Yes 30 minutes is not enough for such a great event .

Did you see last year's winner is in a Hummer .....

One of the cars making its debut at the Dakar will be the Mini ALL4 Racing by the X-Raid team. They are entering five of these new rally cars which feature a 315-hp, 3.0-liter diesel engine. The all-wheel drive ALL4 is based on the new Mini Countryman.

The mini debuted last year but was written off doing promo work on the rest day. I see VW have pulled out for this year which might make things interesting for the rest. I still don't think Hummer will be up the front even with Nassar at the wheel.
That link about Geoff Olholm was from last years event.

The link about Geoff is from last year, the local news interviewed him last week though just before flying out for this years race.
Lost when I meant local I meant local to me here in North Qld, I should have been more specific I think.

Just reading through the starters list... 6 aussie riders and only 1 aussie driver from what I can see.
Unfortunately someone has already died. Not good. I wonder if it was the crash that caused his heart attack or if his heart attack caused his crash?

Quote
French racer Sebastien Coue was found unconscious over the Nihuil dunes in a severe state of hyperthermia while riding his motorcycle on the third day of the Dakar Rally.

Paramedics conducted a search for the driver lasted several hours. Once found, he was immediately taken to Schestakow Hospital.

The health centre’s director, Armando Dauverné said that Coue arrived “with a critical state of hyperthermia,” with his body temperature over 40°C.

He added that he still doesn’t know for how long the racer was lying unconscious in the sun.

It's sad that Bruce Garland could not do it this year (health reasons) I wish they could have put Craig Lowndes in his Isuzu D.Max, he would have given them a run for his money  ;D

On the Toyota, why do they have to go to another manufacturer for a motor? Garland just uses the old Isuzu motor and does a few mods and gets 190 KWs and 620 NMs out of his rig.

"borrowed" from another forum   http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?p=17652822 (http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?p=17652822)

The quick version...

In the past years, some of the quads were complete proto-tytpes (special one of chassis, A-arms suspension, different motors etc.), The class was more or less an "open" formula... as long as it had 4 ATV type wheels, a set of handlebars, and you sat astride it... you were in.

Then - as official bodies are prone - the ASO decided to "limit" the reg's to a more production based formula... presumeably for parity of competition and budgetary reasons... Okay, so they changed the rule book and all the european competitors turned up to "preliminary scrutineering" at LeHavre, France on November (prior to everything shipped to South America on the ASO boat).

apparently at this point, the officials (under advice of some competitors) find out there are a few loopholes and anomalies in the rules... so no worries; re-write some rules etc.

Everyone gets to tech/administration in Mar del plata... and suddenly there are some bikes that don't meet the rules (many quads came from sth america and other places where they were not present at the "pre-scrutineering" in LeHavre,

Apparently there were several riders/team that were without homologation/Identification papers from the manufacturers, which confirm the production origins of their bikes etc. so in a last minute fail-safe, the ASO created a "non-homologated" category, for those that did not comply... in order for them to participate. One of these was in fact multiple Dakar (and Safari) Quad winner Macachek (spelling?). The catch here was that they would NOT be eligible for a placing in the gen classification... basically they were just there for the ride.

The entire quad group started the race (both the eligible and ineligible entries) under a question mark. There were protests made, meanwhile some "found" homoligation papers at the 13th hour... others resigned to running in the "non classified" group.

By the end of day two - having not being able to produce the documentation to satisfy elegibility... and faced with the prospect of just riding for practice for the next 10 days... Macachzek decided to withdraw... Most of the other quads (I understand) are continuing.

the biggest problem with the quad teams is there own inability to work together as a class, if that makes sense. but it looks like fun though, I do a 300k endro every year, (more like 200k  ;D ) and it dam near kills me.

I now read that it is out .
What a weird situation to withdraw .
Toyota driver Orlando Terranova's co-driver Andy Grider has quit the Dakar Rally in frustration after an argument on day four. Team Overdrive manager Jean-Marc Fortin confirmed the truth on Thursday, telling Dakar television that the duo had begun arguing on day four.
"They started seriously arguing yesterday," Fortin said.
"Andy Grider the co-driver decided to quit and not start this morning."
Argentinian Terranova is popular in his home nation and was seeded eighth for the 2012 event.
Under Dakar Rally rules co-drivers can not be replaced mid-race.

Also news just in ....
Heavy snowfall in a mountain pass has forced Dakar Rally organisers to abandon the sixth stage from Fiambala in Argentina's north to Copiapo in Chile.
The Dakar statement explains that advance vehicles were unable to cross the Andes into Chile overnight.
"Due to the bad weather continuing over the Andes Cordillera (rain and snow), the Chilean authorities were forced to close, for the night, the border at Paso de San Francisco, situated at 4700m," Dakar officials said in a statement.

And :
In the cars section, Geoff Olholm had clutch issues just one day after blowing both his original and spare turbo on stage four.
"Yesterday they blew a turbo - changed it - did another 40 km and blew the second one," the post said.
"They were at the bivouac only four hours. The boys did a great job on the car to get them started again but they started late. Due to their late stage start they started amongst the trucks which was fun!
"Today's stage was done with a slipping clutch so they nursed it through. Boys will need to change gear box and clutch before stage six."

spare wheel comes loose?? Someone will get an arse kick!

that hummer wont ever do well in the event I dont think

Quote
Qatar's defending champion Nasser al-Attiyah suffered another disastrous drive on Thursday's fifth stage of the Dakar Rally, losing more than 20 minutes after his Hummer overheated.

Poland's Krzysztof Holowczyc, in a Mini, won the stage between Chilecito and Fiambala ahead of American Robby Gordon, with Stephane Peterhansel coming in third to maintain his lead atop the overall standings.

Holowczyc finished the 153km special in 2hr 10min 51sec, 1:01 in front of Gordon, with Peterhansel, a six-time Dakar motorcycling champion and three-time car winner, at 3:52.

"It was so easy because of the rain in the evening yesterday and overnight the sand was not too soft and it was easy to drive," said Holowczyc.

"We decided to attack properly, though we went off the road and couldn't see the road at times. For sure, it was a good stage and we are back in the game."

Peterhansel added: "Fiambala is always a very difficult stage. This morning we started first, so opening the road was not good, but we took our time to navigate well.

"We never lost the track. Sometimes we lost a little time, but we never took the wrong turn. In the end, we didn't do the best time, but a decent time I think."

The Pole stands second behind Peterhansel in the overall standings at 4:18, but al-Attiyah's radiator woes, which hit when he was well set for a possible victory after notching up the best intermediate times on the stage, left him in eighth place, a huge 50:47 off the pace.

"The spare wheel was loose and it hit the engine water pipe, breaking it and after the temperature was very high, so we stopped to repair it again and lost a lot of time," he said.

"But what can I do? I was really having a good run. I was doing my maximum but I don't know what's wrong.

"My plan today was to take at least 10 minutes from everybody and that's what was happening because I was really fast until control point 2.

Cairns Coconut Resort Car Racing team driver Geoff Olholm has scored an impressive 24th-placed finish on stage 10 of the Dakar Rally in Chile despite stopping to aid other racers.
On the final stage before the Dakar Rally heads to Peru for the first time Olholm was able to demonstrate the pace of his X-Rabe Desert Warrior to score 24th, but it wasn't all plain sailing.

Olholm encountered an upside-down buggie during the stage and stopped to assist the crew. The driver and co-driver of the crashed car were unhurt, and Olholm was able to right the vehicle and tow it out of danger before resuming his rally.

A holed radiator hose and a slipping clutch prevented the Aussie from maintaining his pace for the entire stage, and a punctured tyre also held Olholm back.

Olholm moved to 58th overall after stage 10.

American Robby Gordon's hopes of winning took a major hit on Wednesday when stewards ruled he should be thrown out of the event because his Hummer's engine did not conform to race regulations.

It is believed the stewards noticed the problem with his engine in checking it over after the stage - during which his Hummer team-mate and defending champion Nasser Al-Attiyah was forced to retire after another technical problem.
The stewards believe Gordon's modifying of the ventilation system and tyre-reinflation system linked to his engine improved its performance level - he denies that his tinkering had an impact on improving its speed and is basing his appeal on that.

The practice of feeding air into the induction system using either the tyre inflation or ventilation system has been branded "redneck supercharging" by Dakar Rally Officials.

Seems Nasser Al-Attiyah and Robbie Gordon must have had a bit of a falling out after Nasser went out. I got the feeling he wasn't too happy with the car or the team. should do better next year if Citroen enters the Dakar.
Found this on the web

SA-Dakar Rally: Al Attiyah rumours - good WRC start instead of bad Dakar?

The "love" between the Qatari and Dakar title holder Nasser Al Attiyah and Robby Gordon seems to has gone - told different stories in the last camp before Peru. Al Attiyah, who had to withdrew from the Rally on Tuesday due to technical problems, said that he "would never race again with this car".

Yesterday the Dakar-organiser ASO reported about Gordon´s eventually disqualification because of eventual false or manipulated air-intakes. Gordon made a official protest, so he could finish the rally. What happened behind the scenes? A reason for Al Attiyah?

For Robby Gordon the situation is different. "The problem is not the Hummer's, but al-Attiyah's," he said to the news agengy DPA. He also told, that the Qatari had pushed the car too far - and had been waiting to leave the competition for days.

Other speculations are harder. 2012 Nasser Al Attiyah is to start in the WRC World Rally Championship as factory driver for Citroen - and the debut is the "Rally Monte Carlo" on January 18th.

"There is speculation that he was upset about missing the first stage of that event, in Monte Carlo, and that he only planned to stay in the Dakar Rally until the end if he had a chance to defend the title he won last year" the news agency DPA reported.

Two people were killed and seven others were injured in a head-on collision between a Dakar Rally support vehicle and a taxi near Peru's border with Chile, race organisers said on Thursday.

The incident happened at 9:30pm local time on Wednesday, 10km from the frontier, a statement on the race website dakar.com said.

One of two taxis hit the support vehicle head-on while a second cab overturned as its driver tried to avoid the collision.

Two people in the first taxi, including the driver, were killed and seven people, four of them Peruvian, were injured.

Three of the injured, who were travelling in a Land Rover support vehicle, were British members of the Race2Recovery team which is made up of British and US servicemen who have been severely injured and lost limbs in foreign conflicts.

A French motorbike rider competing in the Dakar Rally died on Friday after crashing into a Chilean police car, organisers reported.

France's Thomas Bourgin on KTM is pictured during the 2013 Dakar Rally departure ceremony in Lima on January 5, 2013. Bourgin died after crashing into a Chilean police car.

Thomas Bourgin, aged 25, was making his way to the start of the seventh stage when he hit the car, which was coming in the opposite direction on the link road to the start of Friday's stage in Calama.

An inquiry was launched into the precise circumstances of the incident which brings to three the number of deaths in this year's Dakar in the past 24 hours.

Bourgin, from Saint Etienne, was discovered dead at the scene.

"The rally's medical teams deployed on the ground were only able to certify the rider's death, probably instant," a statement on the race's official website reported.

Bourgin was in 68th place in the overall ranking of his first Dakar.

His demise follows that of two people killed in a head-on collision between a Dakar Rally support vehicle and a taxi near Peru's border with Chile on Thursday.

One of two taxis hit the support vehicle head-on while a second cab overturned as its driver tried to avoid the collision.

Two people in the first taxi, including the driver, were killed and seven people, four of them Peruvian, were injured.

The exact thing happened in the Wynns Safari the year I did it... European rider in a transport stage, he saw a car coming, and by instinct, went to the right side of the road as he would back home, and head on.. Luckily he wasnt killed, but didnt make it to the start of the competition...

How tough is this race, Bruce Garland got into the Cordoba bivouac at 7.00am this morning (their time) and will have to start again at 9.50am. They had to replace a turbo on the last stage and then do the nest of the stage in the dark.
You have to give it to them and Bruce is like 54 years old and broke his back last time there and then had a quadrutly heart bypass. Not a race for the faint hearted hey.

2014 DAKAR RALLY: GRABBO CHECKS IN
After crashing out of the 2014 Dakar Rally yesterday, Team KTM's Ben Grabham has reported in on the circumstances involved in his DNF ... and crikey, what a story:
“I'm a bit sore and sorry for myself as I started in 79th place yesterday and the dust was so bad that even though I was trying to take it easy I clipped a rock on top of a mountain and ended up going over a pretty big drop. The bike and I tumbled close to 100 metres down the mountain. I’m pretty sore all over but lucky not to have done worse. My head was knocked a bit silly for the day and the bike was not coming out of where it was without a chopper to lift it out. It took me an eight-hour taxi ride over the mountains to catch back up with the team. I didn't know where I was and neither did anyone else for about seven hours - and to make matters worse, no one around me could speak any English, my phone was flat and I was starting to think I was going to have to live there until I learned how to speak Spanish!”

And...  oops. heart breakin.. he was a front runner.

French rider Alain Duclos won his first Dakar Rally stage for eight years on Friday, but the gruelling event was overshadowed by the deaths of a competitor, a father of five, and two journalists.

Duclos, riding a Sherco, beat overall motorcycling section leader Marc Coma by 75 seconds after a 400km timed run from Tucuman to Salta in Argentina.

However, his celebrations were muted after it was revealed that the 9374km race, which crosses Argentina, Chile and Bolivia, had accounted for three more lives.

Belgian motorcyclist Eric Palante, 50, riding for the Honda team, died on Thursday's fifth stage between Chilecito and Tucuman.

Dakar organisers ASO issued a statement reporting that a support truck had discovered the father of five's lifeless body at 8.30am local time on Friday.

"No alert was received by the organisers. Eric had been replenished with water during the afternoon," the statement said.

Palante is the 23rd competitor in 36 editions to die in the Dakar Rally.

Meanwhile, two members of an Argentine news team also died Thursday when the car they were driving in fell into a ravine, the Super Rally magazine said.

"The dead are journalism student Agustin Mina, 20, and Daniel Ambrosio, 51, who loved auto racing," magazine manager Francisco Delgado told AFP.
Duclos's last win on the Dakar came in Bamako in Mali eight years ago when the event was still staged in Africa.

"Today, it was my type of terrain. We've got over the worst over the last few days and the rest day has arrived at the right time - it couldn't be better timed," he said.

Duclos is third overall after six stages, more than an hour behind former three-time champion Coma on a KTM.

Joan Barreda, on a Honda, was fourth on Friday but is second in the overall standings, 42min 17sec behind fellow Spaniard Coma.

In the cars, defending champion Stephane Peterhansel drove to victory on stage six.

Peterhansel, six-time champion in the motorcycle section and five-time winner on four wheels, finished 2min 43sec ahead of Qatar's 2011 champion Nasser Al-Attiyah and 5min 20sec in front of Argentina's Orlando Terranova.

Spain's Nani Roma, in another Mini, was sixth on the day and retained the overall lead.

AUSTRALIAN Toby Price has clocked up another top five finish on the eighth day of the Dakar Rally as the competitors tackle the event’s ‘marathon’ stages in Bolivia.

Price ended the motorcycle category’s seventh stage in fifth place, just under two minutes off the pace of stage winner Paulo Goncalves.

The stage marks the first part of the Dakar’s marathon stage, a two-day affair where competitors can’t be helped by their support crews at any point.

The opening 321 kilometre test took the bikes from Iquique in Chile across the Bolivian border towards Uyuni, around salt plains and up into mountainous ridges nearing 4,000 metres in altitude, along the stage the cars tackled on Sunday.

The cars, meanwhile, hit the second part of the marathon stage, a gruelling 784 kilometre route taking drivers across the high-altitude Salar de Uyuni salt flat, then back across the Pampa Del Tamarugal plains on their way back into Chile towards the sand dunes outside Iquique.

Dakar newcomer Yazeed Al Rajhi excelled to take his first Dakar stage win, backing up a second on the previous day to consolidate his third position overall, while Nasser Al-Attiyah finished third to maintain his lead of the event.

Stage 1 cancelled... due to rain??? how soft are these blokes...

Quote
The opening stage of the Dakar Rally in Argentina has been cancelled due to bad weather, a day after the prologue had to be abandoned when a car crashed into the crowd and injured eight spectators.

Race director Etienne Lavigne said helicopters needed to guarantee the safety of participants had been unable to fly due to thunderstorms that broke over the stage from Rosario to Villa Carlos Paz.

The competing cars, trucks, motorcycle and quad bikes were making their way to the end of the stage under controlled conditions.

The annual Dakar Rally, which started out as a gruelling endurance race from Paris across the Sahara to the Senegalese capital Dakar, has been held in South America since 2009 for security reasons.

This year's event starts and ends in Argentina with an incursion into Bolivia after Peru pulled out due to forecasts for the El Nino weather pattern that has caused flooding and landslides in the past.

The prologue had to be stopped when a Mini Cooper driven by China's Guo Meiling careered off the road at Arrecifes near Rosario and hit spectators, injuring eight including three children and a pregnant woman.

Four medical helicopters and eight local ambulances were deployed to take the injured to hospitals in the area.

A statement from the hospital in Arrecifes on Sunday said two people, a father and son, remained in critical condition.

Australian Toby Price leads the motorcycle category of the Dakar Rally after winning the second stage, a 354-kilometre run from Villa Carlos Paz and Termas de Rio Hondo in Argentina.

Price finished 20 seconds ahead of Portugal's Ruben Faria on his Husqvarna, while Slovakian KTM team-mate Stefan Svitko was third, 88 seconds behind.

The 28-year-old Price came third on last year's Dakar Rally where he clinched the 12th stage on his debut appearance. He now takes the overall lead by two seconds over Spaniard Joan Barreda Bort.

Because of heavy rain, the motorbike special was trimmed by almost a 100km, while the cars raced 387km instead of 510km.

The stage was won by nine-time rally world champion Sebastien Loeb, who completed the run in in 3:45:46.

The race is something of a leap in the dark for the 41-year-old Frenchman, who dominated the world rally championship during his long collaboration with Citroen.

He now leads overall from Peterhansel and Vasilyev.

One of the main issues was medical related....the race really relies on the ability of medical staff being able to access the racers should they need help, and with the big storms that hit that area, helicopters were grounded well away from where the race was. They were also apparently concerned that the stage was going through mountainous areas, and in the slippery conditions someone could easily have gone over the edge.

Plenty of riders going down and out of the event with broken bones of late, it would be interesting to read the full list of injuries sustained by everyone at the end of the race i reckon.

Reading on bloke I used to race withs website about it last year and how many went down after it started raining and turned to slime, while he towed his son to the finish line filling him in for a hunge klms or so LOL!

Then the heavens opened and half the people who’d come flying past us were laying upside down at the side of the track because they couldn’t ride mud. It was unreal and to be honest really, really funny.

But that quickly turned on us. As soon as Llel’s bike got wet it just died so we had quite a few Ks of towing through mud that you wouldn’t believe. Llel was awesome holding on to the tow. Basically a rally bike on desert tyres doesn’t grip too well in those conditions so you have to hook second gear and keep it pinned. I was just filling him in permantanly for kilometre after kilometre. The top layer of mud was so thick I have no idea how he held on. I would have given up long before!

I saw footage the other day of a truck hooking up to a single seater buggy to tow him...the truck took off before he could put his helmet on, was spraying him with dirt and rocks as he had no windshield in the thing, and dust so thick he couldn't see where he was going. This was in car footage from the buggy, scary Shit as the truck just put his pedal to the metal and he was pretty much trying to stay alive attached to the back of that thing  :o :o

50 degrees!!! **** that!

Toby Price is just two stages away from a historic Dakar Rally victory after extending his lead to more than 35 minutes in the overall motorcycle standings.

The Australian rider finished second on stage 11, just 18 seconds behind Frenchman Antoine Meo.

The strong ride in stifling heat allowed him to add a further 12 minutes to his overall margin over Stefan Svitko and he now leads the race by 35 minutes and 23 seconds.

"I can't smell victory yet, not yet," Price said.

"I won't smell victory until I cross the finishing line on the last day.

"We're another day closer, but for sure, it's been a hard one."

The 28-year-old from Singleton in NSW's Hunter region said he struggled to get airflow as the mercury soared in the last 50 to 80 kilometres.

"It's been hard on the bikes today. There's been a lot of hot weather," Price said.

"The bike is still going really well, there's no water leaking or anything.

"It still feels strong, so we're in a good spot."

With a commanding lead, Price said he would look to minimise risks as he hopes to cross the finish line in Rosario on Saturday as the first Australian to win the gruelling race in any category.

"We've made a bit of time on the overall second placed rider which is our main goal and hopefully the next two days we can take it a little bit easier," Price said.

Former race leader Paulo Goncalves crashed out of the rally after a fall early in the day.

Price, in his second Dakar, will now turn his attention to the 481-kilometre penultimate stage through semi-mountainous regions from San Juan to Villa Carlos Paz.

In the car division, Stephane Peterhansel leads by more than 50 minutes despite finishing fourth behind Qatar's Nasser Al-Attiyah on stage 11.

Sad to hear about that 60 something year old guy getting hit by one of the vehicles and dieing  :'(  Makes me wonder how those who were cleaned up on the first day are going also. Plenty of riders going down and out of the event with broken bones of late, it would be interesting to read the full list of injuries sustained by everyone at the end of the race i reckon.

The bike riders get smashed.  A friend of mine did Dakar on a KTM:
2013 - Broken Leg
2014 - Dislocated Knee
2015 - Finished 32nd
2016 - Didn't enter, but is thinking about 2017

The level of support they get is amazing. They have a tracking device that if your bike stops moving for a set amount of time sets of an alarm with the organisers. They then phone you to see if you are ok. Each bike has an emergency button, bit like an EPIRB.   When he broke his leg, a fellow rider stopped and hit the button. They had a medical chopper and doctor at his crash site in under 4 minutes from the button being pressed.

Fantastic result. Probably won't get the accolades he deserves by our media though ( or else they will all jump on the bandwagon ). Just read that he is a 4 time Finke winner too and Marc Coma is his mentor. Imagine having that legend giving you tips.

The buggies of Dutch brothers Tim and Tom Coronel were returned to the open class for Stage 2 after originally being made a late inclusion in the all-new UTV class.
The pair had dominated the first test, finishing 1-2 in their machines powered by 1350cc Suzuki Hayabusa engines - some 300cc above the UTV class limit originally nominated by the organisers.
Their pace on the opening test saw organisers then decide to return them to the car category in which they were originally entered for the remainder of the rally.

Reigning champion Toby Price is out of the Dakar Rally after suffering a broken leg in a motorcycle crash.

The Australian Red Bull racer fell off his motorcycle during the fourth stage and was airlifted to hospital before being diagnosed with a fractured left thigh bone.
The 29-year-old, who became the first Australian to win the two-week race in any category last year, headed into Thursday's (Friday AEDT) stage in fifth place overall.

Toby Price's father, John, said he is shattered by the news.
"He was doing really well," he said. "He had got himself to the front position and everything was sailing along nicely but unfortunately these things happen in the sport that he's in."

Mr Price said he spoke to Toby's manager earlier this morning about the extent of his injuries.

And to think in that video he is on an enduro bike training for hattah which requires no real navigation. For dakar he is on a factory rally bike and having to do all the navigation at the same time. Especially harder this year after the gps rules were changed to make the waypoints harder to find and navigate between them not as straight forward. So imagine riding at that pace over a track you have not been able to pre sight, and having to navigate using a scrolling paper waypoint map and a none too accurate gps. The guys that do this at pace are absolutely nuts.

watching them go down a straight doesn't look that impressive from the helicopter overhead shots, until they post up on screen the guys are doing 175 - 180kph  :o :o no wonder they get injured or even killed like they do in the race when they have an off

thus why they limited them to 450s... they were getting way too fast.
I think the final straw kicked in when the French team entered with FZR1000 engine in the bike... good for close to 300ks... and factory teams with 990s etc.

If you like Dakar and adventure riding, keep your eyes out for this

Fire up the BBQ and set aside 1 hour for 4 Saturday afternoons in mid January to early February 2017 to watch the 4 part mini series Beyond Siberia & Beyond Sahara; a documentary that follows 2 groups of bikers as they tackle some of the most remote riding destinations on earth.

7 Mate Viewing schedule

14th, 21st & 28th January at 3:30pm / 4th February Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide at 5pm and Perth at 3pm.

I second this. Mate of mine has entered 3 dakars and retired with broken bones twice, despite having several Southern African moto x and enduro championships under his belt.  He finally completed it in 2015 coming in 32nd. His description of the using the road book whilst at speed is nuts.

cancelled because a mudslide (10 metres high) cut the highway and killed 2 women and injured 5 other people, with 10000 people evacuated because of it also...legit reason to cancel I'd say

They seemed to show heaps about the Aussie whinging he couldn't have a beer, or how often local police were holding them up etc, where they could have concentrated more on the scenery on the ride IMHO. Hopefully the next episode is better.

http://www.enca.com/sport/biker-conquers-disability-finishes-dakar-rally

JOHANNESBURG - South Africa has a new unsung hero.

Joey Evans was paralysed from the waist down 10 years ago during a motorbike rally, but this year he competed in and completed the 2017 Dakar Rally.

The 41-year old had to learn how to walk again, and how to ride a bike.

Just as he was on his way to realising his dream he crashed again -- this time into a cow.

That did not deter Evans and after recovering from his injuries he continued racing, and finally qualified for the Dakar Rally.

Another challenge he faced was having to raise more than R1-million to compete in the most gruelling motorsport contest in the world.

Evans made it to Argentina, but before he reached the finish line he had another accident.

However, good fortune was on his side and he finished the Dakar in 93rd place out of 96 competitors.

Keeping an eye on the battle between the Peugot buggies and the Hilux's. Then dunes for the first couple of days will favour the buggies but then it will be a on watching the Hilux's chase down the time they lost on the first couple of days.

Only up to day two and already some big crashes!

A spinal injury has forced reigning motorcycle class winner Sam Sunderland out of the event, while Yamaha claimed a 1-2 on the stage that put France’s Adrien Van Beveren into the lead.

Toby Price lost 13 minutes on the Yamaha rider but now sits sixth overall, just 10 minutes adrift, after his five minute penalty was rescinded by officials.

In the car category, Peugeot’s Sebastien Loeb raced to his first stage win of 2018 but the day was a disaster for Toyota, with chief challenger Nasser Al-Attiyah losing almost an hour.

AKAR Rally organisers have decided to cancel Stage 9 of the event on safety grounds.

The ninth stage of the event was set to comprise a 755km trek from Tupiza in Bolivia to Salta in Argentina, including a 242km competitive section.

Heavy rains have impacted the rally since it arrived in Bolivia late last week, with the weather turning areas of the overnight bivouac at Tupiza to mud.

It is great to see the cars are still trying even if the gaps are quite big. All going at it for bragging rights I reckon.

The Peugeot's seem to have the measure of the Toyota's. The Hilux boys are getting the odd stage win but just can quite keep it together.

I notice the Peugeot with their 37" tyres that it is quite an open pattern, more like a mud terrain, as opposed to the 4WD vehicles which is more an AT pattern. Don't know why, just stating my observation.

With a couple of Aussies on the bikes and and one in a Holden Ute in the cars it will be fantastic to watch.

not sure why they arent in a buggy class. Be fascinating to see how pretty much production cars with shocks, tyres and a cage in them would go. Same in the aussie safari or what ever it is called these days.

The T2 category is the closest there is to a production model. This is usually dominated by the Toyota Landcruiser.

The Holden ute is in the T1 catagory which is a highly modified class for pure desert racing machines.

Toby Price remains fifth overall but has lost more than 10 minutes to the lead after the KTM rider was one of several to get lost.

Price was nearly 20 minutes down on stage leader and eventual winner Xavier de Soultrait at Waypoint 5 and while he made inroads on the Frenchman, he couldn’t find any more time relative to the man who now leads the event, Pablo Quintanilla.

However, can anyone remember the the  late 80's early 90's when the Pajero "beasts" (nothing like the market Pajeros) were flying across the north African deserts?
I remember sitting in awe at the( then) Pajero development vehicles outrunning the helicopters with ridiculous speeds and "floating from dune to dune" at insane speeds.
If anyone has a link to a video or similar from that time can you PLEEEEASE  post it up!
I'm sure many would love to see the old magic period again  :D ;D.

The same cars came out for the as it was then - Wynns Safari the year I was there... We saw one roll over and 2 people roll it back on wheels, fired straight up - and pissed off in a hurry up in OB Qld!... like modern Dakar rigs - nothing to do with the showroom cars. :) they also had a different sound to them compared to all other Paj's that year.

Youtube would have footage...

Just came across this on another site.

Hi all Aussie Holden Ute followers. It is with regret that the battlers from down under have withdrawn from Dakar 2019! Early in the competitive stage today, Steve and Trev nosed the car over a sand dune which has resulted in Steve being airlifted to Lima, and Trev although sore, is in good spirits considering the impact. When we know more we will keep you all up to date. Thanks for all your support and well wishes! Cheers from the Team!

In the drivers defense the spectator was in an unauthorized area and it was the back wheel of the truck which contacted the spectator. With the rough terrain the driver wouldn't have even noticed it.

Could have done with alittle less pressure in his Nikes, bigger footprint and he might have gotten out of his deer in headlights induced bog. ;D

Well the 2019 Dakar has been run and won by no other than Toby Price  :cup:. A fantastic effort with a badly injured wrist.

Of the 6 Australians competing, 4 made it to the end.

To put it in context, he didnt win any stages except the last day, just super consistent riding each stage, with that fractured wrist. Just an amazing effort.

You can actually get something very close to the spec of Toby's bike and also the Toyota.

The Toyota can be had from Overdrive Racing in Europe as they build them under licence  for Toyota South Africa who actually design them.

I knew the bike was reasonably easy to put together.

I was having a dig at Rumpig for claiming bragging rights on the badge that happened to be stuck on the front of the winners car.

But yes, for €220,000.00 you can buy a well used buggy made of pretty much no Toyota parts except for the badge on the bonnet. ;D

I find myself wondering whether Toby Price might have been forced to go fast, but conservatively, taking as few risks as possible due to the pain in his wrist. His innate talent and a conservative mindset might have been what got him through.
The bloke behind him busted a gut to catch up the one minute or so in the final leg that Price had and came a cropper in the process. Food for thought about consistency Vs outright speed.

There is some rule that the engine has to be production based from the manufacture of the vehicle. Not sure which Toyota has a 5 litre V8 in it?

Some of the bigger Lexus's (so Toyota-ish) have a 5L V8. Not really relevant to the ute, but since when that mattered in motorsport.

Australia's endurance motorcycle racing world-beater Toby Price will begin his campaign to win a second consecutive and third overall Dakar Rally crown on Sunday.

Price, 32, famously won last year's iconic event off a less than ideal preparation when he broke his wrist in the lead-up to the race, which was hosted in South American nation Peru.

The Queenslander suffered tremendous pain during the already arduous race but remarkably won the gruelling event.

This year's race is being held in Saudi Arabia for the first time and will run from January 5-17 across 7856 kilometres, starting in the capital Jeddah, then heading south to Wadi Al-Dawasir before finishing in Qiddiya, an entertainment and tourist "mega-project" that only started being built in early 2019.

Paulo Gonçalves, racing on motorbike no. 8, has passed away from a fall sustained 276 kilometres into today's special. The organisers received an alert at 10:08 and dispatched a medical helicopter that reached the biker at 10:16 and found him unconscious after going into cardiac arrest. Following resuscitation efforts in situ, the competitor was taken by helicopter to Layla Hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead.

40-year-old Paulo Gonçalves was taking part in his 13th Dakar. He made his debut in 2006 and had finished four times in the top 10, including an impressive performance as runner-up to Marc Coma in 2015. Paulo Gonçalves, the 2013 cross-country rallies world champion, was sitting in 46th place overall after stage 6 of the 2020 Dakar.

The entire Dakar caravan would like to extend its sincere condolences to his friends and family.

Yesterday’s stage was starting well, great pace and feeling good on the bike until the refuel.

Paulo took off into the stage about 5 minutes before me and the worst case had happened. I come over a small crest and seen a rider down and was Paulo.

Worst fears kicked in cause I knew this one was serious. I called for help ASAP and helped get him on his side (plus more serious checks). Tried calling for more help and by this stage @stefansvitko (also a champion) had arrived and helping where he could.

The first helicopter arrive and @luc_alphand_skiator was starting to help and as the medical helicopter arrive they were already on CPR and the doctors got to our sides and work all they could.

Helping holding drip bags, getting bags of medical equipment and guiding other riders around a bad scene. We all worked as long as we could but there was nothing we could do (pic 2). I helped assist carrying him to the helicopter as it was the right thing to do. I was first at his side and wanted to be the last to leave.

We will miss you’re smile and laughter in the bivouac #speedy

My last 250km of special stage was tough, I’m dehydrated from tears.

At the moment I’m not even worried about the result, I couldn’t care.

Many thoughts with family and friends on this day, we don’t start the rally day 8 for bike #8 in respect to family and friends and the loss of a HERO..

Thankyou to everyone for the messages of support worldwide, especially Portugal with all the kind things. We are human and this is nothing but just a race, I would give up all my wins to have any of my fellow racing mates back with us.

Toby is a champion.

He has pretty much given up this years win by stopping to help Paulo. With 2 rounds to go I can not see him pegging back the time lost.

It would be one of the greatest comebacks of all time if he can. I tip him to come back and get 2nd place.

The time Toby lost while assisting with Paulo was given back to him so the time he is behind Ricky is what he has lost while actually racing.

Nope next day stage 8 was cancelled.

When riders stop and hit the panic button, they are given time back from that point to a point they move again give or take with some other stuff involved....

but yea, awesome work by Price to stay by, and amazing he kept going after knowing Paulo had died.

I like Alonso's crash

Massive chnges to next years race for the bikes.

https://www.mcnews.com.au/dakar-2021-route-details/ (https://www.mcnews.com.au/dakar-2021-route-details/)

As the race enters uncharted territory, the measures taken in 2020 to put the focus on navigation will continue their natural progression. Road books will now be handed out in the morning right before the start of each special. Some categories will have digital road books.

Furthermore, the rules have been amended to slow down the vehicles and, in general, to make the race safer. Certain hazardous sections will be categorised as “slow zones” where the speed limit will be set at 90 km/h. Air-bag vests will now be mandatory and subject to inspection by race officials during technical scrutineering. Motorcycle competitors will only be allowed six tyres for the duration of the event.

Its been up and down all the way.. day 2 with contaminated fuel - which put some other contenders out.. Locally supplied fuel, jerry cans had water in em... some bikes just stopped... wouldnt run.

Yesterday Saunders took a great second! Price dropped to 8th..

Today Price back up 4th Sanders to 13th - brilliant effort.  Burgess 38th and Houlihan in 63rd but both still going :)

The new tyre limitation rules are working???

Price 1s off overall lead and Sanders finishes fifth with Burgess now 38th overall, while Houlihan claimed 60th.
Not a bad effort!

You would have to question safety from the organisors......

Riders have to wear a safety vest but organisors are happy to send them out with defective tyres.

I get they are trying to bring the leaders back to the pack......

The riders were complaining but gave in and went for it... looking at thaat tyre there, end of 1 days riding - you'd be a miracle worker to get another 700 day (today/tomorrow 700+) out of that

actually trying to slow the speed down - I can think of safer easier ways.

Toby airlifted to hospital....
KTM rider Toby Price has been airlifted to hospital after crashing out of the 2021 Dakar Rally.

The Australian, who was running second in the overall Bikes standings, crashed at the 155-kilometre point of Tuesday's ninth stage.

According to Dakar officials he is now being transported to hospital in Tabuk for further assessment of head, right wrist and left shoulder injuries.

The extent of those injuries is currently unknown, however organisers have confirmed he was conscious throughout on-the-scene treatment.

Sanders into 6th :)
Burgess up to 26th
Houlihan 52nd

Stage Nine saw Toby Price exit the 2021 Dakar Rally after a nasty crash witnessed him airlifted out, ending his efforts with a broken collarbone and injured hand and shoulder, for which he’ll need surgery.

Toby Price – DNF

“Well, I’ve finally broken my 30th bone! Crashed out in Stage Nine yesterday, I don’t remember much but I’ve got a pretty sore collarbone, shoulder and hand and will need surgery for that… Disappointed to not make the finish and let down the KTM Factory Racing team and my sponsors but that’s racing unfortunately this time around. Thank you Sam Sunderland and Ricky Brabec Racing for stopping to help me, I was off with the fairies that day but I heard you took good care of me!”

Stage Ten would claim another victim, this time with Monster Energy Honda Team’s Jose Ignacio Cornejo completing the stage after a crash at km 252 and managing to limp back to the line, losing 10-minutes, only to undergo a medical examination which saw him left with no option but to withdraw from the Rally. His retirement comes while holding the overall lead. With his withdrawal he’s been removed from the day’s timesheets, despite completing the stage.

José Ignacio Cornejo – DNF

“I’ve failed in my mission. Today I had a very heavy fall that left me unconscious for a few minutes, I was able to get back onto the bike, but very slowly and with the bike all bent up. I made the stage 10 finish-line, but for safety reasons I have to get such a heavy blow to the head checked out properly. I feel like I’ve been hit by a train. I have nothing left to do but thank my team, my family, my trainers and all the fans for their tremendous support and encouragement. We were so close to the big dream… it will remain unfinished business.”

Victory on the day went to Ricky Brabec, who had headed out from second position this morning, opening the track for much of the day. The American was looking far more at ease on terrain well-suited to his style and reached the end of the special three minutes ahead of team-mate Joan Barreda.

The future of Dakar Rally has been cast into doubt after French prosecutors revealed they had launched a terrorism investigation after a support vehicle exploded in Jeddah on the eve of the event's start.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-05/explosion-probe-rocks-dakar-rally-toby-price-second/100738640 (https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-01-05/explosion-probe-rocks-dakar-rally-toby-price-second/100738640)

Meanwhile, as the third stage of the rally was run in Saudi Arabia, Australia's two-time Dakar Rally motorbike champion Toby Price finished in second place.

This edged him up the overall standings to 14th, 26 minutes behind British race leader Sam Sunderland.

Victoria's Daniel Sanders said he rode a tactical race in finishing fifth on Tuesday, taking him to fifth in the standings, just under 9 minutes behind the leader, which includes a 10-minute penalty picked up on stage 2.

But it was Joaquim Rodrigues of Portugal who took the motorbike stage for his first Dakar win. Rodrigues dedicated his racing to brother-in-law Paulo Goncalves, who died on the 2020 Dakar.

Aussie motorcyclist Toby Price has Dakar Rally stage win stripped after speeding violation

Off-road motorcycle star Price, who won the bikes class at the celebrated endurance race in both 2016 and 2019, thought he had picked up the 14th Dakar stage win of his career after a demanding 346km loop around the Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh on Thursday.

However, while he finished four minutes ahead of his competitors after taking the lead at the penultimate checkpoint, hours after the race his win was ruled out as he was hit with a six-minute penalty.

Officials ruled that the 34-year-old Gold Coast rider had exceeded the speed limit set for the race in certain public sections of the rally.

Red Bull Factory KTM rider Price, whose chances of a third overall victory evaporated after a bad start earlier in the two-week race, was thus relegated to fifth place overall on the stage, with victory awarded instead to Danilo Petrucci.

The Italian is the first MotoGP rider ever to win a stage at the Dakar.

From memory - it came to a head few years ago when one french team turned up with a FZR1000 based XTZ - detuned to 900... thing was capable of well over 250k's...
thus the organizers realised Shit was going to get bad as things were getting too fast on bikes... 250k's off one of them dunes, you'd hit the space station...
... so the 450 limit came in.. then they got fast... so computerized speed limits...

Harsh way to end your rally -  not even in a competitive state :(

Stage 7 proved a tough one with 701 km to be covered between Riyadh and Al Dawadaimi with a 402 km timed special. Australia’s Daniel Sanders didn’t however arrive at the special start, with a crash before reaching it leaving the Aussie in hospital.

Unfortunately for Daniel Sanders the 2022 Dakar Rally is now over following a fall from his GASGAS RC 450F during today’s opening liaison, which resulted in a fractured left elbow and wrist.

With two stage wins to his name at this year’s event – a competition the jovial Australian has unquestionably stamped his mark on – Dakar 2022 was shaping up to be a super successful rally for the Aussie. Lying third in the provisional standings at the time of the incident, Daniel will remain in hospital overnight tonight while undergoing ongoing medical checks, ahead of expected surgery on his elbow tomorrow.

After his win on day 10, Toby Price had the unenviable task of opening the penultimate and extremely tough Stage 11 of the 2022 Dakar Rally. The stage win had left him sitting sixth overall, with a 28 min gap to the overall lead, however today’s stage only saw that gap widen, almost doubling.

Stage 11 featured the loop to the Bisha bivouac, featuring a total of 346 kilometres of timed section out of the 501-kilometre total stage with 155 kilometres of liaison sections.

An issue early on where a waypoint didn’t validate correctly for the Australian put him on the back foot for the rest of the special. However, using his skill and speed, the twice Dakar Champion was able to regroup and keep pushing through the arduous terrain.

Ultimately completing the stage in 28th, Toby now lies 10th in the overall standings with one day left to race.

Britain's Sunderland wins Dakar Rally motorbike title for second time

Despite running second on the stage, Sunderland did enough to maintain his advantage to the finish, dropping just 3m25s to stage winner Quintanilla to beat the Chilean by 3m27s in the final standings.

It marks Sunderland's second triumph on the Dakar, adding to his 2017 success, and a first in the event's Saudi Arabian era for the KTM group - ending a run of two wins for Honda.

Matthias Walkner completed the overall podium for KTM behind Quintanilla, 7m43s down on Sunderland.

Dubai-based Briton Sunderland had controlled the 2022 edition of the Dakar most of the way, first seizing the advantage on Stage 2 and holding a small lead over the chasing pack into the rest day.

A difficult Stage 7 dropped Sunderland down the order, but he soon fought back to win Stage 8 and take back the top spot. He was briefly usurped by Adrien van Beveren after Stage 10, but a close second on the penultimate stage proved to be the decisive blow in the fight for overall honours.

Van Beveren, who slipped 15 minutes behind Sunderland on Stage 11, cemented fourth overall for Yamaha, while Joan Barreda rounded out the top five on the second of the factory Hondas.

Another Honda rider, Ricky Brabec, was sixth overall after missing out on the final stage win of the rally by just five seconds to Quintanilla, while Jose Ignacio Cornejo ensured all four of Honda's works riders finished in the top seven.

The remainder of the top 10 likewise remained unchanged after Stage 11, with Andrew Short (Yamaha) taking eighth ahead of top rookie Mason Klein (KTM) and two-time event winner Toby Price (KTM).

Toby Price – P2

“So, so close. Yeah, a great job from Kevin, he did really well today. I knew it was going to be tight, and of course I pushed right from the start all through the stage. I just missed three waypoints by virtually meters, and it dropped me back. Obviously, the goal is to win, and it’s frustrating to miss out by such a narrow margin. But I’m fit, healthy, and I’m going home with a trophy, so that’s the most important thing. I’m ready for another one next year.”

Daniel Sanders – P7

“It was going to be difficult today to make up any time but I did what I could and just missed out on the stage win, but overall, I’m super happy. It’s been a long road to get here. After crashing here last year I’ve had six operations, which really limited my preparation, so it’s been great to bounce back and be competitive. It’s been an unreal experience and hopefully next year I can come in stronger and fitter and be more ready to go. The team has been amazing as always and I’m super happy to be here at the finish line in one piece.”
