If we are able to make this trip (we will make a final decision early next year) then we would be happy to take a group out to Old Andado Station. It is truly an amazing place and worth the drive out if you have already gone to the trouble of going all the way out to Mt Dare Hotel for a look.

There is a camp ground at the station which would be worth staying at overnight because by the time you drove along the Binns tracks to Old Andado, looked at Molly Clarkes homestead and then perhaps had a look at Mac Clarke reserve it would be too much to drive back to Mt Dare or Dalhousie in the one day IMHO.

The camping at the station is quite good actually. Its only dirt of course but there are flushing loo's and a shower/hot water set up and even some little rooms for accommodation if you like. Its all on an honesty system as well as taking any extra donations for looking through the homestead.

Check it out, I highly recommend it.........I also highly recommend having a look at the Pioneering Womens Museum in Alice for those that may head up that way. It ties the whole Molly Clarke experience in together and you get the full extent of this amazing lady.
And if that wasnt enough, if you ever stay at the Macdonnel Range Big 4 caravan park and you are lucky enough to be there on a night that Barry Skipsey does one of his photo and singing shows, you will get even more of an insight into Molly Clarke. Barry took quite a few of the pics you see on the Old Andado website.

Im starting to turn into a bloody historian!! Thats what travelling this great country is all about though I think. To learn about its great history :)

We will be going but due to selling our campa trailer and purchasing a caravan (sorry gone to the dark side) we will be parking it at birdsville so will meet the group there if thats ok with everyone. we have recently became grey nomads hence the caravan purchase.
Old Andado station is definitely worth a visit as we stayed there this year. they also have dongas for rent if your sick of camping lol

Im also considering this trip, is the return still happening as I am looking at being in Alice about that time and would be interested in doing the Simpson West to East.

Trevor,

I have heard some rumblings of people that might be crossing back west to east after the trip is over.  For many people I think it is all a matter of time. after we cross then people will generally break off into smaller groups and head off to various other destinations.

I have loosely planned to visit the rock and head home through Alice springs, but the Mrs keeps changing her mind so i may come back through west to east as its the quickest way home. If I am only out there for 2-3weeks.

Races will be on at B/Ville so will just play it by ear, I think most people are still undecided on their exact plans before and after the trip dates but as we get closer I think people including myself will lock things in. So others can also plan and decide .

Glad to have you on board :cup:

Thanks, but after wifey realised the Races were on she has put her food down with a firm hand and said she doesnt want to be anywhere near Birdsville then, so we would look at the East to West trip in the dates identified.

Hi Alan
We arrived at Birdsville during the day and the following is what we did apart from refuelling. Checked out the museum, bakery, the pub,the old police courthouse, had a chat with the local copper(ex vic police) and bought a book about Tom Kruse. Im sure there are a few other things in and around the area. But one day is enough IMO
you could also arrange to do the tour at 2 boys dreaming site (ask at info centre for Don's contact number, he's a local elder that does a free guided tour of sorts there, though you need atleast 4 people from memory), go up in a plane and see The Simpson from the air, check out the bore for the water supply in town, go see the Burke and Wills Tree (yes there's one at Birdsville also), check out the race track, cross the old Diamantina bridge and even go see the dingo caves aswell, not to mention having a sunset drinks and nibbles or bbq on top of Big Red.
we spent 3 nights in Birdsville last year (we did arrive at sunset one night though), was a great change from spending just the one night there after a run across the desert  8)

Hi all.
Jo and I would just like to confirm that we will be coming along.  i have been a bit distracted over the last several months and have not had time to catch up on the chatter.  It seems that the base plane is in place and it looks good to us.  We will be using a well kitted out 105 Cruiser for the trip and have a rooftop for accommodation. Since this was first started our situation had hanged somewhat and it may be that we have to join the main group along the track.  We will keep you posted. After reading the posts there seems to be nothing that we have to prepay/ book before we leave.  if i have missed something could someone let me know.

I would be keen on the Chambers Piller side trip but where we go after the event is unclear at this time.

It looks like it is shaping up to be a great adventure and we are looking forward to it.
We are currently working on Moreton Island in Qld so if there are others in the Brisbane area that are attending the gathering perhaps we could have a get together before the start date.

Cheers and beers

Just having a good look at the itinerary again and my 'wife' and I may meet everyone to do phase 2 of the trip....the actual crossing. We haven't got together to confirm this but time constraints (work commitments) may limit us that few extra days prior.
If we have extra days id prefer to spend them on the other side showing her...him old andando station and surrounds.
But we will confirm this over the next week or so.
