Yeah, watching that Steffo. As long as it holds off on the mornings we should be fine. The dome is fully undercover and once the Perlite render is on it's wrapped in plastic and covered with a tarp to slow down the cure, so the rain hopefully wont be a problem.

Fantastic looking Pizza oven and you have done a great job.

My Father use to be a Bricklayer and due to his age they taught the apprentices back in the olden days then how to make odd shape things and fireplaces etc.  So over the years he built a few Pizza Ovens like the one in the photo but back then there wasn’t any pre-cut bricks or templates. Each brick was individually cut and to stop if falling in on itself/hold the roof bricks in place they use to fill the middle with brickies loam, then once dry dig/hose out the sand.

He has since passed so I wasn’t able to get one built at our current house, but I do have a steel pizza oven and agree they are not a cheap investment. But well worth the taste you get from homemade plus it’s somewhere to stand around and drink beer while entertaining and waiting for the pizzas to cook.

I can remember when I was a wee lad dad would take me to work with him on the school holidays (in the 70's dad was a foremen for a construction company ;D) and it used to amaze me watching the brickies pick up a brick in their hand and split it with a trowel. Thankfully all my oven bricks came pre-cut.

Reached a milestone today... construction is finished  ;D ;D ;D
Yesterday and today we got the final 2 coats of render done. Only took about an hour per coat, but it had to be left 12h between coats. All up, roughly 50mm of render over the dome. Now it gets wrapped in plastic and left to cure for a few days, then I can start to fire it in. 7 day process starting with a small fire for a couple of hours, increasing in size each day to drive the moisture out of the dome. Once it's been through 4 full firings, the dome gets painted with an elastomeric sealer and the grey chimney cap gets painted in a high temp satin black.

Still lots to do, but we're getting there. Need to sand and seal all the timber. I've got some draws to install under the right of the bench, there's a cupboard to go over the sink, and lots of trimming and tidy up to do.... But we're a hell of a lot closer to the end than the start now.

Couple more jobs ticked off the list today. Draws under the bench and a cupboard over the sink.

Birdies Garden Beds, big tick!!
The silver beds are actually tree protectors, half the price of the veggie beds and the same result. They also don't rot like the old wine barrels.

Planted some screening plants along our boundary after cleaning up all the creepers and blackberries. 42 holes to dig. Now all they need to do is grow

The first fire  :D

Started the curing process yesterday. Only a little fire, but took the oven to 100deg for 3 hours then shut the door. Same again today followed by 2 days with a slightly bigger fire, and then another 2 days of bigger again. Will be ready for it's first full firing on Sunday   8)

Trust me, we've thought long and hard about this. We spent quite a while pondering the idea and or us it's all about the entertaining more than the personal use, although it'll get used quite a bit for that. We live in a good close community and have a core group of neighbours who we socialise with pretty much every week (and we all go camping together). Most weeks we are all 2 doors down from us for Friday night drinks, and most Sundays everyone comes to our place for sundowners. Quite often we will have a Saturday night special at our place for a fireside cook up, which is why our fire pit is into it's 3 incarnation. Its had to grow to accommodate the crowd  8) It's quite common for us to have at least 8 adults + kids just for a non-event Saturday night gathering. Special events (like birthdays) attract even bigger crowds.

Yes it's a Shite load of money if Domino's cardboard is to your liking  >:D, but I see it is value adding to our home and an improvement to our outdoor entertaining area.

And this is exactly why we built it. Saturday night, no formal occasion or invites, and we ended up with 11 people gathering for no other reason than the fact we all enjoy each others company  :D

Last night in the oven we made a roasted eggplant dip, melted triple brie dip, and flat breads for starters, then 7 pizzas for the mains.
