Hi From Sydney
« on: March 06, 2014, 05:11:19 AM »
Hi from a long time reader on this forum.
As a long time tent based camper, I joined the forum for ideas on new areas to visit, as well as ideas for car based camping.
With 3 young children, we are quickly outgrowing our tent, and car for camping trips.
Having read the many of the positive experiences on here, we are planning to make the move from a tent to camper trailer.
My wife is sold on Jayco style of poptop campers, but I am more in favour of a soft floor camper trailer.
With the ideas on this forum, and visits to various camping shows, hopefully we can make an informed decision in the next year or 2.

Regards Richard.

Welcome Richard and family. Great to have you on board.
Best advice is either buy or rent a basic 2nd hand camper trailer and get out and try it more than once or talk to as many people who own different styles as possible.
You soon find out what you like and don't, what works, what doesn't for your family style. Also very important to make sure swmbo is happy or doesn't come. Unhappy swmbo makes for unhappy camping..

If you do buy new, take your time if possible. We spent 18months researching ours, went to as many camping shows possible and asked lots of questions.  Some great Aussie CT manufacturers and sellers out there but always trust your head and gut feeling as sales people will be sales people.

p.s. I met many great sales people during our search.

Welcome to MySwag Richard. Both Jayco pop tops and soft top CTs have their pros and cons. You need to prioritise what is most important to you to make your decision easier.
Convenience and bling vs practical and Roomy?

Welcome Richard. Completely agree with Scarps. Get out and hire if you can before you buy.

Like you I have three kids and it took us a while to work out what works for a family of 5. In particular how mobile and off road you plan on going.

Good luck and may see you around
