New Enduo dirt bike
« on: November 03, 2017, 06:49:48 PM »
The wife has given the approval to spend $10,000 on a Enduo bike as I have always wanted to ride to Birdsville.

I would like to buy new so I can start from a clean slate.

The two bikes I am looking at is the old school DR650 $8200 on road, or

KXL650 at $8300 on road. That allows me a little bit left over.

The intent is to travel light and stay in basic accommodation or cheap motels.

I'll be riding from Toowoomba to Birdsville and back.

I like the fell of the DR and the simplicity, the KXL has a lot of unecessory plastic fitted, but it also has the bigger tank. The DR will require the fitment of a bigger tank at $500 (MX store).

So that will leave me just over a grand for some Dunlop D606 tyres and some saddle bags.

I prefer the DR, but I am open to other thoughts.

Has anybody got involved in long distance riding?

Ive been involved with dirtbikes all my life.

The closest I have come to one of those big tanks is a KTM690R  ;D Id buy the DR...tried and proven a million times over. Plenty of after market gear at the right price and plenty of online advice if you need it.
Thats not to say the Kwaka hasnt got all those things but the DR will serve you well.

And even though yes the 606's are a very popular tyre for the 'charlie boorman group', there are plenty of tyres out there that will also do the job that may not cost quite as much.
Not a virus, not a re-install, not a format, not an issue since 2011..once you go mac you never go back

I think the DR is the better one, also.  ;D

The only issue these days is rego is as much as a car :(

DR or KLR would serve you well - but they are anything but an enduro bike LOL!

check out http://advrider.com .. plenty of inmates there with good stories on both, things that go wrong, what to look for..

Not much difference in the engines, both are good.  But I also vote for the Suzzie.  As you mentioned, less plastic to break and you will drop it off road.  Although Toowoomba to Birdsville could be done on a road bike with decent tyres.  Rode with a mate who did.

DR's are adventure/touring bikes..
http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/suzuki-dr650-build-transformation-to-an-adventure-bike.712386/

The WR listed in Wazza's article is more of an enduro bike.. designed for competition - usually an MX bike with lights...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enduro_motorcycle

The DR isn't a race bike - but a fukin damn good bike that has barely changed since the 650 came out (it doesn't need to) with a massive following.. :)

heres an 8000 page thread on DR's

My other hobby  ;D - http://farriders.com.au/about.php , although this is road riding, not off-road. The KLR is a weapon of choice for quite a few of our members, not so much the DR. Perhaps that's because they are a bit more ergonomically suited to big days in the saddle ? The DR is a more than capable bike and they do seem to last forever. I dont think you would go too far wrong with either, it will come down to which one you prefer to sit on for long periods, and which one will take the the least work to get it set up how you want. There is a mountain of information on the FarRiders forum about all facets of long distance riding, but it may not be visible to non-members - http://farriders.com/forum15/index.php

Cheers, Spada

I've got an '11 DR650 and a mate has a similar aged KLR. I had my heart set on the KLR before I bought my DR until I rode the DR and KLR back to back. DR felt (to me) to be the nicer bike and had more grunt then the KLR. Now my DR is modded in the carb and pipe department and goes way better than a stocko. I could make it go harder but it's just a commuter. So my mate road it and loved it and asked if we do something similar for his KLR. So we did some research and did carb and pipe on his. The KLR now has a bit of grunt. But riding them back to back with the mods done the DR still feels faster. Put them side by side in a drag race (controlled conditions of course and certainly not on the road that leads to work) they are neck and neck. To say I was surprised was an understatement.
There is an endless list of mods and parts to make the DR just right. My carb and GSXR pipe mods follow this to a tee.

Watch the whole series for some great info.

I've done quite a few SS2000's (2000k in 24h) that would have qualified, but I cant be bothered with the paperwork to get an IBA number. Up until a year or two ago, FarRiders were the Austrailian representation of the IBA, but IBA have now started up in Aus as their own entity, so a lot of our ride catogories (which are now the Aus specific IBA rides) have had to be redone so as not to clash. I love to do the rides, but don't feel the need to document them. With the FarRides, I only ever register for the FR10's or FR1200's (1000k or 1200k in 24h), as they don't require a ride log to qualify, but It's not unusual to do 3000+k's over a weekend for the lunchtime meet-up's.
Couple of the bigger ones I've done were Brisbane/Renmark/Brisbane - left Brisbane midday Friday and got home 6am Sunday and Brisbane/Ross(Tasmania)/Brisbane - left Brisbane Thursday 2pm, had lunch at Ross on Saturday, and got back home in Brisbane around 1am Monday morning. That ride was logistically the most challanging because I had to manage not missing the boat, but had to still achieve the 1000k minimum in the 24h prior to the lunchtime check-in. I only had 15 minutes to spare when I got to the boat in Melbourne - https://spotwalla.com/embed.php?id=d1ef55540e56a66fc&scale=on&zoom=default&refresh=no

I had a DR650 for about 6 years and it was a very reliable and solid bike. They are a bit heavy for true off road but ok on trails etc. I did a few simple mods such as opening up the airbox and larger jets in the carbi as well as changing to a smaller front sprocket as the gearing is quite tall in stock form. The DR400 is a bit more off road orientated and quite a few DR650 riders switched to the lighter water cooled DRZ400, however for long range touring the 650 is probably the better choice.

I had a KLR650 for around 8 years, a great bike that did everything I wanted of it, certainly a better bike than I was a rider.
I spent a bit on mine by beefing up the suspension (newer models are a big improvement over old I'm told), crash bars and making some hard luggage for it (not recommended, it is secure, but hurts when it hits you).

Dunlop 606's, were my tyre of choice, I tried a few others but always came back to the 606. Not the best on road, but gave me confidence on the dirt and wore reasonably well. Down side is they are a bit noisy. As for expensive, I was getting them for around $160 (Topgun Yamaha in central Ipswich) a set and fitting them myself, so hardly breaking the bank.

So, DR v KLR?
Both do the job, the DR is a bit more dirt orientated and air cooled. KLR is water cooled, so a crushed radiator will leave you stuck and a set of crash bars is around the same price as a radiator.
KLR stator puts out more power, so can cope with heated grips, lights, GPS and phone charging easier if you are into your electronics.
Neither is a rocket ship, but the DR might be a bit better as its carrying a bit less weight, but the KLR has a better fairing.
KLR has a bigger tank, but a 5L fuel can adds flexibility and costs bugger all. Safari also do a massive tank for both if the budget extends so far (on the KLR, with the big tank protects the radiator as a bonus and eliminates the need for crash bars, which is good as they won't fit anyway).
Some KLR's used oil from new at high RPM when cruising, ballancer shaft tensioner spring losing tension/ failure (the dohickey) DR's had output shaft failures.

Both have a a lot of after market stuff available to make them into the adventure tourer you want and will do the job easily. There are shedloads out there doing it everyday.

Toss a coin, spend some coin soft luggage, sorting the suspension to better suit your weight and the load and then hit the road.

And since you are in Qld; if you don't carry a pilion and don't intend to, chuck the rear foot pegs in the shed and look at getting single seat rego on the bike.
Single seat:$315
Two seat: $485

I'd get a second hand bike that's had the extras already on it. plenty of people buy these do a trip and sell.

I always thought the DR and KLR were the same bike and Suzuki and Kawasaki did as a joint venture?

in any case even a new bike I would go over every nut bolt and bearing before the trip.

Last dr I had was the Dakar. I had some great trips on it. For the style of riding you are looking at I would recommend riding a dr and a vstrom back to back. You won’t buy the dr. Times have changed.

Keep an eye on Vince Strang Motorcycles in Inverell, it's not too far from Toowoomba, and Vince is one of the gurus for DR650s and the DRZ400E now.

They sometimes have some bikes that come through as a part-ex with low KM's on, and already well set up.
