What about something like this...rated to 500amps...anyone know the maxium amps a winch draws under load?

I think between 400 - 500 amps.

The only failure to speak of is corroaded connection points and wires that stopped the controller from working the winch, after reconnecting the controller direct to the power/solenode, we had it working and this got me out of trouble.

I have an X9 Superwinch, it's aprox 8 to 10yrs old maybe more, mine only has a 2.5HP motor, I bought it second hand in 05.

Did a solenoid winching out of the4 Wenlock on this years Cape York trip. Not happy but them's the breaks.

What brand winch Steve and Viv, and was it the original solenoid setup?

The winch was a TJM OX. 4 years old and they used a two solenoid set up. There was no sign before I went away that it was *dicky* so how do you know. Anyway, it's replaced now with a sealed unit - single solenoid type, cost $189 in Weipa. I'm happy with the Winch Motor etc, that has gone well but now I know I would have had the solenoid changed.

So as some one went into the gate the winch would wind in killing the main battery and twisting the winch, bullbar and fairlead and burning the winch motor out.

I have a 5 year old Aldi winch & it came with an isolator as standard. I also leave mine in the disengaged mode so this "remote control problem" is no issue. Mine has a wireless remote which I find great around the property for getting timber out of hard to get places. I can walk beside a log I'm winching, controlling the speed & also using a crow bar to guide the log around trees, rocks etc. This is the main reason I bought the winch although I have used it for a recovery or two. I reckon it's seen 12-15 hours actual winching time. No failures so far. (I shouldn't have said that should I ;D)
