Title: 50th Anniversary of the Lunar Landing
Post by: Memem284 on February 12, 2019, 04:54:13 PM
We are heading over to Carnarvon WA in July to celebrate Carnarvon's involvement into the Lunar Landing in 1969.
My dad worked at the Tracking station at the time and we spent about 5 years all up in Carnarvon. It was the last station to have contact with the space capsules as they left earth's orbit and the last to make contact before splashdown.
I have memories as a young child playing amongst the telescopes and equipment and Dad would bring Thorny Devils home for me to play with. He would collect them from aound the tracking station. Sadly my dad doesn't feel up to the journey - he's 88 and still has all his marbles, but not so great mobility.
At least it's a great excuse to head back to WA (from Newcastle NSW)!
Is there anyone else here that has any involvment with the tracking station? Dad also worked at Woomera at the tracking station there. That was where my one of my sisters and I were born.

The only involvement was l watched it on TV at school . l will never forget our lunch break didn't happen as we sat glued to the B/W TVs  , nobody went outside to play . We watched Mankind kick the Moon  . What a day to have been there .
Thank your Dad for doing what ever it took so as we could watch it happen  .    :cup:

only six years old and remember it clearly, For us it was cold foggy  wet day, us kids got given the day off school for the special occasion, We spent the day at my dads bosses place as they had a TV ..
Softdrinks and patty cakes for us kids,  a few tallies of DA Ale for the adults topped of with a roast dinner and all the trimmings for tea  done on the wood stove  . miss those days   ..

I was at Camp Hill State School and they had the ol B/W TV's set up for everyone.
I'd turned 9 years old, just 2 months earlier.

A few of us got permission and went to Phillip Gordon's house to watch it.
I can't remember why we got the ok to go to Phillips place.
Its not like they had colour tv, that was still 5 or 6 years away.
His Mum set us up with lemonade (probably Tristram's when I really think about it) and some biscuits.

We all sat there, hardly able to believe what we were seeing.

Eight years old, 80-90 kids crammed into an old weatherboard classroom watching a small tv on a stand. Mrs Green was my teacher, Cocko Dent the headmaster gave a talk at assembly about what a great day in history we were witnessing.

Should've bought a Jeep.

They tried one a few years later with Apollo 13, but it didn't work out well! >:D
