Fridge keeps switching off
« on: February 03, 2011, 04:40:09 PM »
Hi All,

I have an Waeco CF50 frodge/freezer which until recently worked perfectly.

The problem is, When i plug in/switch on it works perfectly well, then just switches off after a good few hours. All i need to do is un plug it and plug back in and away she goes for another good few hours, then off again and so on.

I thought about it getting too hot, maybe, but it is in the back of the car and there is plenty of space for air flow.

I got rid of the cig lighter connection and replaced it with a merrit plug to aid better connection.

Any ideas as to the problem?

Thanks,

Baz

Had similar problems, replaced Waeco power cable end with an Anderson plug connected to 6mm cable from the battery (both - &+), fuse at the battery, and all has been good for the past 4 years.

I have a similar problem.  Could just be that your battery is getting on a bit.  Has it had a couple of deep discharges or is it just getting a bit old?  Plug it into a 240v charger and when full, unplug the charger and see if the random switching off still happens.  For me, it goes a few days without the issue when it's had a recent charge on 240v.  To eliminate heat as a potential issue, try running it on mains while it's still sitting in the car on a hot day.

Certainly power can be the issue. Have you set the automatic cut out to high instead of low? Do you have any error lights when it stops. over heating is 5 flashes and power is one flash. What temp is it set at? Have you been off road lately and then did it start to happen. The temp sender can come loose and give false readings but that usually results in it never switching off.

Is the wiring to the back of your R51 up to do the job?
I mean is it thick enough?

Hi Baz,

Could be the 'Poly-Fuse' in the fridge.  They can go high resistance and the fridge stops working (thinks voltage is too low).

About $50 to replace I think unless you can do it yourself.

Hi All,

Thanks for your knowledge.

To answer a few questions:

garbage: The battery is a 110A thumper only about 1 year old with good size cable to the rear of the car (Has been working fautlessly for the past two years).

Have pluged it into the 240v now, see how long it goes for.

Steveandviv: How do i change the automatic cut out temp? No flashing lights at all. The battery has plenty of power  because if i plug it back in, it goes for another 8 or so hours without the car running?

Buff: Be careful what you say, or i will get the resistance to hand you over to Herr Flick ;D ;D ;D

P.S

Now have a patrol Gu 4 (Dual battery in the engine bay), sold the R51 through poor reliability, (Clutch and head gasket within 45k) just got to update the pic.

So the 240v test went without a hitch. 2 days no problem.

Moved it back into the car, so far with 2 days and not driving anywhere (set to -2) still working quite happily.

Conclusion:

Must have been hot. It was in the car all day locked in Sydney when the temp was in the mid 30's, so hotter in the car?

i run my little waeco in my car all day every day.. it sits outside in the sun and gets quite warm inside.

i used ot have this problem in my old truck, before replacing the power connection with a engel style plug - much better conneciton now and no issues with the fridge turning itself off.

On the fridge you should have a *set* button. Mine does as does my Waeco 60.

Press it three times and then use the + & - to change the cut out between L - M - H.

on my waeco (60 liter) there is a switch near the power in socket on the fridge. 3 settings, low, med, high. i always run it on low.

also, i leave the Mode in normal - opposed to emergency.

Good point, depends on the age.. My 60 in two-three years old and doesn't have that switch any more (uses the digital panel) as does my 50 Dal Zone
