Would you do this or am I crazy? Contemplating GU ute....
« on: September 10, 2015, 02:54:44 PM »
Hi all
The GQ is getting old. So am I. I can replace the GQ but I digress.
Have been looking for quite some time for a suitable replacement for the GQ. My long term plan is to tour Oz by myself long term when I retire in a couple of years and have been looking at a single cab ute and putting a ally pod on the back. I will also be looking for a CT to tow but that is another story.
Being a Datto person since the 70's the GU ute looks the goods. I did look at the dark side for a 79 series single cab but $$$ are ridiculous for late model ones. Earlier V8 models seem to have some oil burning issues as well so have put them off the short list.
My wish list is:
4.2 GU
ST spec
Coil rear end
Low K's
Good condition
Unmolested
All other stuff can be added as I go.

Now I have found one that ticks all the above boxes in a car yard in country NSW and am still to get a final price but it is listed at $41K with 100K on the clock. Photos look like it is in mint condition. Hoping we can come to an agreement on a lower price otherwise deal maybe not on.

AM I CRAZY?

Would you do this?

So yes I am single...
It does look like a reasonable machine, low K's and unmolested but lacking any fruit. The stuff I can use will be coming off the GQ to be put on where I can then put the GQ up for grabs to the local 4by P platers to bust up.
It will be primarily a touring machine so it should not cost too much to add stuff I hope. (laughs and duct tapes up wallet....)
Seriously considering it at the moment. Best one i have seen so far and not too far from here. Have a mechanic mate where it is so will get him to look over it before I head down there.

Hi Noel,

I can't see how you can go wrong, there is a lot of GQ stuff that can carry over to a GU.

Looking for low K's. This one only has 106,000 on it.
Have looked at all those. I will be keeping this for a long time so low K's are one of the big ticket items.

Low klms aren't such an issue if it has a service history... mine has just clocked over 300,000... my GQ had over 300,000 on it too... Woops has 780,000 on it now...

Same as anything, you maybe lucky... Go look at it..

Noel i was in the same predicament a few years back, nearly broke mine and SWMBO's heart to let the GQ go to another home but (touch wood) the GU4.2t is as faithfull a truck as the old GQ,

So far so good,
once you find the right one you wont regret it

You are not crazy. I was in the same place 18 months ago. I ended up with a 12/06 ST, 135,000km for $36,000. grey nomad seller.Consider what you can insure it for and don't pay much more than that. I managed $36,000 agreed value. The last 3 years, 04, 05 and 06 with the electronic injection timing and intercooler are the best. These don't seem to have the overheating issues that the 4.2's are known for and are nicer to drive. The last shipment (late 06) had dual airbags in both ST and DX. I had a 2010 MN Triton Cab chassis and it was a pile of crap like most CRD diesels. Gruesome 3rd world build quality and unrelieblity. I have no regrets getting the GU ute.

My Triton Cab Chassis was doing 12 to 14 l/100. The patrol does pretty much the same. My dad has a ZD30, CRD and it also does exactly the same as mine. So much for modern high tech diesels.  Averages out at around 14l/ 100, but i have done better than that on the highway doing slightly below 100km/h. Mine is fairly stock except the usual 2'' lift.

My 00 td42t 3" exhaust, intercooler and pump tune, 3" lift with 33's does 13ltr/100. Service them and 500k km easy. They cost a bit to service but do it yourself. 10ltrs oil every 5k km and 2 oil filters. They will outlast any modern crd and are simple to work on win win. Grab it now!

I am still working on this Patrol but a Tojo 79 has also reared it's ugly head as a contender.  2007 model with 150,000 on the clock. What is our opinion of the 2007 diesels. Heard they have a drinking problem both oil and fuel.
Any wise people have an opinion?

Drive one and then drive a Patrol. Some people find the Toyota cabin too painfull. Also the V8 is more of a high tech motor so repairs will be more expensive.
