Tent Ropes

My camper came with no ropes...

I would appreciate recommendations re rope material, length and grip type. 

Do you recommend springs or rubber bands?

What brand of trailer?

How many poles? How many loops on the tent? how many on awning?

I have many different types of ropes. some with rubber, most with springs, some with wooden grips, some with plastic grips and some with alloy grips. I don't favor any of them as they all do pretty much the same job. On the corner poles I use 1 rope that has 1 loop and 2 springs and grips. Just get more than required and different lengths as every camp set up is different and you may require longer ropes to avoid tree roots. They also are used as a clothes line.

I like white rope -  it's more visible at night so you're less likely to trip over a guyline

Make your own up, just need to buy springs from camping shop, usually have a bit of wood around for the grips.

Hi guys. Thanks for the info so far.

It's a kanga trailer. Only two poles on the main tent and an extra four on the front awning.

I have made some up with the white "silver" rope and plastic grips but I think they are a little short.

A copy and paste from an earlier post of mine ....
We use home made up tent ropes with hard plastic tensioners , you can buy the bits of Fleabay .. We also  use a rubber  O'ring type of bungy . reason being in high wind the springs will pull up till they go solid and it can either help pull the pegs out of the ground or tear or break / bend something else ..
Ive used  O'rings for 10 years without a breakage,  they allow the wind to move things around without damaging things because of the " give "in them .
Dad used to use car tyre inner tubes cut into bands on our caravan annex back in the sixties to eighties and with stood many a bad storm other annexes didnt .
You should be able to get them from  a place that has concrete pipes plumbing supplies or fleabay  for about $2 + ea [  O- ring concrete pipe seals ]  .. aprox 150mm diameter and 12 mm thick.

based on this advice, i went looking for these bigger sized o-rings a while ago, but the cheapest i found locally was $12 each!

if you happen to find a suitable location to buy these for a couple of bucks each, let me know... because i think it's a great idea too... :)

maybe a group buy?

We have 4 poles on the awning, we use 2 ropes on the end poles, if it's windy we put an extra rope on the centre pole.

what size rope are people using?

Im looking at buying a roll of rope and length of dowel if it isn't too expensive, or maybe a length of square instead

Edit: Unless GG has some dowel or small square layin round :D :D :D

go to a plumbing supply shop or pvc pipe manufacture or supplier eg. Iplex, and they come from 50mm up to 200mm +      ask for rubber ring joiner for pressure rrj pvc pipe 150mm if they ask what class pvc just say class 12  or you can get 'O' ring cord by the meter from sealing solutions, aliance sealing, cbc bearings etc they may even do a 150 - 200mm x  8mm 'O' ring for a couple of dollars

tried that... more than a couple of bucks... :(

o-ring cord i haven't looked at... best way to join the ends?

I am sure I can find something lying about, chamfer a couple of edges and drill some holes. Will get back to you
