Title: Which off road camper
Post by: dap3dap on July 19, 2020, 10:33:18 AM
Hi all, I am new to this site. I was looking for a off road camper for me and my family (two adults and twin boys) and someone recommend I joined this site as it was full of very informed people who would be able to help my choose the right camper for my family. I think I’d like a camper which we can all sleep in and not the boys sleeping in swags or sleeping bags in the awning. So which camper is recommended? And preferable made to last so can last us a long time.

That basically only leaves you with a hybrid style trailer and maybe some of the forward folds . I have not seen any forward/rear fold that has built in beds though .

But going on the first part of your post ,  I was looking for a off road camper, that does not leave many options even in the hybrid style camper .Yes most hybrids are stated as off road , but due to weight and design they are not designed as a true off road trailer .

Hi, the kids bed doesn’t need to be built in I’ve seen some forward fold campers where the seating area or area at the end of the bed converts into a sleeping area for the kids?

It depends on how many beds. Double fold campers have enough room if the kids want to share a bed, or turn the dinette into another double/queen bed.

If you really want a Off road trailer and are happy with setting up bunk beds or stretches , A good quality soft floor comes with a large enough sleeping area inside the main tent area .

It really depends on budget.

If that isn't an issue, buy Aussie made.

If that's out of reach, I'm liking the look of blue tongue.

A Modcon Quattro (i have one) meets your requirements, with 2 single beds and a queen. You'd need to get a second hand one, i don't think Modcon are making that model any more. Any of the forward fold campers will work, but kids may not like sharing a double bed for too long.

Space wise, a soft floor wins every time though, and you'll probably pick one up for a good price as everyone wants forward fold now.

Why not look at a good used soft floor for < 10 k and spend the other 40,000 on fuel..

Not disagreeing that the majority are looking at forward folds now, but I keep an eye on soft floor camper prices, and COVID has noticeably caused used prices to go up as the supply/demand scale has changed. I had a couple of people selling camper bits in my watch list (mainly from the MDC auctions a while back) they have said that as soon as the restrictions were lifted that the stuff has been flying out the door. I think the humble soft floor is undergoing somewhat of a resurgence at the moment.

Maybe something like the Camprite ??    A bit up there in the $$'s, but maybe able to pick up a used one if you shop around for a reasonable price.

OP has stated they don't want their kids in the awning. Awning/ bottom of soft floor, same same in my books.

Forward fold is good. But if budget isn't a concern, dual/double folds are going to give you the best 'off the ground' space.

Just be mindful of weight. They can be very heavy and even though they may all look alike, there can be 500kg between them in weight. Not to mention ball weight!!

Jayco Hawk Outback or similar? Will handle offroad if you take it easy and are sensible with it, the missus will love it too! My Jayco Dove Outback has been on beaches, rough bush tracks, corrugations etc etc and so far so good. If I tried to keep up with the "faster" campers on the rough bits I'm sure it would slowly rattle apart but over the last 7 years it has been great.

You've got to decide realistically what "offroad" means to you, and will you actually do it? There are a lot of offroad trailer owners that spend 99% of their time in caravan parks. Nothing wrong with that at all, but in my mind they could have had a more suitable camper for much less $$$ if that's all they were doing.

$55k will net you a fantastic camper, that's for sure.

Lifestyle Iconn...queen size bed with double bunks. Every man and his dog seem to like this style of camper and approx $30,000.

One is inside with the family (the tent) one is outside (the awning). and 10k's cheaper.

Don’t write off a rear fold. We chose one over the forward folds for a family of 4. The kitchens, awning space, main mattress and storage are all bigger and better in a rear fold and sticking up bunks takes no time. Just another option.

Dap3dap

if your after a quality Aussie camper for the family have a look at Camprite, we’ve had a TL8s for 9yrs and can’t fault it and will probably end up getting another one at a later date . That being said there’s some interesting options out there at the moment.

Not Australian, Not light . But we have a Stoneycreek Ff6 which is front fold rear slide so nearly king bed at front and nearly queen bed at rear. Our two kids sleep very comfy together ( 8&3 ) has been a great camper trailer.

We sleep 4 in our  Pioneer Mitchell. We slide 2 single self inflating mattresses  on top of the main bed when  packing  up.

Go and hire a few different types of trailers - and see what you like / dont like before you throw down your large to find out it isnt what you though it was...

+1 50K ish is a lot of coin to throw down. I would give a few different types a try to see what you like. If the main thing you end up using it for is heading up or down the coast for a few weeks each year and a long weekend here or there staying in caravan parks, then you likely are better off with say a soft floor, or a caravan.
