Rawson to Howqua
« on: December 07, 2010, 06:31:21 PM »
Hi all. Can anyone tell me what the road between Rawson and Howqua is like? We have chosen to travel the path less travelled to get Howqua for a wedding on the weekend and we are just wondering what we may encounter. The Boss decided it would be a good idea to take the scenic route and I'm all for it but a heads up would be nice!!

Thanks in advance,

Lowy
I'd rather be looking at it than looking for it!!

rough roads at the best of times, with this rain .. who knows???

allow 4.5 -> 5 hrs (average speed 30 -> 40kmh) and take a chainsaw.
the extra time will allow "some" track clearing.

couple of ways to go:
Walhalla, Mt Useful, South Rd onto Jamieson-Licola rd, Jamieson, Howqua.
or
Aberfeldy, Matlock, Woods Point, Jamieson, Howqua.

take your luck on the day ;D, probably six of one and a half dozen of the other.

Have a good one ... stay the night and drive back the next day.

Thanks Stevo. Google Maps says about 3hrs for the trip...who knows.I had planned on chucking the Husky in for fallen trees and as far as the rain goes we'll see what we get between now and Friday night.I don't fancy missing the wedding because we wanted to take the scenic route. We may come back that way when time is on our side.We plan on staying up there for a couple of nights anyway for a spot of fishing!!!

just had a look at Google maps and 3hrs18 for 160 km is 48.5km/h average.
thats the Woods Point way...but Thompson Valley Rd (check first, but it was closed ... dunno if it's open again)
Do-able in good conditions, but also it's a wedding and you can't be late.
Better to be early and have to kill some time in the pub than be late ;D

Couple days fishing sounds great

We were on the Woodspoint-Jaimeson road just a few weeks ago and it was in pretty good condition.
But it always seems to take longer than you think.
You always need to take it easy as there's likely to be some drongo coming the other way too fast that you'll need to avoid.

Mmmmm....the pub.I may just try another route. You are right about the fact that it's a wedding Stevo...if we are late it may not go down well. I've had another look and we go out through Tanjil Bren via Willow Grove!!!

Got there no worries.South Face Road below Baw Baw to Tanjil Bren then the Link Road to Nine Mile Road and on to Mattlock.Beautiful drive and no dramas with other drivers giving us grief. The High Country is stunning at the moment...green as can be and more Tree Ferns than I have ever seen in my life.Get amongst it!!!
