Went out for a ride today to some new tracks within our 5km limit. Had a blast with some tight single technical tracks with rocks and drops.

Had my first off for a while with a bit of bark of the elbow. Slow speed spud stack, oops. Tore my favourite riding jersey as well. Might be a bit sore tomorrow at work.

After some thoughts on some new tyres for my new to me CX bike.

Currently I’m running 700x33 Michelin power gravel tyres.

I’m spending more time on the road than gravel and want to fit a more road oriented tyre but still maintain the ability to ride well formed dry gravel roads if the need or desire arises.

I’m looking at either running a wide road slick like a continental GP5000 in 32mm

Otherwise I’m looking at a fast rolling gravel tyre like the Panaracer gravel king slick or the Schwalbe G-one speed.

If I ride sensibly on dry gravel is a 32mm wide GP5000 going to let me down?

All options would be setup tubeless.

Appreciate thoughts on the above ideas.

Running tubeless should help with punctures and you should be ok with the Conti with the correct tyre pressure and adjusting your riding style.

My bike has found itself on bitumen more than gravel also.  In the process of setting up a second wheelset to switch in when needed rather than have a compromise for two different surfaces.  Not in a position for N+1.  40C for gravel, 32C for road (GP5000).  Is a second wheelset an option for you?

Yes this is where I’m headed eventually. A second set of rims. For now I need to choose a compromise tyre.

I don’t really want to spend up huge on the second set. Just something strong and reliable to run in the gravel. I don’t know what makes a good wheelset or where to start looking to but some.

Once it’s all adjusted and the hoops locked in place it’s 5 minutes to load them all on.

But yes it was a fun Tetris game to get them all to fit nicely !!

Yes. Running tubeless.  The bladed spokes are pretty good but are sharp if you slip while fitting everything up (don't ask how I know....)

It's a Giant Toughroad SLR GX 1.  Gravel/Adventure bike.  Needed a do everything bike for road, gravel, kids.  Change of wheelset managed to shave about 750g off the weight of the bike.

How'd they go converting to tubeless? I undecided on if I'll convert mine.

Wheels are tubeless ready.  Already taped and valves supplied by DT Swiss.  GP5000 are a pain to fit as they're so tight but also meant they seal easily and inflate with a floor pump.  Only hassle was using Stan's Race sealant which needs to be poured directly into the tyre before fitting up rather than injecting through the valve.

Also have all the other axle end caps so if I upgrade bikes I can keep the wheels and switch out to whatever I need.
