely need to use windows, I use Win7 Ultimate, running as a virtual machine on the Linux Laptop, Win 10 only does two jobs that I can't do using Linux or Win7 (easily).

that's fair, but i have a completely different experience with Windows 10.

every OS has it's issues.

but back to the issue at hand....
