Title: AFL 2019...
Post by: Bird on November 21, 2018, 07:56:31 AM
120 days until round 1...

Prediction
We will get the spoon after a non existent trade period not Delisting 35 spuds.

FFS, Dud Thomas was in our top 5 in best and fairest....

Top 8 in no order
Eagles
Swans as usual
Hawks
Cats
Crows
Tigers
Wobblers
Maybe Demons or Great Waste of Space

Spoon - Blues

I reckon the swans and hawks will drop out this year the blue baggers won't finish with the spoon I don't reckon with Docherty back and a a more experienced forward in McGovern with curnow and McKay  at the other end we should win a few more games this year I hope hahahaha.

Carlton co-captain Sam Docherty has re-torn his anterior cruciate ligament and will undergo a second knee reconstruction.
Docherty missed all of the 2018 season after having a knee reconstruction in November last year and the new injury is to the same knee. He will miss another full season of football.

Do ya reckon this year you could try to keep this a bit upbeat and positive instead of the routine negative anti-everyone and every club blurb that is written every year in the AFL thread?
Not too much to ask. Remember its easy to bag players umps clubs commentators etc, anyone can do that.
Personally I'm looking forward to the season, moaning about ineptness can wait til at least round 2 😁

Bird, you would have to heartened with the blues effort last night, young side still looking to gel, I thought there were some good signs for the future.
They didn't drop their heads which would have been easy to do after the first quarter but they fought back, just ran out of legs in the last quarter.

I gave up watching most of way through 1st 1/4... then saw 35 points to 1.

The future.. what was the saying the other year "Were coming" or something, they got last...
They have been saying that for few years now-  its about time they did something.

then seeing Boltons interview afterwards - my confidence in bottom 3 at best was heightened :( I really had high hopes and wanted him as coach - but I really wonder if Ratten would come back - he had us heading in the right direection :(

Eddie is slowly taking up the reins of the village idiot Sam Newman.. Sam was good at one stage but I think fame and possibly brain trauma (only explanation I can think of1) saw him belittle himself and others in the name of fame.
Melbourne was also an abysmal team on the Saturday night....

cecily's push and shove.... thats a free kick ???
That was no different to 30,000 other push and shove over weekend... some even in the same game shown on highlights!!!!!! I think Moons said it best - stupid rule, get rid of it.
As for the center square one - I still am no wiser at all...

shoulda played better- without doubt, but imagine a grand final result being changed by one of those 2 free kicks... teh city would be burnt down.

Seriously - the front on contact one was dodgy, but is that open handed push and shove - is that really a free kick in the goal square or anywhere?
Is that how soft this game has become? Honestly?

I have no issue with booing during the game but to boo a bloke who’s being awarded the Anzac medal for clearly being the best player on the ground is a disgrace. I don’t go for either team but seeing the Essendon supporters boo like that during a presentation is pathetic.

Time and place for booing. Anzac day during an Anzac medal presentation is poor form.

I wonder what Jobe Watson thought of the booing.....

Was during play caused by a couple of pathetic umpiring decisions late in the game and it spilled over into the medal presentation, was disappointing that it did, but if the AFL want to stop booing then they need to do something about the quality of the umpires, they are so full of their own self importance I think they believe we go to the games to watch them, no excuse tho it was poor form by the Bombers fans and yes I am a Bombers supporter and no I didn't boo during the presentation but did at the crap umpiring decisions during the game, wasn't much better when we walked across the road to the Storm/Warriors game but at least we won that one, just, still there was some very poor decisions in that game too.

I reckon players make a 100 times more mistakes in a game than a umpire.....oh that’s right umpires (as they are called in AFL) are humans as well.

Never said anything about them making mistakes, it's the piss poor decision making process after they have made a mistake. Making mistakes, or which team makes the least amount of mistakes is part of what we go to see, isn't it, in any sport

I don't barrack for either of yesterdays teams but I will say that was the poorest exhibition of umpiring seen this year. The number of plainly wrong decisions and non decisions was staggering. If this was meant to be a " premier" game on the AFL calendar it was let down by the umpiring.
The worst decision made by the AFL was miking the umpires, they need to umpire and not coach, if they tell a player to move back, tell them once and then penalise the the player if they don't comply.
A good game is generally when you don't notice the umpires.

Razor Ray sure loves the sound of his own voice.
Yep, that's it in a nutshell Pottsy.
Still went to two great footy games on the one day, one of my team's just lost and one of them just won, saw two great tributes to our diggers,  I'm happy

I reckon players make a 100 times more mistakes in a game than a umpire.....oh that’s right umpires (as they are called in AFL) are humans as well.

few more players than umpires. Shit decisions cost games - in any 'sport'... I don't give 2 Shits about either team from last nights game, but listening to it on the radio -when all teh players stop playing as they know a free kick should have been paid, and its not - there is something extremely wrong with the umpires.

The commentators were nearly having strokes "Surely this time its a free kick" but alas no... They were pissing themselves laughing at the level of umpiring - something is very wrong.

Shame that everyone is talking about the umpiring and booing (as if booing is anything new) - and not ANZAC day itself and the amazing spectacle that it was

Spot on Bird, the Anzac tribute was great, but well and truly  over before the booing started.

Do I detect a very tiny amount of sympathy for the Bombers, hahahaha, duck for cover macca

How about a plain and simple football theme weekend and forget the BS.

I’m with you, happy for one game over a weekend to be dedicated to a cause....but all game and every team across the weekend does drags on.

Good thing I only have free to air.....otherwise I’d be sucked into watching every game

Especially the ANZAC commemorations. ANZAC Day was last Thursday. Fine with the Bombers/Pies ceremony and carry on on but, today, I will sit down to watch the Eagles/Cats match and the same rubbish will be rolled out.
It is 4 days past ANZAC Day for gawd's sake. The rum and milk has been drunk, 2 up played and the hangover is gone but the AFL insists we must continue to have the false ceremonies foisted on us.

No problems, just shows how difficult it can be to make a quick interpretation. Has Jack been cited?
Will be interested in the match review boards decision.

a massive fine (about 10 mins work or 1 phone interview)  and challenging it and lost

Richmond key forward Jack Riewoldt says he is disappointed the tribunal didn’t clear his name on Tuesday night, following a controversial tackle on Bayley Fritsch on Anzac Day Eve.

The three-time Coleman medallist was fined $1000 for a dangerous tackle on the Melbourne young gun, which was increased to $1500 after the tribunal didn’t overturn the fine.

Riewoldt, 30, is expected to miss the next six to eight weeks after he injured his PCL in the win over the Demons, compounding a frustrating start to the season where he missed three games with a wrist injury.

So apparently your footy show has been axed...

Quote
The show famously finished with co-host Neroli Meadows signing off with the phrase “see you next week”.
According to reports they found out just minutes later that the show had been terminated.
“That is an execution,” Lyon told SEN Breakfast on Friday.
“The Footy Show went to air last night, Neroli (Meadows) farewelled and said, ‘thanks for watching, see you next week’.
“Then an hour later, out comes the press release, bang, The Footy Show’s gone.”

Thirty years ago the MCG would have been a quiet place by quarter time on a Saturday arvo I reckon. Most of the crowd seemed to have an opinion on the umpire's sexuality, the marital status of their parents, where they should keep their whistle, the state of their vision etc. I am sure they only stopped wearing white because of the comparisons made about them to the larval stage of a blowfly. Anyway all that aside, Neale Daniher has to get Australian of the Year this time. Geez I hope he gets some recognition while he is still with us. The only consideration I suspect might be the workload the recipients endure after they receive that award. In hindsight he probably could have handled it before this but since he is well into borrowed time now it might be too much.

Love the line "Are we at a fairy cake contest"
Yes Im afraid thats what its become. Dont watch AFL anymore, haven't for years.
The next change for the AFL is doing away with the grand final and handing out participation certificates so they dont offend anyone.

Trouble is the AFL are saying they are not trying to change the behaviour.  It looks like the security companies and cops are going on their own power trips.  Who the F%$# employs a Behavioural Awareness officer.
Give it another year and there will be no more beer or pies.  Just cup cakes, lemonade and you will only be allowed to clap your favourite team as they run around in their tutus..

If the AFL are to ge believed, i'd then assume the sports grounds are covering thier backsides from future lawsuits of patrons that claim they weren't provided a safe place to watch the game at, and are the ones hiring them.

I think they are after a theater type crowd... long white gloves, soft tinkering clapping, top hats and tails... no talking let alone swearing...
"well done chaps" kind of cheering *MAYBE* allowed under permit.

i dont know how they can keep saying "nothing has changed" and keep a straight face.

That is indeed a well written article Bird. One, I think many long time followers will concur with. I can still remember as a 10-12 year old kid going to Victoria Park and selling 4 n 20 pies from a wooden box!  I no longer have the same appetite for AFL as I once had. The bullShit rule changes, extra teams, corporate greed and now behavioural attendants is just too much. The game is losing flavour and the spineless people who now dictate the game have no real passion for the game.  Once again greed is ruining a great Aussie experience.

Just been talking with a work colleague and he can remember going to the footy in Melbourne and all the blokes carried a slab in with them and stood on said slab while slowly working their way through the grog.

A while ago there were two sides in the comp that I umpire that were getting beaten by 50 goals every week by everyone else in the comp. One folded, changed its name joined a new league and won a flag a year later (says something about the quality of that comp lol) the other stuck it out and has won a couple of flags and gone up a division  since (currently sitting in the four in div 1)

I'm guessing the first option for ardroma of changing names and leagues is a bit hard in a country town so looks like they will just have to stick it out and hope things turn around lol. Poor buggers from stanhope would have leather poisoning.

haha, I'm a Docker, so West Aussie, but I also barracked for Collingwood . Cannot believe I would ever say that but the WCE fans over here have been giving me sh!t lately.
After the game I gave 'em both barrels.
Then, a day later, me dear old Dockers went down (nothing new there) so I copped it back.

Apparently the team was made up mainly of the seconds, who went down by 200 in their own game first.. They then played the seniors game, and only had 12 players in the last 1/4...
Lots of country clubs are struggling to field teams these days :(
They lost every round by 100 points or more so far.. Few rounds ago 50.27-327 to 0.0-0 and 36.16-232 to 4.2-26... Hats off to the boys for still turning up, I don't think I would. great club spirit been going since 1800's....

edit: few other games in same comp
Lismore Derrinallum 38.22-250  FINAL 4.5-29 Caramut
Glenthompson Dunkeld 38.16-244  FINAL 4.6-30 Moyston Willaura
Hawkesdale Macarthur  2.9-21 FINAL 19.18-132 Penshurst

seems like 250 isnt an abnormal score in the league.

That was my first thought.  That would be tough walking off the field after that.  Also tough for all the club volunteers and committee.
Obviously GW showed them no mercy in the 2nd half, by kicking 55 more goals....

Yeah.  Even Great Western went into recession only a few years ago.  Obviously found a wealthy benefactor....
Suburban clubs in the older areas are suffering too.

at first I thought that was a low act to be honest.. theres times to flog a team... They could have called it off at 3/4 time when they only has 12 players left who'd already played a game.

.. but when most teams in the comp are constantly being obliterated, % would come in to it at the end of season - as I said before, 250 isnt uncommon!!
The comp looks like a joke really - 8 teams with 3 "TEAMS" - and 5 others making up the comp with no chance of scoring let alone winning.

There was a good episode on Australian Story few years ago where rural clubs had been enemies for 80 years were merging,  I mean real punchups everytime they met, which in smaller competitions was 4-5 times a year Lol!  Then few years later, after they had all merged, that complete regional league was forced into merging.

Cricket and Footy and other clubs are the life blood in many rural communities... where everyone can go and just get along

Fantastic to see Roughy,s last match.  Must admit I got a little emotional because he was a brilliant player and a very modest man.  Probably one of the best weekends of football I,ve seen in many years.  Hawks wont be in the finals this year but have a great showing on the horizon for 2020.  Still think the finals should only be the top 4 or 5 teams.

Won't change as it's all about making sure there's no cheap flag as the ultimate Premier must beat the other 3 in the top 4 or else any smoky coming through that can beat them. Dogs are the only team to beat the odds since the modern 8 format and perhaps the end of season rest week facilitated that upset.

People forget that if the Dogs had won their last H&A game against Freo, they would have finished 3rd. It was a pretty tightly packed final 8....

agree
I'd say final 5 as it used to be is the best Why reward average teams with a 'lucky draw' in the run home... Far better to reward those teams who are consistent throughout the whole year.

Minor prem's get week off
2 v 4 and 3 v 5 elim style etc.

But it wont ever happen.. the TV overlords who own the game would love a final 18 team final series... more TV, more adverts, more suckers with foxtel...  They are promised X amount of games and finals per season...  Less finals = less revenue for them, which personally I dont care about

That's the way it goes if there's a tight bunch at the top but speaking of Freo Port are doomed to lose this weekend however the other results pan out  ::)

So the Pies have given themselves a crack at Top4 leaving The Eagles everything to play for against the Hawks to take 4th back off them but then the Crows have to beat the Dogs by not much for Port to beat the Dockers by more to take the 8th spot and the Dockers just sacked their coach? This could be bloody painful if it pans out that Port's last game is the chance to grab 8th spot and we get spanked at home by the Dockers playing for next year's contracts  :-[

My fear exactly, not to many teams who change coaches lose their first game. Port will need to be switched on right from the start, too many times we have given 5 and 6 goal starts to the opposition and then chased all day.

I thought with the Dogs winning that would see the end of the Hawks, Crows and Port but it seems not so as Port can still toss out Essendon with a win. Won't make much difference with a trip to Perth and the Eagles you wouldn't think so better to get earlier draft picks if you're making up the numbers. Still while you're alive the dream lives I suppose. Port from 8th place  :cup:

Wow 18.4 to 8.17 that's some scoreboard pressure the Lions put on the Tiges. Thanks for the practice session.

Why on earth AFL players lining up for a set shot goal from anywhere in their kickable range don't look at the goals and allowing for the wind make a judgement call like a golfer and pick out a spectator or notable point in the grandstand and then completely ignore the frigging posts and drill that point only I'll never know. Oh I'm not far away so I think I'll steer this one through running to the side and hooking it through off the instep. WTF!

If you don't get it then pick the damn spectator and then face away with your back to them 180 degrees. Then you can spin around and run straight at them and drill them like you do on the field without thinking you dumb klutz and if you picked right the ball won't have time to deviate and guess what? You pick wrong bad luck but you can work on that so long as the swing is the same as you don't have to be anywhere near the pin just in line with it dummy. You're instinctive jocks not cogitating perfessors for chrissakes!

Week 2 Toyota AFL Finals Series
Friday, September 13

First semi-final
Geelong v West Coast at the MCG, 7.50pm AEST
Saturday, September 14

Second semi-final
Brisbane v Greater Western Sydney at the Gabba, 7.25pm AEST
Week 3 Toyota AFL Finals Series
Friday, September 20
Youd think West Coast will walk that, but the second game, AFL wont be sure who to have win, they certainly want their newbys from Shitney to win, but brissy I'd say need to make a final so not to lose fans.
I'd like to see Brissy win that one.

Quote
Second preliminary final
Richmond v Geelong or West Coast at the MCG, 7.50pm AEST
Saturday, September 21

First preliminary final
Collingwood v Brisbane or Greater Western Sydney at the MCG, start time TBC

But it doesnt matter - the AFL's $$$$ making dream of Richmond and Wobblers will be what they want to happen.

WTF was Rioli thinking?

Not the smartest move that could make.

But how did he do it, even for a workplace test I'm watched to make sure I couldn't substitute anything

I read yesterday that, yes, they are watched as they are giving the sample. However, if they observe any cheating or substitution of samples, or tampering with samples, they are not allowed to intervene, but instead just  submit it in the report!
ASADA then acts on what is in the report.

Ahh yes.
Seems somewhat counter productive but I suppose rules are rules.
I just figure it'd be better for them to stop him there and then and make him do it again.

Greene offered another week.... Why do they bother with the charade?

His record.

Total: 17 charges
Suspensions: Six matches
Fines: $26,350

2012: Made ineligible for the NAB AFL Rising Star after he was suspended for one match for an ugly bump on Brisbane veteran Jed Adcock.

2012: Fined $1200 for his role in a melee during Greater Western Sydney's clash with Melbourne.

2013: Cops a $1950 fine for making reckless contact with an umpire in a game against Gold Coast.

2014: Was fortunate to walk away with a one-match suspension for striking Adelaide midfielder Richard Douglas, with the offence classified as a level-three sanction.

2014: Fined another $1200 for engaging in a melee, this time against the Western Bulldogs.

2015: Hit with a $1500 fine for spitting in the direction of Richmond midfielder Anthony Miles.

2015: Another year, another $1500 fine for engaging in a melee, this time against Fremantle.

2016: Fined $1000 for misconduct, having pushed Port Adelaide youngster Brendon Ah Chee into a fence.

2017: Hit with a $1000 misconduct fine in the pre-season, having given Sam Wright a slap to the face late in the game.

2017: Fined $1000 for striking Port Adelaide midfielder Dan Houston, with the charge graded as low impact to the head.

2017: Hit with a two-match striking suspension after clipping Western Bulldogs midfielder Caleb Daniel with an extremely late spoil attempt.

2017: Forced to serve another two-match suspension after striking Richmond defender Alex Rance to the jaw with a jumper-punch.

2017: Controversially offered a $1500 misconduct fine for his 'Jackie Chan' kick to the face of Western Bulldogs forward Luke Dahlhaus.

2018: Fined $2500 for misconduct, having appeared to drop his knee into Sydney midfielder Isaac Heeney during their elimination final.

2018: Fined another $2500 for misconduct the very next week during a semi-final against Collingwood, where he was involved in a back-and-forth with midfielder Taylor Adams.

2019: Slapped with a $2000 fine for striking, having handed Melbourne midfielder Clayton Oliver a tummy tap in an off-the-ball incident.

2019: Handed a $7500 fine for serious misconduct, having appeared to make contact with the face and hair of Western Bulldogs star Marcus Bontempelli during a lengthy scuffle.

Greene offered another week

It's a preliminary final.  GWS will successfully challenge and have it down graded to a fine.

the Perth newspaper, The West Australian, devoted most of its front page today  to a readers poll saying Rioli should be let off lightly for his initial transgression.

The headline? Free Willie.

It was the latest in a run of sympathetic stories about Rioli.

The fact that Nat Fyfe won the Brownlow was given secondary status on the front page, emphasising the general feeling that the paper is biased against Fremantle.

I would love to have been a fly on the wall this morning when the editors found out their hero had been pinged again.

On a daily basis the West Australian newspaper has a mouthful of feathers from kissing the eagles arse.  A very low standard of journalism is forced upon us as the alternative is electronic.

Greene probably wants to gouge his own eyes out when he looks at the scoreboard.

2.7 (19) is the lowest three-quarter time grand final score since 1960.

The way GWS drop elbows, massage face and eyes etc they remind me of the Western Bulldogs in the late eighties.

The Western Bulldogs were Footscray in the late eighties, so obviously not them.........

I hope the Tigers run away with it and absolutely flog em.

Job done....

Well 3rd played 6th and it would seem with the very close lead ups GWS only had a quarter of footy left in them but you have to feel a bit for the ones that didn't make it to the Granny with Mad Mondays beforehand-
https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/ladder
Geelong, Brisbane, Collingwood and West Coast all looking forward to next season no doubt but at least GWS got to run out there on the big day.
The rest week for all has certainly changed the GF format it seems.

Richmond fans loved it I guess.
Make no mistake, I love footy but I went to shops at half time.
Will be interesting to see tv ratings.

Toby Greenes father arrested over alleged female police officer assault.

I actually feel sorry for Greene on this one.  From what I've heard, his old man is a violent piece of work.  Toby hasn't spoken to him in years after a tough upbringing.

they gave GWS plenty over the years to get them to a flag winning position and they failed, maybe it's just the AFL moving on so that the Suns can have a crack.  ;D
