After some help....I've been looking and its doing my head in a bit so I am hoping the brains trust can narrow my options down a bit for me....
I 'had' a Hema HN7. The second one that i've had....and it didn't last our last trip (McGirr Kimberly)....the same issue with the first..the power jack eventually rattles loose from the mother board....I'm not going through all of the trouble with Hema again.
Now the problem I have, is that I had set up a reversing camera with a 3.5 mm video jack to plug into the Hema and take a video feed from the camera for reversing.
SO...after suggestions on something to use, in the car, for the sole purpose of running Hema Maps and Wikicamps etc.....trip apps............AND.....being able ot take a video feed via cable.......AND...is not hard to get fittings (eg..windscreen mount etc).?
So any suggestions to narrow me down would be appreciated..

Can that take a reversing camera video feed eg RCA via adaptor Lloyd? I have the same issue and am looking at my options. Thanks.

I got the 8" tablet recently but haven't loaded any travelling/camp apps on it as yet.
What do you have loaded apps wise on yours Lloyd and how is it held while travelling?

Looks like someone needs to make a wi-fi dongle/Bluetooth adaptor with a 3.5mm input.
Just like/similar to the ones that plug into USB ports.
If they already do, then a source needs to be found.

I’ve tried a few wifi reverse cameras and the quality was pretty poor. If anyone knows a good one I’d be interested.

Check out the range at Safetydave, I now have a cable one as a rear view camera wired in to the ignition.
Very usable quality.

I have a cheap hard wired reversing camera mounted in the top right corner of the windscreen. It stays on all the time but has a switch to turn it off at night. With a lifted vehicle and double spares on the back and can't see a smallish car behind me in the traffic without it.

Thanks Keith. I have one of those too. I was wondering if anyone had successully connected a tablet to a reversing camera so you could have both Hema maps and the reversing camera on the one #creen similar to how the Hema hn7 works. The wifi reversing cameras seem to use a a very low resolution so they aren’t very good. At this stage I might have to stick with two screens, one for reversing camera and one for maps. Many thanks

After going through 2 different units using Oziexplorer, I put a Kenwood head unit in with Android Auto. This is the new version of mine.(superceeded) http://www.kenwood.com/au/car/visual_navigation/ddx9018dabs/
It is awesome.
It runs reverse camera and caravan camera.
Hands free navigation, phone, messaging, music etc, etc via Android Auto.
Dont need a tablet for offroad mapping, I use my Android phone via mirrorlink. It is fully interactive (menu, zoom, select etc etc via the Kenwood head units touch screen).
You can run Wikicamps or anything you want via mirror link.
I run Locus maps for off road mapping and it is the best.
Heres why I say that.
It costs around $12 and you can load it on 2 devices for that price.
Excellent glitch free operation.
Easy to use app. Menu is simple even for me.
Offline navigation available via free app add on.

Big online world wide support forum.
You get 3 maps for that price (which is 3 states). Maps are very detailed. Buying extra maps is very cheap. There are android forums where you can get maps for free.

The feature that Ive come to love the most (beside working so well) is its link to Google Drive. I use Google Earth alot on my PC to find, plan and mark camp sites, overnight stays etc. I upload everything to Google Drive and then download it Locus Maps. Done in seconds. You can also upload from Locus to Google Drive. I edit and add on my tablets big screen and then transfer to my phone via google drive. Leave way points on Google Drive and everything is backed up if anything goes pear shaped on your phone.
You can easily edit your unloaded waypoint icons, names etc individually or in groups.
Once you try it you will be sold.

The head unit while not the cheapest option is as simple as you will get with all the features you want plus more. Not mounting an extra unit, no shiny things in view for prying eyes to steal. Is Hema THAT good?
Dont dismiss it out of hand until you demo it.
Find a dealer who has a unit on display.

dunno what your budget is, but HEMA teamed up with Alpine a while back and were releasing a combined head unit sometime later this year...no idea if it's hit the market yet or not though.

The reasons I am focusing on the simple requirements are ....
- My car is an older 4WD and hence doesnt have anywhere head unit....i would have to find somewhere to mount it....
- and just prior to this last trip, put a new radio setup in the car, that has many of the features that comes with the unit you suggest...it just doesnt have a display......
So the only thing I really need is the display for Hema/Maps and reversing camera...so I am hoping to get something cheap just to cover those needs as the other extras are catered for...rather than paying extra for something that will double up on stuff I already have.
Hope that makes more sense.

I see your dilemma Mark.
What about a roof console type drop down video monitor screen. They are reasonably cheap.
Not sure about makes and models, but they would have AV inputs for your cameras.
If one could take a connection or bluetooth from a mobile device you could run your apps on a cheap tablet or your phone, and your cameras via the AV inputs.

Had a roof mounted drop down screen in a Truck I used to drive for work.
It was more a computer screen than just a screen, and worked off a computer/control box in the rear of the cab.
Included GPS tracking, and vehicle logging.
It had several video inputs, that were shown on the screen. And capability of changing, from all at once, to just one.
It was a commercially installed set up, so no idea of cost now.
Surely there's a similar unit out there, nowadays. Even if it's made in Asia.

Yeah..it is a thought..the hassle with Wifi cameras is that they seem to have lower quality than wired (i use the camera to back onto the hitch)...and I already have a camera.....but it may end up being the way I have to go if I cant find a way to connect a cable video feed into a tablet.

I believe you can use an IPad for maps, unsure if it's able to connect to a reverse camera though

I am keen to go this way, but I am just trying to find a way to bring my reversing camera into it as well......I cant find any units that will take a direct 3.5mm video input, and I am also having trouble finding ways to have a converter from 3.5mm to something a tablet will take.....and bluetooth etc are all useless as you want it coming on whenever you put it in reverse and not having to go through a connection process first everytime you put it into reverse....
I'm finding this one very hard to solve at the moment..... ;D ;D

No experience of it.
I have a different wireless reverse camera hooked up on my camper trailer, sending to android head unit in the car. The picture is ok, but gets interference pretty readily. I have it set up to be switchable on the head unit so I can see behind me on the road. Works well for that purpose and for reversing the trailer (to check clearance only).
