The Gibb River road is officially opened some time between mid April and mid May. This is when the graders move in to do the first of 3 grades. The peak tourist season (June-August) is when the corrugations get bad because of the amount of traffic and the second grade is down. Then the third grade is down at the end of the tourism season ready for the wet. The end of the tourist season is usually around the end of October most places close down. Any time after this is way too hot to be up there. Or so it tells me on the web :D

We went late August to September, busy but most grey nomads were moving on.
Still need to book especially in Broome, Middle and the Cape.

Looks superb.
Unfortunately for us, we won't be able to get that amount of time to make it up there for it.
-
Yes it's a fair amount of time and do expect a lot of people will not be able to do the whole trip but they are free to shorten the trip to suit.
Mark
-
Sounds awesome! Me being a northern novice have you worked out a rough total re distance?

My parents were just there last week and absolutely raved about it too.
They're also doing the Mimbi Caves tour on the way between Halls Creek and Fitzroy Crossing. We didn't get there on our trip, but I'll let you know whether they thought it was worth the stop Mark. http://www.mimbicaves.com.au (http://www.mimbicaves.com.au)

Yep. It really is special.
It's relatively unknown at the moment, but give it a year or two....

Looks a good trip and plenty of time to enjoy and explore.
Did same trip in 2011 only the other way from Alice to Broome then Middle Lagoon (Magic Place) then Derby and Gibb River road
Only places I didn't see was El Questro and Bungle Bungles.
Will have to put that trip in my diary as I would love to go back as there was so much I didn't see last time.

If its OK I would like to suggest having a look at Mornington-Marion Downs.
I have camped there twice and it has excellent facilities for camping and some great attractions like Diamond gorge and Sir John gorge which don't have hoards of visitors and just as spectacular as most other places.
Link for those that may wish to visit.

.....Middle Lagoon (Magic Place)...
Agree with that, but camp fees raised eyebrows......

Not sure where to post this but thought he was as good as any. Relates to the Kimberley. Just found this on Faceless book.

Just an update, we will be spending some time in Kalumburu which will be added to the Itineray.
Mark
-
I have been doing some more planning and reading to get the Itineray sorted. Currently doing research on the Cape Leveque area.
I will break the Itineray up into 4 sections in 4 separate threads to make it easy.

We are currently in Katherine and have found a caravan park that will suit the group.

Whoa, just checked the Mornington camp prices. That's $60 for an unpowered site for our family. No wonder its not crowded.
