Rememberance Day

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."

Lest we forget....or do we remember only too well ?

A small stastictic.....USA sent over 1 million horses and 200 returned !! Australia sent over 320,000 and figures are non existent on how many returned....

But the human toll was just as bad !!

We remember....but do we REALLY remember ??

I was going to say only a handful of horses came back. Wikipedia says one. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waler_horse

I read somewhere that the Waler Horses were left in the middle east for the locals to use as Farm animals.
Some sort of reparations agreement or something.
I don't think too many lasted too long as working animals.

I always thought the horses weren’t returned due to quarantine
Here for a good time, not a long time!

Probably right about the Quarantine, but they weren't destroyed either as I understand.
Just left with the locals.

Cost would have been the main reason. Depending how many there were they would easily fill a ship. Plus the feed and water, and then when they got back here, quarantine and then what to do with an oversupply of horses.
I've even heard they ended up eventually making it to the dinner plate.

Well folks I stood at my local memorial with hand on heart facing the Australian flag at half mast in silence remembering the fallen and those that fought the war to end all wars. A tear was shed, not only for those that did not return but for all that endured those terrible years. Those left at home to wonder if a loved one would return, the nurses, engineers, home front personal, and the innocent, elderly, children, and animals who had no control of their destiny .

As the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11month fell, there stood a solitary figure, while the rest just rushed by thinking of themselves.

I will never forget.
