Become a stem cell / bone marrow donor
« on: March 23, 2019, 12:44:11 PM »
Hi all,

Can I ask that everyone that is between the ages of 18 - 45 please become a stem cell / bone marrow donor.  I am about to go through a stem cell transplant in April and it is only possible through the amazing generosity of a stranger after a failed familial match.  If you are unable to become a donor can you please share to your Facebook feed and lets see if we can't save this blokes life. The stem cells are taken from your blood not your bones and is similar to giving blood except it takes a few hours.
Regards,
Russell

RJD, good luck with your transplant, my son is stem cell donor, I donated blood for many years until a serious heart infection.
Blood donating was something our father got us to do and I am proud to say my kids have continued the tradition
I hope all goes well for you.

I have been on standby 3 times to donate marrow or stem cells, never got to go through with it though.

I have been on the donor register for over 20 years. I got a call out of the blue about 5 years ago saying I might be a match. Had the test but I wasn't a close enough match.

I was happy to go through to donation but I believe it's quite a painful operation/recovery.

Cheers

Good luck with it. I can't give blood, due to being a carrier of hemacromatosis. Don't know about plasma or other associated thingies though. 🤔

Foo you should double check that.
There is  hemacromatosis in our family. Luckily I have only 1 gene.  When I was getting it checked out I was told donating  blood is one way to reduce your iron count

Okay, I have a major gene and an unidentified one and they won't take blood from me.

Down in the South, they take your blood as part of a treatment program for Hemachromatosis, either Blood Bank or Hospital, but discard it.  If the Iron levels are too high.

You better check with your G.P.

Unfortunately I was born in the UK in the "Thatcher" years so Australia doesn't want any of my blood or other stuff, until I die that is and then they are willing and happy to harvest any of my organs that are suitable, which I have no issues with at all, just would prefer to be able give some of my O+ blood whilst alive.

blood bank wont take my blood either.  Had an Ablation several years ago now.  Apparently having three different heart rates ain't good for you.  Now as I have had an 'op' on my heart the blood Bank don't want to take blood as it may place stress on my heart.  My caridologist has no problem with my heart but not much I can do.  Have marked to be a organ donor and a while back via MyGov updated my records to be an Organ Donor.
Cheers

They wont take my blood eitehr, I have a needle phobia...
was the best when I was in hospital after the big one, I had golden Staph... 3 times...
Third time the Shit they gave me was that toxic, I was on 3 hourly blood tests as if the % of this stuff in your system got too much it could cause irreversible damage or death they told while I was quarantined :'( ...
Nothing like being woken up all night by some vampire with no idea how to take your blood first time, it was like I had every trainee there was...  and 1/2 asleep they wonder why your pist off.

Back to the subject - when we had paper licenses, you had a tick box to donate organs, is that something you have to register with Vicroads now? Or it just happens anyway
On my paper license I only had a bike back then didnt own a car, I had 'whatevers left' marked on it.

And yet I've met more people affected by CJD in Australia than I ever did in the UK and those people had never been to the UK!!

I’m too old. But that means I remember jokes from back then.

What’s the difference between PMT and BSE?

One is bovine spongiform encaphalitis, the other is mad cow’s disease  >:D
